(ThyBlackMan.com) Summer is approaching, and many are flocking to gyms all over the country trying to get beach ready. This is the time where shedding the winter fluff becomes the goal, as well as what seem to be the summer sexy ritual. No one d go to the gym to lose weight, or tone their body, with the intention of gaining said weight back. However, simply going to the gym to develop one’s body is never going to be enough. Many dietitians would argue a good exercise program requires a change in eating habits, and activity. This is where fitness plans hit a brick wall for many of us.

The ideal thought, in some cases, is if I spend 30-45min a day 5 days a week in the gym I can eat whatever I want because I’ll burn it off. This is highly unlikely because the average person is horrible at gauging calories than in, verses calories burned. If losing weight is the goal, it’s important to burn more than you are intaking. Understanding your state of health prior to walking in a gym is vital for your body to take full advantage of the workout. Furthermore, let’s be honest…some of us won’t make that 5 day a week regimen.

Life happens, and though in an ideal situation we may have every intention to keep our gym time something has to give if life calls. Exercising on a regular basis is definitely good for your heart, muscles, stamina, energy and mood. With all those assets exercise should offer it can’t be the only movement throughout our day. It may be a shocker but your body craves movement, and it needs more than 30-45min a day. Walking when you can, taking the stairs when its safe verses the elevator and stretching throughout the day will assist you in reaching your summer body goals.

As much as we would love to get around it we must go back to the issue of the kitchen. What you eat, when you eat it, and how much you eat is vital to your goals. It is honestly easier for some to commit to a brutal gym regimen than subdue their eating habits. Food is a source of fuel, but for some it is comfort, habit, and even addiction. We are trained from childhood, by our family, as to how one should eat. So many of us love good soulful savory food…and veggies are ok when they are cooked down and baptized in butter.

That might taste good, but its damaging to your body and it threatens your goals. You can have food that taste good, but doesn’t set you up for “da pressure” later in life. It’s a good idea to talk with a nutritionist and have them assist you in developing healthy eating habits that would complement your activity in the gym, and on a day to day basis. Sometimes it’s as simple as realizing you need to eat more, and can’t skip breakfast every morning while expecting your body to burn effectively. If we are willing to make time for the gym, we must make time for the kitchen to prep food that will help the body.

The approaching of summer finds many of us wanting to better our body…just remember your time in the gym will need assistance from other areas of your life to reach your fitness goals. Furthermore, being healthy is a lifestyle not a season nor diet so make changes that will benefit your life long term. Balancing your food intake and gym regimen will make for a better and happier you all year long.
