(ThyBlackMan.com) Have you got your sights set on a promotion at your place of work? If you know that someone is planning on leaving the company soon and there is a position up for grabs, you are going to need to do everything in your power to make sure that you have a great chance of being the one who gets the opportunity to shine (and a good pay rise too!). So, with being said, let’s take a look at some of the steps you should take to increase your chances of securing a promotion…
- Arrange a meeting with your boss – The first thing you need to do is arrange a meeting with your boss. This does not need to be a formal meeting. However, you do need to ask your boss if you can have five minutes of his or her time. It is a good idea to schedule this in so that you actually get your employer’s full attention. This gives you the opportunity to state your intent, i.e. that you want to be promoted and have more responsibility at the company. Don’t assume that your boss is going to know this is the case.
- Look for ways to invest in yourself – Investing in yourself is a great way to show your enthusiasm and initiative. It shows how dedicated you are to the job and that you are someone who is always going to bring more to the table. You are not satisfied with just staying stagnant. There are so many ways you can go about bettering yourself too. Online courses, like an online MSN program, is something you can do alongside your job, making them a good choice. Plus, the good thing about investing in yourself is that you are still going to experience the benefits of this and enhance your CV regardless of whether you get the promotion or not.
- Make sure you get noticed – Last but not least, make an effort to get noticed. Of course, you should do this in a professional and helpful manner. It is all about putting your ideas forward and showing the value you add to the company. It is not about speaking just for the sake of speaking. Do tasks that are not expected of you and go above and beyond. If you do this, you will make sure you are considered when the decision about filling the vacancy is made. Remember, doing your job is what is expected of you – so you need to go an extra mile and do things that aren’t typically expected and written in your job description.
If you follow the steps that have been presented above, you can give yourself a much greater chance of securing a promotion. Competition is fierce in most work environments today, so it is important that you go the extra mile to try and secure the opportunity that has presented itself.
