(ThyBlackMan.com) “A decade ago, I watched poor and working-class families standing in long lines outside of check-cashing stores, waiting for the privilege of paying to cash their paychecks. I thought there had to be a better way.” – Russell Simmons wrote in an August article for The New York Daily Times

Russell Simmons a.k.a Uncle RUSH did an excellent job confirming the RushCard target audience, the poor and working-class families, who have unfortunately been affected by a massive glitch in the Rushcard banking system which is preventing them from spending or withdrawing their hard earned money.

Do you recall the RushCard subpoenas in 2011 when they and four other prepaid companies were investigated by the Florida Attorney General’s office regarding hidden fees charged on every purchase? At the time it was estimated that the RushCard was in the hands of 50 million people.

Founded in 2003, RushCard now provides two plans for their customers, the RUSH Unlimited Plan which charges $7.95 on the first of each month for customers without direct deposit and $5.95 for those who select their funds be deposited directly. The other option is the Pay As You Go Plan, which charges $1.00 on each purchase, regardless of the amount of purchase, up to $10 per month. RushCard also allows customers to select a debit card design that reflects their personality, the more basic cards start at $3.95 and for a more exclusive, black RushCard, customers pay up to rush-card-russell-simmons-glitch-money-frozen-2015$9.95.

Much of the RushCard success stems from the fact that you are automatically approved once your information is verified. No credit check is required. I’m not exactly sure how the verification process works as my 12 year old daughter received her very own RushCard in the mail earlier this year.

The RushCard website reads, “There are more than 68 million Americans who cannot or choose not to establish a traditional banking relationship. We believe that every American should have access to an affordable place to keep their hard earned money — one that’s safe and convenient. Our goal is to provide people with the financial services and tools that will help them get ahead.”

Unfortunately, RushCard customers now know their funds are not safe or convenient. The downside of prepaid companies such as RushCard is that there are no local bank branches customers can visit to retrieve funds from their account. Many customers have taken to Twitter to discuss the traumas they’re facing like Portia who stated she called RushCard 51 times and was hung up on 34 times. As well as the Decatur woman who was unable to purchase her husband’s heart medication.

Perhaps Russell Simmons will write another article for the New York Daily Times noting that 12 days ago he watched poor and working-class families standing in lines to make pay their rent, utility bills, purchase food for their families and transportation, being denied the privilege to spend their paychecks. I’m thinking to myself, there has to be a better way!
