(ThyBlackMan.com) Today, interracial dating shouldn’t be considered as something that’s “out of the ordinary“, but it’s fair to say that some people are still trying to figure out where they stand when it comes to finding interracial love.

If you’re from one culture and your honey is from another, then it can be easy to feel like your potential dating pool is way too small. Thanks to the emergency of dating websites and apps, it’s now easier than ever to start meeting people online from every walk of life. However, dating can be awkward enough without worrying you’re doing something wrong when bridging ethnicities.

To help keep everyone on the right track, here are some simple do’s and don’ts for interracial dating.

  1. DO Date the Person, not the Race

The color of a person’s skin shouldn’t have much of a part to play when it comes to deciding whether someone is right for you. Race isn’t a fundamental part of getting to know someone else, so there’s no need to dwell on it as a topic. While you can address the fact that you love the color of a person’s skin, it’s important not to make it a big part of your relationship. We’re all much more than the skin we’re born with. Remember to focus on dreams, aspirations, personality, and all the other crucial factors that make a person unique.

  1. DON’T Be Anyone’s Secret

Maybe you’ve been for a couple of months now, but somehow you haven’t met their family or their friends. Maybe they only take you out to places that are inconspicuous, or out of the way of any people they might know. All this behavior should be considered as deeply suspicious. Anyone who’s ashamed of being seen with you – no matter the reason – doesn’t deserve to date you. The last thing you need is to be someone’s dirty little secret.

  1. DO Ignore the “Fetishists”

While it may seem cool at first to be approached by a super-hot person who tells you that it’s always been their fantasy to “be” with someone like you, you don’t really want someone like that in your life. Most of the time, these people are just looking to experiment with their own pre-conceptions about race and color. You deserve a lot more than being someone else’s trial run. You also don’t want to date anyone who’s only with you to make a statement. Remember, you’re looking for a relationship, not a political display.

  1. DON’T Be closed-minded

Though it’s important to make sure that you’re not just dating someone for the color of their skin, or the other way around, it’s also a good idea to stay open-minded. You might not have dated anyone outside of your ethnic background before, but if you see someone that you think is fun, attractive, and interesting, then nothing should stop you from giving it a go! Remember that there are no boundaries on love, and you’re free to pursue romance wherever it appears for you.
