(ThyBlackMan.com) The apostle Paul admonishes us pray for all men, especially those in positions of authority.
As a fundamentalist Christian; one who is a committed follower of Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord, I believe that the Bible is a divinely inspired book of proven principles, ideologies and truths by which we should anchor our society and conduct our lives. I have chosen to live my life by its edicts; and do heed the apostles’ instructions to pray for our leaders; especially our President.
I do this with the understanding that the ideology of those who are in power always translates into public policy, and will undoubtedly effect us all. This sentiment holds true for a President or a parent.
Like many Christians I did struggle back in 2008 whether or not to vote for Obama simply because of the historic; and I have to add the racial component that existed in that presidential race.
For the first time in American history, there was legitimate Black or in his case mixed-ethic presidential candidate unlike the first two (Jackson and Sharpton) who could actually be the President!
He is obviously an extremely gifted, intelligent and a charismatic figure. And by all appearances a loving husband and father to his wife and children, and I have to admit; I really, really wanted to vote for him. But as a Christian and a responsible voter should do; I pushed past my emotions and began to look at his voting record while he was a State Senator in Illinois and as a U.S. Senator in Congress. Although I knew his voting record was that of a committed liberal legislator. I decided because of the historical magnitude of that election, I would give him the benefit of an examination first.
His US Senate record was questionable, but typical for a liberal; his two year span as US Senator was not enough for me to make qualitative decision. But his eight year record as a state senator would be more definitive. And a deeper look into what kind of liberal he really is. His legislative record fell in line with the normal pro-gun control, higher taxes, pro-union etc…liberal/progressive ideology.
But a couple of votes stood out to me in particular.
The first, his co-sponsoring of a bill that would have banned discrimination in housing and employment based on sexual orientation. Not because I’m anti-gay; but because I’m anti-bad laws that violate the expression of religious freedom and conscience in the marketplace and burdens business-owners with useless, expensive and frivolous lawsuits.
Second and most egregious to me was his record on “partial birth abortion bans” and his opposition to a vote on the 2001 and 2002 “born alive” bills. In which Obama’s priority was solely about protecting a woman’s right to abort, even if it meant allowing a baby to die, even if it was birthed alive from a failed abortion procedure!
According to factcheck.org these are words that State Senator Obama said about the proposed bill on the senate floor back in 2001, 2002:
Obama, Senate floor, 2001: Number one, whenever we define a previable fetus as a person that is protected by the equal protection clause or the other elements in the Constitution, what we’re really saying is, in fact, that they are persons that are entitled to the kinds of protections that would be provided to a – a child, a nine-month-old – child that was delivered to term. That determination then, essentially, if it was accepted by a court, would forbid abortions to take place. I mean, it – it would essentially bar abortions, because the equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, and if this is a child, then this would be an antiabortion statute.
And in reference to having a second doctor available (to help save the life of a viable infant outside the womb) after failed abortion procedures, he said:
Obama, Senate floor, 2002: [A]dding a – an additional doctor who then has to be called in an emergency situation to come in and make these assessments is really designed simply to burden the original decision of the woman and the physician to induce labor and perform an abortion. … I think it’s important to understand that this issue ultimately is about abortion and not live births.
UPDATE…Recently audio of this legislative session was found:
[youtube YUkbuhXzbvI]
That was all I needed to make up my mind…. his skin color…. the historical significance of that election…. the power of relativity… the blind black allegiance that many of the professional black left were pushing at the time(and still do today). All of these elements for me became inconsequential.
All of that was trumped by the Judeo-Christian worldview that I had adopted years ago as my moral compass. It became my standard for all things having to do with my life, my family, my Nation and my vote. And not just relegating my views to what I do on Sundays and in my own home or based on some ludicrous “because he is black code”.
I have found no reference in the writings; neither of the Bible nor within our Constitution in which “a judiciary created right to privacy” trumps the right to protect the life of the unborn!
I have not found any reference in the Bible that affirms or condones same-sex marriage. Nor any clause; expressly the 14th amendment of our Constitution which when interpreted correctly, that infers rights or protections based solely on sexual orientations or gender identity.
It gave me a clear picture of the type of ideology that Senator Obama, adhered too. His progressive worldview has a greater influence, and determines his public policy decisions.
Although he has stated he is a Christian. His public policy decisions do not reflect a Judeo-Christian worldview. Additional, a speech he gave at a Sojourners event back in 2006 he declared :
“Moreover, given the increasing diversity of America’s population, the dangers of sectarianism have never been greater. Whatever we once were, we are no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers”.
In 2009 while giving a speech in Turkey he reiterated his belief that Americans don’t consider themselves a Christian Nation! (Not true by the way, based on every poll taken on this issue). Words no sitting U.S. President has ever said to my knowledge and while on foreign soil as well! Again unusual for one who identifies as a Christian.
I wholeheartedly disagree. We are Nation in which Jews, Muslims, Buddhist and Atheist can live freely. But make no mistake about it… We are a Christian Nation!
Therefore, I could not in good conscience vote for him in 2008.
Unfortunately, many people of faith did; and choose to make Senator Obama, the 44th President of the United States.
Obama received higher levels of support from religious groups than Gore did in 2000 and Kerry 2004. The biggest percentage point swing came from Catholics; who by a majority of 54% voted for Obama. Ironic, in light of the most recent controversy between the White House and the Catholic Church.
Since his inauguration he has been true to his promise and vision of bringing liberal/progressive change to America.
Within the first thirty days of his Presidency he rescinded the Mexico City Policy which re-allocates taxpayer funds to provide for international abortions. LifeNews.com lists his complete pro-abortion record in detail since he has been in office.
The President, along with a super-majority in congress for the first two years of his administration, enacted a plethora of unprecedented legislative and policy changes favoring the LGBT community. Included the nomination of Harry Hay admirer, Kevin Jennings as the ”safe schools czar”. Mr. Jennings was the founder of GLSEN, a group that advocates for homosexuality curriculum in public schools. His forward in the book “queering elementary education,”, along with his other writings and speeches were a clear indication of his extremely misguided intentions for the youth of this nation.
And yet, President Obama chose him to help set policy for our public schools!
He directed his DOJ office not to defend DOMA. And enacting a foreign aid plan that included a demand for protections of LGBT’s abroad and offers of asylum and refugee status if they want come to the U.S.
He became the first US President to public endorse same-sex marriage while in office.
He has committed to signing ENDA; proposed legislation that would violate the first amendment and penalizes employers of faith whether they be Jewish, Christian or Muslim. ENDA will force employers with 15 or more employees to allow transgender workers to cross-dress at the workplace and hire openly gay applicants.
He appointed Chai Feldblum one of the four Commissioners of the EEOC. Who has written “that society should “not tolerate” any “private beliefs,” including religious beliefs, that may negatively affect homosexual “equality.” And that “religious liberty — which she also calls “belief liberty”must be placed second to the “identity liberty” of homosexuals. In May of this year the EEOC added “gender identity” to the 1965 Civil Rights Act Title VII statue.
And I could go and on…Not to mentioned most of his economics policies that increase dependence on the State and decrease reliance on GOD.
To be clear, this has nothing to do with the man Barack Obama. It has everything to do with the President Barack Obama his policies, and his desire to promote and enact domestic and foreign policies that are antithetical to the Judeo-Christians principles’ upon which this Nation was founded.
These few issues alone are sufficient reason for the faithful not to make the same mistake in the voting booth in 2012.

Why pro-life individuals can not in good conscience tolerate abortion. When a woman gets pregnant that pregnancy will lead to a human baby. With today’s science we know that the heart begins to beat at 7 weeks, by 10 weeks the baby look exactly like a human baby. It is a baby, not a fetus, not tissue. The baby is not part of the mother’s body, it is a totally separate life force from the mother. What the mother’s body does is house and feed the baby. This is just what a mother and father do when they bring a newborn baby home from the hospital. It is illegal to kill a newborn baby brought home from the hospital even if this is done through ignorance or neglect. As pro-file people (Christian or not) we believe that every baby is a living human being, a totally separate entity from the mother. When we are asked at what point in development is it okay to kill the little defenseless human being our answer is actually a non-answer. How can we answer that. I guess I would say how can it ever be okay to kill this little defenseless human being.” Most Americans agree that killing this little human being by partial birth abortion (because of the late date of the abortion the baby is partially born and then killed) is abhorrent. Most people agree that anything after viability (the point at which the baby could live outside the mother) is wrong which is usually considered 20 weeks. However, what this pastor is trying to tell you is that President Obama supports abortion at any point in the pregnancy even the abortion I mentioned above. His support goes beyond that very troubling stance. He supports and voted for 3 times to not even provide basic life saving measures to baby’s born alive during failed abortions. Which does happen more than you might imagine. This in unconscionable for most people but especially for followers of Christ like the pastor. What he was trying to say is if you call yourself a Christian how can you support a pro-death policy such as this. Abortion is a frightening and sickening way to deal with an unplanned pregnancy. It can leave lifelong physical and mental scars on many young girls and women. Many women continue to morn the babies they have aborted. Statics tell us that many young girls and women who have had abortions end up getting pregnant again quickly because of the whole that abortions leaves in the heart of its victims. Please give this topic some consideration away from political talking points. Thank you for your attention.
Remember Christians are not perfect and Obama can not be held to be perfect. Abortion is wrong and Obama has taken the wrong road with this one. But the other option is a Mormon who is also not perfect and is taking the wrong road with helping those in needs aka NOT THE RICH! Remeber we have free will, even if abortion is made legal its the individual who CHOOSES that act that has to repent and face judgement with the one and only judge GOD. We are all sinners who have made and make mistakes. Obama knows in his heart its wrong but got caught up in the must win by all cost…maybe for the greater good??….Remember the Lord has already spoken -Its time for a change- dont be clouded there are many sins in the bible being played out in politics…too many stones being thrown at the wrong one…you have to pick your poison…pray on it and ask for clarity…
The POTUS is consistently dividing us along the lines of race and class not to mention he is supposed to be mining the store but is totally clueless about America’s business. NO amount of practice or use of a teleprompter is going to help our inept POTUS.
This article is way out there. The author says he’s a Christian : ” one who is a committed follower of Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord, I believe that the Bible is a divinely inspired book of proven principles, ideologies and truths by which we should anchor our society and conduct our lives.” That sounds really good as I’m one that truly loves my lord and savior Jesus Christ and his principles…..however no wear in my beliefs or faith is it even thought that this world’s principles are founded on the Lord’s. Christians can’t have it both ways…….
this government is not the government of the Kingdom of God and never will be…hence the need for the lord to destroy or rather purify both heaven and earth that a new heaven and earth come forth….New Jerusalem shall come down from heaven that the lord will dwell among the saints…for he shall be their God and they shall be his people. Not now….you see the bible that you read says that we (true Christians) are pilgrims and strangers in the land….this is not our official home….if you really want to be technical true Christian don’t take part in government affairs…from the bibles stand point….but since most do vote shouldn’t our stance be one of choice ?
That every individual that lives here should be protected by it’s nations constitution ? Tax paying citizens irrespective of their race , color , creed…etc… they all deserve to be protected by the same laws….hence their citizenship…..FOR THE RECORD THIS GOVERNMENT OR OUR NATION SHOULD NOT BE RULED BY ONE SET OF CITIZENS PRINCIPLES…NOT MINE OR YOURS BUT WE THE PEOPLE…OF THIS NATION….CHRISTIANS THIS IS NOT OUR OFFICIAL HOME TO GOVERN….WE NEED TO GOVERN OUR HOME BASED ON OUR FAITH BUT NOT OUR NEIGHBORS…there are many things I don’t agree with however we must consider those that are constant such as the POTUS…Romney is not constant…he on both sides of your argument…..
you just don’t know what you’re getting that’s the problem with him…remember HE WAS FOR IT BEFORE HE WAS AGAINST IT…even LGBT…so we just don’t know what he really stands for..
No Vote Obama = 1 Vote Romney. But yes, BHO Christian Values are non-existent in any meaningful policy way.
And no, using Gov.t Force to tax and redistribe is not Christian. Jesus did not want Government to do what individuals should do to help the poor. Remember give to Cesar what is Cesar’s and God what is God’s.
It is so said to sit here and read how many of you people that Obama has brainwashed. This man is ruining this country. The debt he is leaving for the men to try to fix that come after him is ridiculous. And the support of gay marriage, you just cannot consider yourself a true Christian if you support that. I have no problem with homosexuality, that is your choice. But I will never support the marriage. Call it anything else. I hope someone takes him out before he has a chance to ruin this country any more. While that too is not very Christian, something needs to be done to stop this man that the zombies in this country are turning into their own god.
Obama is against the bible? No not really yes his platform is pro choice..pro marriage of same sex but….In sticking with the bible, God has given ALL of us choices. Obama promoting these platforms does not necessarily mean that he agrees with them as did Mitt Romney who did agree with Pro Choice and then changed his platform to garner the votes. Even if Obama were re elected, God will give people the choice to either choose abortion or get married to one of the same sex…however there is a consequence to either from GOD and God alone. Not from man. These people who do this choosing would have to answer to God on judgement day not us. So that is only two issues I hear Christians say they will not vote for Obama. Now for Romney….He is against the entire bible in his thinking. Matthew 6:19-21 ESV “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” He has more money than any of us will ever see and hides it in Swiss Banks and Cayman Islands and doesn’t show his taxes. He isn’t thinking of treasures in heaven accept possibly becoming a God himself if elected according to his church.
James 3:14
14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. He isn’t FOR the people he is FOR himself.
(Lev 19:4) Do not go after false gods, and do not make metal images of gods for yourselves: I am the Lord your God.Romney believes he will become God with good deeds according to his church.
(1John 5:21) My little children, keep yourselves from false gods. Romney believes that God originated as a Man..does not believe The Father, The Son and Holy Spirit. The Trinity where all three are one.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6) For those that do not believe and accept this they are eternally separated from God in hell.
Romney believes There is more, before the three degrees of glory and after earth life. After you die, your spirit goes to the Spirit World. The Spirit World is divided, sort of, into Spirit Prison and Spirit Paradise. Those in Paradise are \’Mormons\’ who have lived good lives and done all that they should have. Those in Prison are those who, for whatever reason, have not accepted the gospel. Either they didn\’t get the opportunity to in their mortal lives, or something. Those in Paradise do missionary work among thier fellow spirits, teaching the gospel. Here on earth, we do temple baptisms for these dead spirits, and they choose whether to accept it or not.
Although Mormons are usually friendly, loving, and kind people, they are deceived by a false religion that distorts the nature of God, the Person of Jesus Christ, and the means of salvation. So how is Romney following the guidelines of the bible? The Mormons believe they are the only ones that will get to the highest plane of Heaven. They baptize the dead without their knowledge as Romney did his father in law who was an Atheist. So tell me now Romney is more of a bet than Obama. I think I will stick to Obama whether I agree with his abortion and same sex marriage platform because those are choices we can all make under God’s word ourselves. We do not need government telling us…God has spoken!
Obamacare – Obamanation – Obamahood: Mitt Romney the devout Mormon, may have lowered his standards to win this Presidental election. For decades The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) – The Mormons and its faithful church members have taken a strong, and very vocal unalterable stance against gambling in any form including lotteries, sweepstakes, racetracks, and casinos. Sheldon Adelson (CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation and Venetian Macao Ltd.) son of a Ukranian Jewish immigrant (also financier of Romney’s recent visit to Isreal), and his wife recently gave $10 million to the pro-Romney super PAC named Restore Our Future. Adelson the Las Vegas casino magnate has pledged to spend $100 million to defeat Obama. Adelson’s very large contributions can easily make Romney a shoe in for the President of the United States. It will probably be after Romney officially wins the GOP nomination at the National Republican Convention in Tampa, Florida in August 2012 that the American public can expect this Super PAC money to be spent in massive negative campaign ads against Obama.
Im so tired of people saying they oppose something based on the bible or christianity. It makes us look gullible. I am a christian but I believe in a concept of treating people right and that there is ultimately a greater power. I don’t prescribe to everything in the bible as it has been shaped by man across time. Now here is why I oppose gay marriage. It erodes the foundation of our society, the family unit. Homosexuality has been around forever but lets not fool ourselves into believing it is normal behavior, if it were right they could procreate together without donors, adoption, or surrogates. Here is why I oppose partial birth abortions. It is wrong to birth a child and then purposely destroy that child to convenience an individual who could have practiced better birth control. If it is a product of rape and the baby is partially alive, what’s wrong with adoption. Nothing to do with the bible, just things that are wrong, wrong.
MsYBBG, who made the first comment, has summarized my comment perfectly:
“So who do you vote for? People who legislate wars on impoverished nations? Or people who vote to put young ones who are alive and well to death? People who legislate to imprison instead of heal? Do we vote for legislators who abuse children and commit adultery? Do we vote for those who legislate guns into the hands of mass murderers who had committed no prior crimes, but are mentally ill?”

Excerpt:On August 1, 2012 many more health care services became available to women without co-pays, deductibles, or out-of-pocket expenses. While this can be seen as a victory for women’s health, there are many services that affect men in equal or similar ways that still require men to be able to afford those cost-sharing requirements. Why should all women receive these services (such as well-care visits) “free” while men still will be denied those services if they can not afford to pay for them? The Affordable Care Act will undoubtedly expand the gender life-expectancy gap even further due to men being denied these well-care visits. Black and Hispanic males will be hit hardest as studies have shown them to be less likely to afford those out-of-pocket expenses.
These are our fathers, our brothers and our sons that perhaps will be forced to go without those well-care visits to determine important screenings and services. It’s great to have our mothers, sisters and daughters to not have to be concerned with financial obligations to receive those services. This act should not force some men to be denied those preventive care services just because of financial inability. It’s time to rectify the imbalance and make this bill adhere to gender equality.

I don’t know what it is about Christians that are black who are voting for the President, I agree with much of what the writer has expressed, the president’s policies are extremely liberal & against biblical instructions. I didn’t vote for him the first time & I certainly won’t be voting for him this time around either. His policies are failed, he wasn’t experienced enough for the job, & his mindset has been shaped by some of the most liberal minds in America.
As a Christian pastor, husband, father, & citizen of this great country I cannot in good conscious vote for a man who’s polices have sent this nation further down the wrong path. And yes I am voting for Mitt Romney because he has CEO experience,& governing experience that this country really needs right now!
Wow our culture and society reminds me of what happened to ancient Israel. They say history is destined to repeat itself and hear it is in America (U.S.) I suggest the movie “ISAIAH 9: 10 JUDGMENT”
I am not voting for Obama or Romney this election. But, I will be voting against anything that is Anti-GOD this coming election (i.e. gay marriage and abortion). Additionally, a lot of people support abortion without knowing its direct implications. Abortion is a contributing factor to the mass genocide of African Americans, but, they don’t see it because their still in shackles. Maybe, people will one day research abortion and the political ideologies that support it and actually figure out why. Modern day Tuskegee for the masses.
1 Corinthians 2:13
If all it takes is the one point to lose your vote, then I guess you’re not voting for either side. Thing is, I agree with you theologically; however, I’m not willing to throw away the sinner because of the sin, nor am I willing to throw away an option based on a single point of disagreement. Perfect alignment with your moral compass is going to be tough–even Jesus didn’t get it from everyone. He did, however, give people a chance to come around to truth and, even if they didn’t, He allowed them mercy enough to grow.
@ Nicolas
You took the words right out of my mouth. This writer is very verbose with extreme narrow views of reality and politics. His homophobia over-rides his argument and gives gays even more reason to vote for President Obama. Anyone with any intelligence know that the President needs the gay vote to win. The writer comes on Bible thumping as though this justifies him in the dirty business of politics. In his long winded barrage, where does he mention separation of church and state? If he held up any politician or person to the scrutiny he holds the President, then whom could he vote for? Most assuredly not Mitt Romney.
Resume
I voted for Jesus already. Politics is a never ending battle of opinion, ego, power, and foolishness. No one will ever be satisfied….
This read like a PRO Obama ad to me! All of the things you mentioned sound like great reasons to vote for Obama – seeing as how I’m a Black female homosexual.
Come out of the 19th century. When you do, let’s have an intelligent conversation. One that shows the love your God would want you to show towards your fellow man.
Oh and not to mention the hypocrisy about gays in the choir —- best gospel music from Gay folk!
I agree with Ulo about how black folks Cling to religion, especially christanity and islam. They both have been use to enslave us (look at Arab slavery of black folk in Mauritania) Yet we defend them like — well they don’t represent the true believers—- Yes they Do! And look how mega church preachers Pimp their congregation, yet we defend this silliness. This is why it’ll take another 200 years for black folks to get out of this stupidity and clinging to Massa’s religion.
It is backwards ignorant thinking like this that keeps individuals in their place. Let me know when you are ready to go back to the days of slavery…it is acceptable in the bible. Let me know when you decided women are to be treated as chattel…it is acceptable in the bible. I know you must be in favor of “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”…after all that is a “principle in the bible…And rape must be okay because if it occurs in the country because there is no one to hear the individual being assaulted cry out…Also if I follow your rational of precept upon precept it is okay for me to kill any man that disrespects me and take his wife as my own…that is in the bible. And it is okay for me to form my on army and wage war against my neighbor in the name of the almighty…that is in the bible…It would be nice if individuals would actually study and show themselves approved before the regurgitate the ignorant thoughts of others.
Very well written article. Ironically none of the commentors actually argued against what was written.
I wonder why?
When it’s voting time and we go to polls to cast our votes, realisticly we will have two choices, Obama/Biden or Romny/Ryan. For this writer to narrow his choices down to which candidates makes public polcy according to Judeo-Christian worldview, is a narrow minded if not disingenuous approach to selecting the next leader of the freeworld.
Great Article. It’s unbelievable how a man could subject his minor children to racially divisive sermons and be considered a loving father. Adding insult to injury, this same man used the poor as a stepping stone to power with the blessings of MSM and the elites of both parties.
DON’T vote for neither political party vote for an independent republicans and democrats are cut from the same cloth which would explain why Obama is furthering the bush new world order doctrine, staging shootings, taking away human rights, killing innocent ppl across the world in our name, leading us straight to the pits of hell. Use your common sense don’t vote for neither they are nothing but puppets to cooperation’s/the federal reserve. Put your trust in god stay strapped up at all times and keep a watchful eye on the police point blank.
Mr. Thornton, If this article was written on paper it would only have value if there were ever a shortage of toilet paper.
Boy christanity has done a job on us black folk. We stil believe that slave master’s version and will defend it More than the white man. Joe Biden is right – christian tea party Would put us back in chains and so called black christians would lead the way in submissiveness. I love ya ThyBlackman but can’ t agree with you on this religious nonsense.
I would like to know if you suggest we vote for Governor Romney instead, Mr. Thornton. It would seem to be that it would also be a choice fraught with problems if the standard by which we are judge candidates is fidelity to Christian beliefs.
So who do you vote for? People who legislate wars on impoverished nations? Or people who vote to put young ones who are alive and well to death? People who legislate to imprison instead of heal? Do we vote for legislators who abuse children and commit adultery? Do we vote for those who legislate guns into the hands of mass murderers who had committed no prior crimes, but are mentally ill?
