Worse still, you can be thought of as someone who isn’t a team player. All these phrases have one thing in common. They don’t really mean anything at all. Let’s say your boss sets up a ‘fun’ activity every time an employer achieves a goal. Allowing you to take a shot at an inside goal each time you win a new client. You may not want to engage in this activity and would rather continue with your work. At this point, your boss may claim you’re not a team player. There are certain things a boss should not ask or make you feel forced to do. Engaging in activities that are nothing to do with your work is one of them. Here are a few of the most serious examples.

Dating

Most businesses in America have a strict no office dating rule. Some of them don’t, and it all depends on the recommendations of the HR team. However, one thing that most people are adamant about is WOMEN-BUSINESS-2016-Blackthat employers should not date employees. This could be a very dangerous situation. The employee might feel obligated to go on a date. They might even think their job could be a danger if they don’t. This is where that idea of not being a team player is raised again. It’s just a couple of drinks, where’s the harm? Unfortunately, this type of situation can easily lead to a case of harassment. If your boss ever asks you on a date or propositions you, politely remind them you’re an employee.

Cover Ups

Usually, if you work for business, you will sign some form of a disclosure contract. You will agree not to share the secrets of the business, strategies or research. In some cases, the contract will stipulate any work you create at the company belongs to the business. However, this contract can not stop you from reporting on your company for breaking the law. For instance, if they have been using unfair trading practices you can report them. Whistleblowing is a controversial topic and the most high profile case is Edward Snowden. We all saw how well things turned out for him. However, if you do see something illegal you should get in touch with a whistleblower protection agency. They can help make sure you don’t end up in legal troubles yourself for filing the report.

Unpaid

There are situations where you might be asked to work without being paid. That phrase ‘going the extra mile’ might be mentioned in this situation. However, technically an employer should never ask you to do this. You can offer, but there should be no obligation. Time is money and your position in the company should never be the exception. If you are providing a service, don’t let your business get away with giving you no compensation.
