The President’s Budget Comes Up Short!

(ThyBlackMan.com) Expanding the national deficit in the manner our President proposes will not create long term jobs and a national recovery! How much more can Blacks take without some cracks showing up in their support? There is no question about it, Black workers of America, we will complete our fourth straight year mired in double-digit unemployment under this President, who rarely parts his lips to say thank you. We are it appears,  Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man,” when it comes to this Administration. Obama’s proposed budget seeks $476 billion dollars in new spending for the Department of Transportation. Fifty billion dollars of that would go in part toward hiring workers to rebuild roads and other transportation infrastructure.

This is simply an expansion of the federal payroll. How will deficit spending in this manner create long term jobs? However, this budget proposal does empower organizations like the NAACP, the Urban League, Operation Push and Al Sharpton’s organization, the National Action Network, who use federal block grants to support their operations and line their pockets with federal dollars. I would have to assume, to access any of this money, if it were made available; you would have to go through the process of applying for it through block grants. What is missing in the President’s budget is a clear path to a long term jobs creation plan. Look, this budget represents a reversion to the past. The people who benefit from this budget are the very folks who have been curiously silent during these last three years as the Black middle class lost 14% of its income and the greatest number of jobs since the Great Depression. And now those same folk are going to be rewarded with access to billions of dollars of block grants. After all somebody has to be responsible for doling out the money to us poor brothers and sisters as we recover and who better than the same Black leaders who were silent as we descended into the abyss of double-digit unemployment.

You do realize they take their cut of these federal dollars off the top and then redistribute what is left through various educational, training and poverty programs to us. Once the federal government withdraws from spending in this manner, the jobs go away and we are right back where we started. To create long term jobs you have to engage the consumer! The consumer represents 70% of the spending in this economy. This President is running away from his responsibility to the nation to present a doable jobs creation plan. One such plan can be found if you google Davis Deficit Neutral Stimulus Plan. This is just one plan that will get our nation back on its feet and reduce the double-digit unemployment numbers in the Black community, which are destroying our middle class.

This is something within his power to do now as President if he so desired! If the President does not like that plan, he should come up with one of his own. Nevertheless, there are plans out there. But I tell you, this President’s re-election strategy does not involve putting Black people and this nation back to work! We are simply left to rely upon the trickle down economics we have all come to despise. The Federal Reserve and the Congressional Budget Office are estimating the process of trickling down this time, before we reach what is normal for us concerning full employment, will take approximately five years.

You may think from reading this analysis of his budget, that I am anti-Obama. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am simply a fierce advocate and proponent of the need of a clear and unambiguous plan that will create jobs. If you are an Obama supporter, you too should be requesting he come up with a clear plan of jobs creation. Economist are predicting the current unemployment rate which fell last month will in the near future begin to head upward again. Thus, the goodwill being bestowed on Mr. Obama will fade with each upward tick of the unemployment rate.

The world we live in is not all that complicated. Just as there is an entire industrial complex of largely White dominated corporations who make money off war, through the seemingly endless construction of war apparatus, there is also an entire industry of mainly Black corporations who make money off of poverty. There is no doubt who is getting the most federal money. That would be the military and American industrial complex dedicated to the manufacture of war apparatus as they received $525.4 billion dollars in this budget. I am sure these competing interests for our tax dollars will be around long after you and I have gone home to our maker.

In all honesty, we must not be misled into thinking such programs are job creation plans. The Federal Government, if it desired cannot put this entire country to work through infrastructure, defense, and block grant spending programs. Ultimately it has to rely on the private sector to do this. It is in this area where we need our President to lead. We call upon him to come to the table with a long term job creation plan not because we have supported him the least , but because we as a people supported him the most. We call upon him to come to the table with a long term job creation plan, not because we have suffered the least in this down term, but because we have suffered the most. Finally, we ask because he is our President, and it is well within his power to do what we request, if he were so inclined.
