(ThyBlackMan.com) Nation – A people who share the same lies about their past, hatred of their present neighbor, and illusions about the future.
Ernest Renan
This is one of the most cynical, yet truthful, definitions of the word nation I’ve ever read. Ernest Renan was a French philosopher and scholar who lived in the 19th century. He studied and wrote about language, religion, and nationalism. Reading Renan’s work on nationalism over and against W.E.B. Du Bois text The Souls of Black Folk opened my eyes to the fact that nationalism is more than belonging to a preferred race or class. Belief is a constitutive part of national identity.
Believing the socially accepted myth about a nation, despite the historical accounts of the past and the lived experiences of the present, is a form of religion for some people. The myth that America is a Christian nation is so embedded in the psyche of the average citizen that questioning the veracity of this claim is akin to blasphemy. This myth is insidious because it negates the violence America was built on. If Manifest Destiny was ordained by God, then we can accept the suffering of those crushed in its path. If America is a Christian nation, she’s already been forgiven for her transgressions.
When the story of America was passed down to previous generations it was given to them through favorable biographies, autobiographies, and American folklore. Most of the early histories about America were written from the vantage point of the politicians, entrepreneurs, and military leaders who shaped the country. History told from this perspective doesn’t reflect the average person’s lived experience. I’m not suggesting we dismiss those texts writ large, but we have to acknowledge the fact that the overwhelming majority of Americans never experienced the utopian Christian centered existence this myth evokes. Books like Uncle Tom’s Cabin, The Adventures of Huck Finn, and texts written by Du Bois, Ralph Ellison, and Richard Wright serve as checks and balances on the narrative that America turned her back on God.
There are Americans who will never be able to accept honest assessments about where our nation is today, or where we may be tomorrow, as long as they are emotionally invested in lies about the past. Every generation has justified their unjust behavior towards those the Bible commands them to love through a complex bait and switch in which the racial, ethnic, or religious “otherness” of their neighbor transforms them into beings unworthy and undeserving of love.
The book of Habakkuk is one of the least preached out of books in the Bible. Fire and brimstone pastors can find six degrees of separation (or less) between our times and a litany of Old Testament prophesies, but you aren’t likely to hear a sermon preached from Habakkuk 2:12–13 which reads as follows:
12 Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity! 13 Behold, is it not of the Lord of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity? (KJV)
Hermeneutical interpretations aside, scriptures that call into question the moral (or immoral) origins of our nation are, as a rule, ignored by those who support nationalism over kingdom building. The fact that so many churches openly supported a politician who advocated for a kind of nationalism synonymous with xenophobia is indicative of this. If my reading of the gospels is correct, no nation can call itself righteous if they don’t care for the people Jesus taught his followers to care for. The neighbor isn’t the sick, indigent, orphan, or widow. The neighbor Jesus taught about in the parable of the Good Samaritan is the person who is most unlike you.
In order to believe America was founded on Christian principles one has to negate the way the land was acquired, and ignore the way she treated her neighbors. Some of the most suffering in our country is being felt by those living in what has historically been described as God’s country. The Bible Belt is awash with unemployment and underemployment, Meth and Opioids, desperation and despair. The same Christians who willingly accept the premise that issues like abortion and gay marriage caused God to remove his protection from America reject the notion that some of our current social ills could be connected to the sins of stealing this land and slavery.
Either Renan was more right than wrong in his definition of a nation, or I’ve grown to cynical to be optimistic. When I turn on the television and see Evangelicals supporting the dismantling of the healthcare system, calling for walls to be built, or ignoring the suffering of their fellow man I know their words are grounded in nationalism and not love. The distance many young people (theologians and pastors included) place between themselves and the political class of Evangelicals is rooted in the exclusionary way Christianity continues to be practiced by those in power. Instead of creating the beloved community Dr. King preached about too many prominent evangelicals use the gospels to further segment society. This form of Christian malpractice is symptomatic of a nation that avoids honest discussions about the past, confuses critiques about the present with antipatriotic sentiments, and is in denial about the future.

It is past time for homo sapiens to found their religious beliefs upon “empirical scientific facts” not “present day faith.” Present day faith is not provable by the five senses, nor consistent with the ” laws of nature when utilizing the limitations of the five senses thus cannot lay claim to the use of the scientific word ” fact.” nor confirm all that is written in various religious documents. Most, if not all religious metaphysical belief today are based on ” faith “not ” facts.”Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.” Postulates founded upon empirical scientific facts are provable time and time again ( i.e. the irrefutable aspect of empirical scientific research commonly referred to as scientific law ), religious metaphysics are not so easily provable resulting in disagreements, and conflicts. It is time to move on.
Not bad at all Danny. I enjoyed reading this article. At best, America was founded on pieces of the Levitical law mixed with murder, lies, invasion, slavery and deception. And the oppressors did not build this country, they just took the land and made somebody else build the country then took credit for it.
I found the verses you quoted as good selections to reference. And I don’t even want to get started on the Declaration of Their Independence. Read my article on this blog entitled SCREW THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE. I think you will find it interesting.
At the very least, your article challenges the lies and makes people think. Thank you for that
When Earnest Renan formulated that definition, he was living in the nineteen century. Then, America was a nation under-seized. Slavery was not abolished until 1865, yet there were Christians crusading for the abolition of slavery even before the institution ended. Still, taken into consideration, the illiteracy problem among ex-slaves, there were Christians among the ruling elite as well as the serfs, though today we would refer to them as hypocritical because of the inhuman condition of the Institution of slavery. Therefore, America was founded on Christian principles, one reading of the U. S. Constitution will bear that out.
Please, could you name the Renam’s book against Du Bois and The souls of the black folks?
Thank you

LOL
“Believing the socially accepted myth about a nation, despite the historical accounts of the past and the lived experiences of the present, is a form of religion for some people. ”
For someone who studies manipulation, this is just an easy target. Now I am certain that the fingers of many shall harden at this point but, let me ask a honest question. If I claim to have studied life should I have an understanding of manipulation? I am also not good nor evil. I am just me. But, back to my point, depending on the grade of the manipulator and what skills they do have, they would probably choose to attack either their clouded judgment or their faith in God. Because that person has built a persona and idea behind their own lies, in order to keep that, new lies must be made and harden the core. Once the manipulator can see the core, getting them to “do” becomes moving things around in order to keep them to protect their core. The higher grades will attack their connection with God. If they are willing to make bold lies, how much about God do they really know? Do they even really believe or is that just something they say to have the world view them as if they have some high standard that is unreachable without divine intervention. Do they fear God to make such bold lies? Are they of God to push bold lies? Does God love their hands? What is inside of their hearts? Is the great I am, the father of lies? I have no desire to teach how we use this knowledge but, just these simple questions can divide the flock.
The story of America is dependent on whom you talk to and what they actually do know. That is a complicated history that is filled with things that are considered right and things that are not. Almost all nations with a population of a decent amount have bad history filled with the heart of man. The pride that you see from some people isn’t necessarily built on the pride of history, more the idea of what it is strives towards. Is it wrong? What marriage have you found that sees or has a great idea of what marriage is and yet is not there today. They could even be very far off, almost to a point of black and white, yet they believe and strive to reach the other side. Do Christians not also do the same? You find me a man, woman or child whom believes they are perfect and I will find you a liar within that same moment.
Habakkuk 2:12–13 which reads as follows:12 Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity! 13 Behold, is it not of the Lord of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity? (KJV)
Tis true, we are very well aware of this but, it is more complicated than just this scripture. In the bible it also points to the fact that if land is taken by force, they will lose it at some point. When that happens is debatable. Rome had large portions of the world under it’s control for a very long time, yet not anymore. The real question at this point is whom does God recognize as the owners of that land. I can’t say for certain and with all of the lies that happen now, who really does know outside of God. Can I trust the man that will show me his own vision?
America is not a Christian nation. You can read the constitution and figure that out. It is against the constitution to choose any one religion over another. The fact that the constitution says this and then on the money it says in God we trust, I can’t answer that. Is it the Christian God? I haven’t seen a scripture in the constitution that states that.
Was America founded on Christian principles? Somewhat, it was founded on many concepts that came from all over. Some the Native People, some religion I assume, some Europe. Studying that moment will point to this information. It may also depend on where in America you were born. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was intentionally hidden but, areas where those things happen know more than the rest. That is common in life.
What is a nation to me? An agreement and understanding amongst a large group of people. Loose definition but, I will stay at least close to this because of all of the variables that come up. Are these social media platforms not a nation? Honesty
Christianity beats second choice.
ok….. and just what would be your notion of “second choice”? Atheism? Agnosticism? Islam? Judaeism? Bhuddism? Wicca? That said, i fail to see how your comment connects to the article, which simply puts forth the case for the USA not being a “Christian nation”, in part because many people who CALL themselves “Christians” in the country, have no clue as to what Jesus’s teachings are, nor do they actually care: many folks use the veneer of “Christianity” to hide their hate, primitive forms of tribalism and xenophobia. Recall that the KKK also pretended to be Christian, while completely ignoring nearly all of Christ’s teachings.
