(ThyBlackMan.com) In light of the racist comments directed at four minority women in congress, on Twitter, there have been many people that have come out in rebuke of the words. Some of the comments to this racist behavior seem to be shock. It is hard to understand how anyone can be shocked by the language that comes out of this administration. Unfortunately, it has been a morally bankrupt administration from the campaign to the white house. Maybe it is time we stop with the surprised reactions and begin to deal in truth about what’s happening in the country. Granted it means admitting we live in a very ugly society and getting defensive by stating “it’s not me” is not going to help the situation, nor does it change the facts.
There is a demographic in this country that is willing to rebuke this administration, but they believe the atrocities we are seeing is not America. They believe this behavior we are seeing is single handedly the fault of the current administration. If we get them out of office, we’d be on our way back to the America we know…the one with dignity. We’d be on our way back to an America that doesn’t put people in concentration camps with inhumane conditions, or subject children to said conditions while ripping them from their parents. If we can just survive this administration everything will go back to normal is what they truly think.
Many comments on twitter in response to 45 was “This is not America”. The problem is this is very much so America and has been America for as long as the country has stood. To say “this is not America” is to dismiss the history of this country that is steeped in the inhumane treatment of minorities. To disregard the history means the country still picking and choosing whose humanity they will acknowledge; they are still deciding whose cause for human rights they will champion. The problem is we should be outraged by any act of inhumane treatment that takes place in this country, but that’s not going to happen. The atrocities we are seeing will be written in history. Will we tell future generations to forget them, or learn from them?
This is an issue because this same America tends to tell black people in this country, we need to forget the past and move forward. We spend to much time dealing with the past of slavery, what happened to us in reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, and even the brutality we are currently living with. If we thoroughly address that past, and truly sought to understand it, maybe we can stop repeating aspects of said history. This can be said for the history of many people of color in this country.
We need to stand as a country and speak the truth that some of us know…this is America, and it needs to change. This country can’t find its moral compass because it never had one. It’s time we stop pretending America isn’t the country built on blood. The plight of Native was inhumane, the enslavement of Blacks was inhumane, the treatment of many groups of immigrants was inhumane, and that treatment continues. The treatment of the body of minorities in this country is inhumane; many are beaten, killed and legislated. This is the America you live in. While police are killing black and brown people in the streets and getting away with it some liberal white Americans fix their mouth to discuss compliance when its proven that does not work. In this America presidential candidates can violate women and break the law…but still get elected. No, this didn’t start with the current administration…who elected these people is the question of the day.
Now, if you don’t like this America lets start the road to redemption by admitting the to the truth of this country and working towards atonement as a nation. There is always hope that we can become a better country, but we can’t do that while continuing to lie to self. This is America. What you see on television is America. The hatred and racism is America. Sexism is America. The disenfranchisement of the poor is America. The greed and corruption in the 1% is America. When do you plan to fight for a completely new America…one whereby these things are not tolerated regardless of race and class?
