(ThyBlackMan.com) A good night’s sleep is what you and your family crave.  After all, you (and your family) feel refreshed after having slept for at least eight hours.  But new research indicates that it’s the quality and not the quantity of sleep you (and your family) get which determines how rested you are when you wake up.  You (and your family) need to ensure that most of your sleep is in the rapid eye movement (REM) stage in order to feel rested upon waking because this is the deepest phase of sleep your brain can enter into.

How do you know if you are getting enough REM sleep?

Now that you know that you need lots of REM sleep to feel refreshed how do you know if you are getting enough of this kind of sleep at night?  The answer is you use REM sleep calculator facts to determine this.  Part of understanding how to calculate the amount of REM sleep you (and your family) get each night is to calculate the time you have to wake up and subtract eight hours from that.  You can use this website to help you determine this.  You should also know that people in different age groups need different amounts of sleep each night (or day).  For example, young adults need between 7-9 hours of sleep a night, while newborns need 14-17 hours of sleep every day and night.

Making sure your baby gets enough sleep at night

If you are a parent, you know that a little baby needs to get enough sleep during the day and at night.  If the baby doesn’t get this amount of sleep, he or she will be very cranky for the whole day upon waking.  The number of hours of REM sleep the baby gets is very important, but even more important is the quality of sleep he or she gets.  This is largely determined by the mattress he or she sleeps on.  You want to use a small mattress for baby when you put your baby to sleep.  Babies are small and having them sleep on large mattresses can be uncomfortable or even dangerous for them (they can easily roll off of the mattress).

What bed size does your baby need

You need to know the appropriate bed sizes for babies in order to know which type of small mattress you should be buying for your baby.  If you have a newborn who sleeps in a crib, you want to have a firm mattress which snugly fits the size of the crib to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).  The mattress dimensions in this instance should be 27 inches long by 52 inches wide.  This size will easily fit any crib snugly and will be large and wide enough to ensure that your baby sleeps comfortably through the night.  This is important since well-rested babies are happy and delightful babies who are not cranky for the rest of the day!

Now that you know

Now that you know that the type of mattress and amount of quality sleep you (and your family) get at night largely determines how rested you are in the morning, you need to be calculating your REM sleep and ensuring that you (and your family) are sleeping on the right mattress.  Not doing so could make you, your family, and baby very cranky and less functional and productive throughout the day.  No one wants that!
