(ThyBlackMan.com) I personally admit as a long time fan of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Super has had it’s fare share of highs and lows.
And Dragon Ball Super has been very controversial especially as of lately in the eyes of a lot of Dragon Ball fans like myself and I personally understand why they are legitimately angry at a lot of things they didn’t like.
Here are the Top 5 retcons and asspulls from Dragon Ball Super that I personally disagreed with.
1. Caulifla & Kale – I will admit for the record that while I am a fan of the two pure blooded female saiyans, but what I (including most of the fandom) don’t personally agree with the most however is how they’ve been given so much in such a short amount of time because I personally feel that they were rushed upon first introduced. And I as a longtime fan of Dragon Ball, I can understand why a lot of Dragon Ball fans including some fellow urban nerds like myself absolutely despise these two characters.
It’s been explicitly stated by the Dragon Ball writers that Universe 6 saiyans evolved differently and also having greater potential than Universe 7 saiyans.
For example, one of the biggest retcons in Dragon Ball history actually happened with the Super Saiyan transformation in which the universe 7 saiyans had to train extremely hard to obtain the form through either anger like Goku or Gohan or through extreme grueling training like Vegeta did in episode 114 of DBZ.
When Caulifla & Kale were first introduced in Dragon Ball Super, here’s where the concept of the Super Saiyan transformation gets badly reconned, a fellow Universe 6 saiyan named Cabba (who I first saw in The Universe 6 arc) teaches them the concept of transforming into a Super Saiyan by telling them “tap into that tingly thing” in their back to tap into it and sure enough, Caulifla did it first and then Kale and that was not only rushed, but it was a very bad retcon that I personally disagreed with.
A couple of major asspulls from the girls that I personally disagreed with was 1) Kale in her berserk form tanking a Super Saiyan Blue Kamehameha From Super Saiyan Blue Goku and 2) Caulifla somehow figuring out where Super Saiyan 2 Goku was going to go after he used Instant Transmission.
As much as I loved DBZ back in the day, but there were a lot of things that I personally didn’t like about DBZ including the fact that Gotenks went Super Saiyan 3 when Goten and Kid Trunks saw Goku transform to Super Saiyan 3 briefly at Kami’s Lookout.
2. Vegito – In episode 66 of Dragon Ball Super near the climax of “The Future Trunks/Goku Black Arc” I was ecstatic when I saw my favorite Dragon Ball fusion in Vegito make his drastic return, but back in DBZ, the potara earring fusion was stated by the elder kai to be permanent, but here’s what pissed me off greatly about that particular episode is when the writers put in a very bad retcon by stating that two non-kais that are fused with the potara earrings can now last for only an hour and not only did this recon piss me off, but also we see Vegito in Super Saiyan Blue form just literally wiping the floor with Merged Zamasu for at least 5 minutes and defuses and this greatly pissed me off as well.
3. Future Trunks – I remember when I watched DBZ back in the day, Future Trunks was the coolest character from the anime because of not only his looks, but also that Burning Slash he did against Mecha Frieza which is the sickest attack in the history of Dragon Ball.
In Dragon Ball Super however, he was retconned in one particular way with his hair color being light sky blue as Kid Trunks hair is much darker purple and I severely disagreed with that.
Now in “The Future Trunks/Goku Black Arc”, there were several asspulls that I personally disagreed with 1) Future Trunks using The Spirit Bomb to slice Merged Zamasu in half 2) Future Trunks using The Mafuuba Jar to attempt to seal away Zamasu 3) Future Trunks miraculously reviving his broken sword with energy 4) Goku Black tanking Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta.
4. The Concept Of The Super Saiyan Transformation – One of the biggest reasons why a lot of people hate Dragon Ball Super is the vicious retconning of the concept of the super saiyan transformation and it’s among the reason why a lot of the fandom despise Caulifla and Kale.
When Cabba teaches them how to go Super Saiyan, Caulifla goes Super Saiyan and then Kale goes into her berserk form when Cabba got too close to Caulifla, and while Kale was about to blast Cabba away, Caulifla out of nowhere goes Super Saiyan 2 within the same episode and seeing these two young female saiyans obtain the Super Saiyan forms so easily definitely angered a lot of the fandom including myself who felt that the concept of the super saiyan transformation was not only badly retconned, but heavily asspulled in that episode which is one of the main reasons why a lot of the fandom despise Caulifla and Kale.
The Conclusion – Despite the blatant inconsistent writing from the writers and my honest critiques of Dragon Ball Super, I still enjoy watching the anime.
