(ThyBlackMan.com) Donald Trump was elected President November 8, 2016, and the Electoral College sealed that victory December 19, 2016. This reality of this election has shook America, and the world, to its core. The consequences of the election will be an ongoing discussion for days and years to come. However, I am done explaining Donald Trump. There are some foundational problems with him becoming President, and yes we should be concerned but life must go on.
There are people in this country that are hell bent on believing Donald Trump will make their life better no matter how many times he lies. Right now on a “thank you tour” he is blatantly letting people know his campaign was one big façade. Even in the face of him admitting his lies people still believe he will act in their best interest. Sometimes seeing is believing. There are people that must have their worlds turned upside down to realize they were wrong. It makes no sense to continue to try to appeal to fact, logic, and reason with these citizens because nothing said will persuade them.
If you are a part of a marginalize group, this may be very hard to swallow because you are fully aware that your President does not care about you. Though your feelings are valid remaining angry is not going to better your situation. Trying to appeal to Donald Trump supporters is not going to cause groundbreaking change. Black Americans know this to be true if we look at our past. The people had to come up with a plan of action, and work that plan. They had to attack various areas all at once: some marched, some sat in, some fought in courtrooms and others fought in classrooms. Explaining why Trump is a disaster for minorities, and marginalized groups, will not solve any of the problems we face.
Social media is a powerful tool to bring awareness to issues, but it is not a substitute for getting out into the community and working for change. We will need come from behind our computer, laptop and smartphone screens and actually deal with the ugly that confronts our community. There are a lot of organizations that are doing great work, but there needs to be more. This burden cannot be shouldered by the few. The reality that is hard to speak is during the civil rights movement, and black nationalist movement, the burden was shouldered by the few…not the many. As a people we must all, finally, come together and work together to better our way of life, and that of our children. We must not depend on the likes of Donald Trump to do this for us.
Lastly, in order to focus for change we must be in our best mind and physical shape. The outcome of this election has caused plenty of anxiety, blatant fear, anger and high blood pressure. We cannot continue to explain Donald Trump as it is detrimental to our health. The energy we would spend getting furious all over again could be channeled into change. This is by no means going to be an easy four years, but I’m done explaining…It’s time to work.
