(ThyBlackMan.com) Almost all but forgotten actress Rae Dawn Chong, who is the daughter of veteran comedian Tommy Chong, lashed out at Oprah Winfrey a few days ago (at the time of this writing) in a radio interview on Matty P’s Happy Hour.
It was uncalled for in my eyes and looked like sour grapes from a woman who seemed to once have the world in the palm of her hand but after fading away from the big time Hollywood scene has become a bitter older woman who is envious of media mogul Oprah Winfrey’s success.
Why else would she go for the jugular in the lowest manner imaginable?
What could she have said that was so bad?
Well to bring you up to date, Rae Dawn Chong co-starred with Oprah in the screen epic “The Color Purple“, at the time as far as Rae was concerned, Oprah treated her so nicely. But after securing the role in the action movie Commando starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, things seemed to go south in the nice treatment from Oprah according to Rae.
“I starred in Commando. And she just wasn’t having me. She’s competitive. She didn’t like me. She just wasn’t having me.”
That’s not so bad, but it got worse and I don’t think that she’ll ever be considered for ANYTHING in Hollywood after what she said no matter how real it might be to her!
“If you look at the way [Oprah] looks, she looks like 60 years ago she would have been a house keeper, luckily. She would have not been a house nigger she would have been a field nigger. She was that fat chick in school and everybody loved her!”
She went on to say that Oprah “wants to be beautiful.” “She has all of the world. All the power in the world and she only wants something that is only chemical, purely impossible.”
WOW! And the funny part of all of this is that their fictional roles had similar interactions before Chong’s character was punched out by Winfrey.
Is this a case of life imitating art?
Maybe this is the reason why the acting was so intense between the two because their may have been other subconscious factors involved behind their psyches.
But this nasty tirade against Oprah was uncalled for and actually shows the world how many Blacks of different hues can treat each other worse than a racist of another color.
It’s the truth! This is something that many Black people do not want to talk about because many will say that the color issue is a thing of the past. But while many are well acquainted with the dark skinned women who have low self esteem – and I do NOT mean every Black woman but there are many – most are not aware of that lighter skinned Black woman who feels a sense of privileged merely because she is lighter. And that inflated false sense of brainwashed esteem can become even worse if her hair is straighter and features sharper more so in a European way.
What possibly makes a woman like Rae Dawn Chong lash out at an Oprah Winfrey or any other darker complected Black woman who is successful is that THEY made it in this world in their chosen profession and area of expertise and SHE didn’t!
After probably being told all her life that she was prettier and more gifted than her darker skinned peers, she, like many others felt that success in this world was a given and that the world owed them something. Not I am not attempting to demonize every light skinned Black woman because this theory is simply not true for most, but there ARE some who will feel like this to the very day that they die and will live a VERY miserable life because of it!
I believe that this is just another extended case of that old school brainwashing that many lighter skinned Blacks received from the prior generations when that type of thinking was all too common.
How DARE Oprah go on to make so much money and attain a status to become something that “someone who looks like her” should never have achieved before me!”
Trust me, this type of backward thinking still exists in abundance to this day but most will never admit what lurks deep within their twisted minds and toxic hearts.
That old way of thinking has got to be banished and until it is then those types of women who think in such a brainwashed delusional manner will never feel good about themselves truly because it is built on a comparison to others that is irrelevant in the world today as this infighting has got to stop!
Rae Dawn Chong is her worst enemy as Oprah Winfrey has moved on to do great things! And while I haven’t been the greatest fan of Ms. O, I will give credit where credit is due and I feel that her “looks”, whatever that means will boost and uplift ALL women of color but especially those who were made to feel bad about the color of their beautiful dark skin.
Shame on you Rae Dawn Chong! You need to take that old tired mess back to the brainwashed people who raised you to think that you are better than anyone who is darker than you. You see, there was a time in our history as Black people in this place called America when all you had to be was light skinned and the world thought you were so attractive.
You could have been the ugliest thing walking but you and the world accepted you as being so far above anyone else in the looks department. Hell! You could have been as “pretty” as Larry, Moe & Curly of The Three Stooges and you STILL would have been considered a catch with that type of thinking.
In that time in our history, the beautiful darker skinned Sisters caught hell and all kinds of emotional, physical and verbal abuse because in some way everyday they were reminded that they were not as desirable as their lighter counterparts who the darker Sisters KNEW weren’t as sexy and fine as they were most of the time.
But oh how times have changed but how sad it is that some of us have not. If I ever felt that Rae Dawn Chong was attractive in the past not because of her lighter skin but merely because of her looks then that was lost when I heard how she feels about Oprah.
Nothing in my eyes makes a woman uglier than a sense of entitlement over all in her midst simply because her looks are closer to the slave masters than others.
Yes, there are some drop dead gorgeous light skinned Black women but only in my eyes when they are humble and truly beautiful internally as they are externally. But never in my past have I preferred a lighter chick over a darker one simply on skin tone alone.
It’s a well known fact that Rae Dawn’s father Tommy Chong and his partner Richard “Cheech” Marin loved to smoke weed and other powerful and not so legal substances throughout their career onscreen.
…….might Rae Dawn Chong’s outburst toward Oprah Winfrey be less than just a sense of entitlement because of her light skin and more because of some kind of generational drug relapse passed on through the D.N.A. received from her father?
Hmmmmmmm. Don’t rule it out because stranger things have been discovered! If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck…….
…….well, you get the picture!
The irony is Rae Dawn was on that reunion show and said her favorite line was telling Oprah “You ain’t nothing but a big ole heifer!” She says “That was my moment” and Oprah replies “It was my moment to punch you out.” I think when Rae Dawn said that was her favorite line she was saying that to Oprah right there on the show.

This is one of many prime examples of how jealousy festers within a person for years. It doesn’t only occur in ordinary black neighborhoods/communities among ordinary ppl but among the famous and not so famous folks also. Gee whiz, the places you find hatred.
Her rant makes no sense. What did Oprah say/ do to her that was so bad? Rae Dawn Chong sounds jealous than a mofo. There’s probably a reason why Rae hasn’t been successful: HERSELF. I agree that she could be one of those light-skinned females who feels entitled or that the world should bow down to her simply b/c of her skin color.
Reality set in her a long time ago and she now wants to lash out. What better target than the darker skin, overweight Sophie who becomes thee well-known Oprah Winfrey. Didn’t she have a reunion show for the cast of Color Purple? I’m trying to remember if Rae was present.
She sat back and watched the growth of Oprah’s popularity and power. When a jealous person realizes the control, power, and influence of another person, she (or he) can’t help but display their true colors.
Her usage of the words “house nigger” and “field nigger” was uncalled for b/c she has absolutely no reason to refer to Oprah in that fashion.
Rae’s a jealous-has-been-who-knows-her heffa who’s not getting the attention she thinks she deserves b/c of her light skin.
What rock did she crawl out from under. I thought she was dead! She angry Oprah has not offer her a part in her movies. This sure as hell will, not get one. And buy the way tell her no one give a flying fig about what she thinks. Oprah keep on rocking, I know she will I have always wanted to say as one from the Audience of her show.
