(ThyBlackMan.com) In music, there are words to songs that become larger than the song itself and sometimes, larger than the artist.
We still remember Marvin Gaye asking “What’s Going On?” We still remember Public Enemy bellowing out: “19-EIGHTY-NINE’S The Number…”
Without even saying the remainder of the line, those words hold deep meaning for us. Most of us have a few songs like that.
In my daily life, I can hear the original beautiful style of Snoop Doggy Dogg rhyming: “With so much drama in the LBC, it’s kinda hard being Snoop D-O-double G…”
Damn, I’m feeling his words now.
With so much drama in the nation and in the world, I am feeling a greater degree of difficulty being a pro-black revolutionary in a world gone soft and mad. It’s hard because you put in work for your people, knowing that a number of them will never appreciate you and some of them will even hate you and curse your name simply because they disagree with you.
The drama is nearly palpable, especially when people attack me for speaking a different opinion, while waving the flag and speaking dearly about the freedoms we have in this nation. Do they realize that one of them is freedom of speech?
“But I, somehow, some way, keep coming up with funky ass hits like every single day…”
Snoop is in my head again.
I’m feeling those words, because I’ve been attacked, I’m fighting the good fight and I’ve lost a few battles, but somehow, some way, I still stand proud with my head held high, bleeding and bruised and pale. Now I’m in the lab, and I keep coming up with more funky ass hits every single day against the ignorant and the oppressive.
I keep writing, transferring the game into new arenas, including stage plays and films. And everything always carries a message, because I pursue the revolution daily.
Most of the fools who rail against me have no idea what real revolutionaries are doing. They hate me, but they can’t stay away from me. They keep sending me letters and email, disparaging my name in public and posting ignorance on my social media pages.
They think that my mission is whatever they can see on any given day and that what they see is all I am about.
Good. It’s not their revolution anyway.
Whether you love me, hate me, or ignore me, I will keep it coming until I breathe my last breath. I will continue to speak the truth and I will continue to create new venues for the truth to be spoken.
Now, the music is gone and Marcus Garvey is in my head.
“The civilization of today is gone drunk and crazy with its power and by such it seeks through injustice, fraud and lies to crush the unfortunate. I say, cheer up, for better days are ahead. I shall write the history that will inspire the millions that are coming and leave the posterity of our enemies to reckon with the hosts for the deeds of their fathers.”–Marcus Garvey
I won’t run from the struggle, I will lead the charge.
I will continue to speak the truth.
The background music helps.
