(ThyBlackMan.com) At first the mass media just about completely ignored Ron Paul, and when they did mention him it was merely to say he had not a snowball’s chance of winning the nomination. Now, though, now they are giving him much more air play focusing on derogatory comments attributed to him more than 20 years ago, comments which he disavows and says he actually did not write. I say this not to excuse him. However, whether he did or did not pen these remarks, we must note that he does not now espouse those views. And while we certainly should take them into account in judging his viability for the presidency, we must put them in their proper context. . .

Lyndon Baines Johnson, LBJ, is down in the history books as a champion of the Black community, having pushed through Congress the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which broke the back of legalized segregation in America. In so doing, Johnson alienated his fellow white Southerners, and most of them left to join the Republican Party. Nonetheless, LBJ was undeterred and continued to speak out against bigotry until the end of his days.

However, no one in the media has ever, to my knowledge, made mention of the fact that Lyndon Johnson in 1957 as a top adviser to President Eisenhower spoke out sharply and vociferously against Eisenhower’s proposed civil rights legislation. LBJ cautioned Eisenhower to scuttle his plans to pass the same legislation that he would later go on to sponsor seven years later.

Note how Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, as Majority Leader in the Senate, pushed through many measures aimed at ending inequality, and for this he is fondly remembered.  The fact that he was once a leader of the Ku Klux Klan, while sitting in Congress, was not mentioned by the media 20, 30, or even 40 years later!

Did you know that Ronald Regan in 1980 kicked off his successful campaign for the presidency in Philadelphia, Mississippi? This was the town where three civil rights workers were savagely tortured and killed by a mob led by police in 1963. Many in the Black community, and many fair minded people of all races, felt that this was a signal to white racists that Reagan wanted their support. However, this was never, to my knowledge, ever discussed in the mass media.

Let’s take a look at Bill Clinton, America’s saxophone playing “First Black President,” who today has his office in Harlem. Clinton interrupted his campaign for the presidency in 1992 to rush back to Little Rock to sign the papers to put to death a young Black man so brain damaged that when they took him out of his cell to walk the Last Mile, he told the jailers not to throw away his food, he was coming back to finish it. This was the same Bill Clinton who so greatly intensified the War on Drugs, which is really a War on Black America, that the number of Black inmates in prison, during his tenure, for mere drug possession increased many, many times over.  No one in the mass media has charged him with being a racist for any of this.

The differential in prison time for the possession of crack cocaine, as opposed to powdered cocaine, is 17 to 1. (Whites tend to use powder and Blacks crack.) But none of our presidents or anyone of those individuals sitting in Congress who passed these drug laws, and kept them on the books for more than 20 years, is accused by the press of being racist.

So, yes, some derogatory statements appeared under Ron Paul’s name decades ago, but why are others’ transgressions quickly forgotten while his are being dug up and paraded around? And speaking of the Drug War that is actually a War on Black America, Ron Paul is the only candidate in the race, including President Obama, who has called for the immediate repeal of these unjust, racially inspired and racially enforced drug laws.  So, yes, take into account what Ron Paul may have said decades ago, but note carefully what others are saying, and not saying, today.

I hope these few things help put ones mind at ease..First-I think it’s important for you to know~All MY FELLOW AMERICANS~ I LUV YOU..Now that you know that, know also, Ronald Ernest Paul did fire the person who wrote those letters, the mans integrity supersedes any others of any individual I know-to date. He walks his talk-He didn’t vote for Patriot Act nor the NDAA. That is very important to me, no matter what of my~racial status~but esp. for African Americans, after having struggled too long, rising up only to have that apitomy of an ObamaNation signed it away~for words I cannot find-I’M IN SUCH AWE!fOLKS, ASK YOU SELF a COMMON SENSE QUESTION: What law don’t we have/or would prevent anybody {esp. terrorist} from being investigated, arrested, and brought to Justice? I ask just do you homework-_there’s more to that Bill-and it reaches far beyond AlQueda/TERRORISTS..There’s also[AND LOOK THIS UP ON YOUR OWN}, in it there’s the Homegrown Terrorist; the Domestic terrorist-those are Americans whose portrays conduct that: BELLIGERENT [do you know the scale that words reaches? that’s more than half of America’s teen’s gone thru puberty]; UNRULY; those who keep curtains closed; buying up alot of gold;Catholic; anti-abortionist; those who support a particular political party{I can only assume it’s at there discretion which those would be-and yes, Ron Paul is labeled}The only one he’s dangerous to is the GOVERNMENT~BECAUSE HE CAN’T/WON’T BE BOUGHT! the list goes on, and on. You do know, Obama gave all the bankers, either a seat in congress, or running Depts like-the Treasury. Curious:

Re: returning money to nazis or the KKK…

Why would anybody ‘return’ money to those racist organizations ? [Paul won’t]

Is it better for Ron Paul to have some money to advocate against the War on Drugs, the Patriot Act, perpetual overseas military commitments, and Obama’s new powers to use the military to arrest and hold American Citizens, indefinitely – without trial…

    – or –

… is it better for the KKK and American Nazi Party to have some more money in their pockets to do whatever mischief they might plan to do with it ?

  4. curious says:

Did Ron Paul return campaign funds raised by the KKK and neo-Nazi groups?

  5. GoRP says:

You forget the most important aspect of those so called racist comments.

    1. The newsletter said, “Black people make poor voting decisions.” In general, colored people vote Democrat and in the eyes of any conservative, that is a bad voting decision. Does anyone call the DNC racist for claiming that they have the Black Vote as one of their primary demographics?

    2. The newsletter said, “Black people commit a disproportionate percentage of violent crimes.” This is a statistical fact. Why is everyone so afraid to address this issue and it’s causes/effects. This is the most important factor affecting racism. To solve a problem, you must first acknowledge it. The cause is obvious, a combination of poverty and our so called educational system perpetually teaching young colored people that they cannot succeed because America is racist.

Ron Paul says the government is racist, that the government classifies us into groups and voting blocks which highlights our differences rather than celebrating our commonalities. A cohesive society is a society which has a common culture. As a nation, we cannot survive if we do not bond together as Americans, not hyphenated Americans.

  6. Jim says:

“And speaking of the Drug War that is actually a War on Black America…”
What a complete load of BS. The American media, government and society does everything in it’s power to placate the blacks in the United States. Have you ever stopped for one second to wonder that it may be your own fault that blacks live horrible lives everywhere on Earth, unless couched comfortably amoung whites who protect you from yourselves? Get over yourselves, your egos far out size your accomplishments.

  7. reasonable mind says:

Victor you make the most sense “no time for unintended consequences”.

Another thoughtful discussion regarding Ron Paul’s more progressive policies and those old, lingering allegations.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/therootdc/post/ron-paul-beyond-the-racist-newsletters/2011/12/28/gIQAFtdVOP_blog.html

    Excerpt:

“Paul has a common sense approach to deficit reduction and wants to bring home the troops and end all foreign wars. The latter goal appeals to Americans in both main parities who are put off by the costly and casualty-ridden wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Paul could also win supporters drawn to his call to end government intrusion, at public expense, into people’s private lives.

Paul’s more practical political positions could help voters move beyond the newsletters. His support for ending the militarized war on drugs—which has contributed to the mass incarceration of the poor and people of color in the last two decades—is quite progressive and far from racist.”

  9. Victor says:

Thank to all of you for igniting and engagng in such a sustained, thoughtful, and respectful exchange.

I was 9 years old in 1957, but I remember growing up in rural Virginia. I was not following the news much at that age. I was living in fear of an unchanging state government and local attitudes, which would probably have changed even slower under a federal government that Paul envisions as constitutional. Senator Byrd (ex-KKK) from neighboring West Virginia never ran for president. Had he done so, he would have had a lot of explaining to do thanks to the federal government as it has evolved from through its history. I support the evolution. Dr. Paul is a true patriot, but his support of a different vision of the constitution needs to be debated anew, in the light of the positive and negative changes that have come with its evolution. I have a problem with social darwinism, but I have friends white and black who embrace it.

States’ right versus a strong federal naional government is as legitimate an issue to debate in 2012 as it was in 1787. As a history buff and as a political junkie, I pay attention to symbolism and to substance. I am a resident of Virginia. I have lived in New York, Connecticut, Michigan, Arizona, and New Jersey. I have also traveled and lived abroad. The evolution of the U.S. into a global power sustains and restrains our freedom to engage in this exchange. As nations of men and women, of peoples, leaders everywhere have made defining decisions. These decisions were not made in a vacuum. They have had far reaching effects, but we are here in this present global moment as a result of them, all of them. Perhaps, we are here in spite of them. Call them mistakes, call them self-serving, call them an expression of exceptionalism or whatever. I see America and the world’s best days in this present moment. I read about the incarceration rate of African Americans and Latinos. I also read about solutions. Those solutions are less likely to come about without national leadership.

The press and the media have been criticized in the past for not exposing racism; I will not now criticize them for raising legitimate questions about statements written under Dr. Paul’s name in the 1990s. It understandable that when you have an affinity to a candidate that you might not want the press pursue a particularly troublesome line of question. But it is indefensible to criticize the press for doing just that in this case. After going after Cain for allegations of sexual harassment and adultery, what we think of a national press that did not expose potential racism in another candidate today for the presidency in the same election cycle.

Are you suggesting that because past presidents have been racist and the national media may not have delved into it to your satisfaction that Paul should get a pass on his alleged past? Should he not have to address the issue forthrightly?

As a libertarian, Paul has highlighted problems that we agree are racist, wrong, and unfair. The problems still persist. So addressing concerns verbally does not end them. The majority in this country has not yet been persuaded that many of its bad laws are bad. We have to engage in this process of discourse, elections, and legislation to bring about changes. Patience is needed. Because someone fearfully screams that time is running out does not mean it is. My senator, Jim Webb (who is not seeking reelection) has an omnibus crime bill that addresses a slew differential sentencing issue and other inequities that Dr. Paul supports. Despite the bill’s bipartisan support and sponsorship, the GOP leadership blocked its consideration, demanding 60 votes so far. Senator Webb hopes to attach it as an amendment on a must pass bill when the time comes. It had over 56 supporters, endorsement by many states attorney generals.

As Dr. Paul knows, under our consitution, the president can only do so much! There are political and constitutional constraints on what even the legislature can accomplish. That is the way our system is until they (and we) change it. Yet in the presidential election the people have an opportunity to “nudge” the process forward. As people, we sometimes, it seems, get it right; other times not.

I invest my energy into being an optimist. I can live with having the federal government emasculated. I recognize though that that will not be the cure all. At this moment in our national history, we need to listen to each other, learn from each other, feel and share each other’s legitimate concerns. Out of many, we need to become one. Practically, the national government needs to be restrained severely in its spending. Over time the national debt need needs to be reduced. This will require those who benefitted the most during the unpaid wars being required to pay more in taxes. This means the national government must adopt policies that would preserve and grow the middle class and assure their security at the expense of the oil industries, big banks, billionaire chief executives, and wall street traders whose interests and profits have been saved and sustained by government at the cost of the blood, bravery, and broken bodies of our troops. I like what Paul says, but what would actually change under his administration. Some think that he is a threat to the status quo. He is in an odd way, but what is the status quo? It is gridlock now. What will break that status quo? More gridlock? I think our politics is at a tipping point with this election. We cannot afford anymore unintended consequences.

  10. My wife and I are strong supporters of Ron Paul, the only candidate worthy of becoming President of Our United States! As a former immigrant from Germany, and later from Canada, I have seen economic problems from every sides. Ron Paul can vouch for his honesty and highly developed work ethic.

  11. Arthur says:

Dr. Smith, yes, Wilson was terrible. He said that the 1915 film Birth of A Nation which celebrated the rise of the Ku Klux Klan was an accurate portrayal of history, and he was a former history professor.

From what I have seen the danger from Paul would not be a frontal assault on civil rights, but that his absolute belief in states rights, at all costs, might undermine civil rights.

I think the reason Johnson and Bryd began to sing a different tune was that the mood of the country had changed. The Court facilitated this change in mood generated by world events, namely the need of the US to present a more inclusive face if it wanted to win the allegiance of the then newly liberated third world nations. We still have that need. But, yes, there are no guarantees.

  12. Windy says:

Bottom line, Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate who stands for PEACE and freedom.

There is no one of us without fault but for the future of this country and the world, Ron Paul is the best choice.

  13. John Taurus says:

The media in America is an arm of the criminal organization that now controls America. The media sets Black people against White people with its biased reporting. This is purposely done so as to prevent Blacks and Whites working together. Keep that racial animosity going so they won’t pay attention to what’s happening in Washington, DC. Not a peep from the media about the Patriot missles Israel got from America for defense that Israel sold to China. Our whole defense system technology sold to China by our “friend”. Backstabbing treachery!! Americans are Israeli slaves. We fight Isrel’s wars and give Israel our wealth. Ron Paul’s first act as President should be to restore a “free” press. Take the media out of the Zionist hands. Ron Paul’s second act as President should be to launch investigations for treason agains most of the house. These senators and congressmen sold out their citizens. Let’s send a message to politicians that betray America.

  14. Donald H. Smith, Ph.D. says:

    Dr. Lewin,

On the other hand, the Virginia born elitist professor, president of Princeton Woodrow Wilson, who later as US president sold out the country to bankers, proved to be one of the most racist of US presidents when he totally segregated Washington, DC: civil service, separate schools, restaurants, housing, unequal service in stores, evan toilets. His history was a fair indicator of the kind of president he would be.
I believe the persons you cited are the exception rather than the rule.

    Donald H. Smith, Ph.D.

  15. Arthur says:

Thoughtful questions, Amiga Joe. I don’t have the answers.

This piece was aimed specifically at the accusations of racism. It offered a larger perspective that might prove helpful in assessing them. All of these candidates, like all of us, are flawed. The only question is which of these imperfect beings would be best as president. Each of us must make that decision.

The Old Jim Crow, legalized segregation is over. The Supreme Court’s 1954 decision outlawing segregation had to violate precedent, since the Constitution itself condoned slavery. And this is where conservative, strict interpretation of the Constitution leads to a complete dead end.

Hence, no matter who believes what about States Rights, the Old Jim Crow is dead and gone. Could it return? Perhaps. But we know for sure that the New Jim Crow, that is, mass incarceration in the Age of supposed Color Blindness is here with a vengeance. If we were to end the Drug War, which Paul alone among the candidates proposes, that would help curtail the flow of Black men into prison.

The only question is the trade off. What would it be in a Ron Paul presidency? Yes, the government helps protect us from the big corporations and economic slavery. But if continue as we are, economic bondage is inevitable. That same government is overfeeding the spendthrift banks, the relentless war machine, and a drug industry gone wild. All of which Paul’s policies would also help to curtail.

But again what would be the bottom line? And who will decide? We will. That is why we each have one vote, and so we must engage in a robust, free grass roots debate just like the one we are having now. . .

  16. AmigaJoe says:

Sadly, I can’t agree. I read those newsletters when they were written back in the mid-late 90’s. Those kind of views don’t simply go away. Unfortunately a lot of people seem to be falling for a clever strategy of Ron Paul; you see in the stripped-down, neutered government envisioned by the Libertarian Dr. Paul, each of us is truly on our own. Protections against discrimination would vanish, ‘Whites Only’ signs would be perfectly legal, struggling mothers and children would have nowhere to turn for help. Lose your job? Tough! No unemployment. Another employer offers to hire you for $1.00 an hour? Take it or leave it. Like it or not, the government is our only protection from institutional racism, powerful corporations, and economic slavery. The world Dr. Paul envisions wouldn’t be far off from America circa 1850. I’m sure many white people look back fondly at life in those ‘good old days’. I can’t imagine how a black person could.

  17. Crazy Horse says:

Dr.Martin Luther King forwarded his Spirit to Dr.Ron Paul

  18. DenPratt says:

And after 30+ years we know who Ron is, how Ron speaks, what Ron does, and for what Ron stands. There’s no deception, no guile; only frank and honest speech, never flinching, even in the face of overwhelming ridicule and condemnation, he speaks his truth to power and to political correctness. What fair person believes for a second that closet racism is the one ‘dirty little secret’ that he has not spoken out loud? The more likely explanation is that he never believed, or said, any of it.

The people who smear Ron are the ones whose authoritarian policies have:

    – destroyed the black family
    – imprisoned millions of nonviolent black males
    – killed black servicemen in unnecessary wars
    – prohibited blacks from undercutting the competition with lower salaries
    – ensured that black parents cannot move their child to a good school
    – increased black teenage pregnancy
    – killed millions of black babies before they were born
    – imposed licensing laws that prevented blacks from being able to start low capital businesses
    – increased regulations that reduced entry level jobs
    – destroyed the value of the dollar so that blacks’ earnings and savings disappear
    – tricked them into low interest teaser loans, leading tot he loss of all their equity
    – engage in politics of group envy and group privilege
    – disproportionately killed black men with the death penalty
    – waged endless, murderous war on non-whites after dehumanizing them

So, they want us to believe Ron Paul is the racist? The liberator who wants every *individual* citizen to live their life to the fullest — as he sees fit, and not as the political elite allow.

Are we tired of being manipulated? Are we ready to reject the race card played so cynically and so obviously, and embrace freedom for everyone.

  19. JD says:

yes current drug laws were based on racism, just as the gun laws are; Malcom X pointed that out, and supported the 2nd ammendment.

  20. Arthur Lewin says:

Victor, thanks for your eloquent, thoughtful response.

But did you know that Johnson opposed a proposed civil rights bill in 1957? And did the press ever ask him why he opposed it?

Was Senator Byrd ever asked in the press to explain his past as a head honcho in the Ku Klux Klan?

Did the national press ever take Reagan to task and ask him why he kicked off his campaign in the very town where three young people fighting for social justice were slaughtered?

Yes, Clinton’s shenanigans were exposed in the press, but they were not seen as racist, but as “being tough on crime” and “standing up to the Blacks.”

And with regard to the differential sentencing of crack vs. powdered cocaine, yes, changes were made in the difference in severity of punishment for the two. But still one is punished 17 times more harshly than the other. Why isn’t the mass media shedding light on that if they are so concerned about racial issues? Congress and the press are just fine with that.

And why aren’t they focusing on the fact that thanks to the War On Drugs, the fourth amendment which is supposed to protect us from illegal search and seizure for all intents and purposes no longer exists? Ten percent of New York’s population, 700,000 people, were stopped and frisked last year. Why is the national press not looking into that. Yes, Ron Paul should be pushed and prodded on the issue of the newsletters, but why are 20 year old comments he has disavowed more important to the press than the abuse of power Black and Brown New Yorkers are suffering at the hands of the police right now?

The one thing that i remember the most clearly over the past 39-40 years of my school days at Brandeis University in1970’s are my student adviser’s words that when he was growing up that his grand parents and parents used the term “‘goyishe kup,’” meaning that the “Non-Jews are Stupid”

Later in life I learned that the exact translation of “GOYISHE KUP” means that the “Cattle are STUPID”..

I remember him recalling whatt his father told him when he was growing up in Eastern Europe. One of them being that when his father was in high school he and a group of friends would skip school early on Fridays and go over to his friend’s father’s butcher shop. That they would buy at cost any cows , that had not been butchered by the end of the day on Friday before the begining of shabat . They would take the cow home and wash it and then the boys would procede to “beat the udders of the cows so that they would swell up and turn pink” so as to sell them to the “GOYISHE KUP” as milk producing cows.

The part that I remember him asking me if the East Europeans are so naive, so gullible and so stupid to buy old “non milk producing cows” from a bunch of young Jewish Boys.

So thinking of it now I agree with the Jewish saying that the “GOYISHE KUP” are indeed” Stupid” as they believe that a Bunch of Arab Muslim Kids who were not able to Fly a Cessna Airplane took it upon themselves to FLY a Boing Jumbo Jet outwitting the US Military and Civilian authorities. The “Jewish Lightning Insurance Scam” of the 1960’s is still alive and well has been put to good use by Larry Silverstein with the help of his sayanim jews made a financial killing in imploding wtc by putting 15 million down and comming out with 7 billion dollars for buidings that no one wanted to buy because it would have cost a billion dollars to remove the asbestos from. Then on top of that the people in America actually believe that they actually decide who is elected President or for that that actual VOTE is really counted and makes a difference in deciding who represents them in the White House and congress. http://www.bollyn.com/index.php

The Israeli Defense Firm That Tallies The Iowa Caucus
    By Christopher Bollyn
    1-1-8

The Iowa caucus is only a few days away and the nation’s attention will be directed to the results, which signify the beginning of the U.S. presidential race. But does anyone watch who tallies the results of the Iowa caucus?

The Iowa caucus results were tallied in 2004 by a company that is headed by a man whose company was bought by Elron Electronics, the Israeli defense firm. I suspect that it will be the same this year. Don’t expect to see any grassroots political activists doing the tally in Iowa. The Israeli defense establishment takes care of that part of the American “democratic” election process.

    VOXEO

In the summer of 2004, I first learned that a foreign and out-of-state company using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology tallied the Iowa caucus results.

The system used to tally the 2004 Iowa caucus results was provided by a company called Voxeo, which was apparently based in Orlando, Florida. (Yellow flag goes up in the mind of those familiar with Orlando and electronic vote fraud history

  24. Victor says:

Thank you, for putting the charges against Dr. Paul in the perspective you did. However, a man is known by the company that he keeps as well as the words he speaks.

Bill Clinton and the others you named did not get a free pass for executing a mentally deficient black man, nor for castigating Sista Soulja to appease and win the vote of racist supporters. Neither was it enough for Barack Obama’s supporters to defend him against racism when the charges were raised about the black theology his pastor preached; the media demanded that he speak to the press and to the American people for himself. It was a test he had to pass.

It is not sufficient defense of Paul to criticize the media by implying that Dr. Paul is beng treated unfairly. I, for one, want to see and hear how Dr. Paul answers the relevant questions himself if he wants to be president. This is his past. He needs to address the concerns directly.

No candidate gets a thorough vetting until their poll numbers suggest that they might win. Dr. Paul has earned the media attention he is now receiving. For strategic reasons, which I appreciate, he is currently avoiding the national press in favor of local media outlets. In Iowa, the race charges may not be that important to the local media. At some point, however, he needs to address the charges fully in the natonal press. If he frames the reponse properly, it will help the country with its awareness of its historical race problem and the progress we are making. But until Dr. Paul addresses what was said in his name, how can he and we learn our truth?

  25. Jamerson Mckracken says:

Ron Paul is a virtuous man, I have seen him in action, he cares not about the color of a man, everyone is equal in his eyes- He truly cares about this country, he is the ONLY candidate that does… He will pardon ALL non-violent drug offenders upon entry to office- He cares about the USA, that is his main concern- I am a white man, but I consider myself brothers with all mankind- we need peace on earth, And Ron is the only candidate that wants peace- Vote for him- This world is a a f’ed up place at a f’ed up time… Ron is an older guy but he has WISDOM, and he is super-smart, vote for him for a better world- peace my brothers-

    Good Article Arthur Lewin.

  34. Mr. Everyman says:

Ron Paul IS the next civil rights movement. That is all.

  35. Adan Rodriguez says:

Good article. It’s humorus to see people crying racists are clearly the ones supporting race baiting tactics just to keep their power.

  36. Denver Lawyer says:

Dr. Paul also wrote “Abortion and Liberty” – 1983 – an article in which Dr. Paul asks medical professionals to refrain from assisting the state in criminal executions (knowing that an alarming number of those executed are black men), as well as asking medical professionals to refrain from working on human experiments with the military – citing the Tuskagee experiments where black soldiers with syphilis were treated badly. In addition he has written extensively on both the issues of racism and discrimination. He supports minority efforts to obtain true freedom and has done so consistently for over three decades. Yet all of this is somehow disregarded by the media. Very interesting.

  37. Officer Perez says:

It is about time ThyBlackMan return its sanity and credibilty with Ron Paul supporters AKA freedom suppoters. Good job, because the last few articles have been pretty lazy on the objectivity.

    Veterans for Ron Paul

  38. I am filled with pride at the stress on logic and rationality in your arguments. Truly, Dr. Paul could not have expressed it as concisely himself. People of all races and beliefs, all over the nation are coming to view Ron Paul as the only answer to the problems that beset our country. Let’s all do our best to see him elected!

  39. GeraldMon says:

Funny how no one calls undeclared wars on 3rd world countries, banker bailouts, and Patriot Act bills that imprison foreigners indefinitely without trial “racist”.

  40. OldBlindDog says:

Dr. Paul allowed someone else (probably Lew Rockwell) to post stupid prejudiced comments in a newsletter he sold twenty years ago. Dr. Paul should call a news conference and stand up and take the heat and get it over, because his critics are carping on this because it’s the only thing they have.

President Obama is asking for another $1.2 Trillion in debt ceiling. Dr. Paul needs to keep the message on point, namely that wars are expensive and divisive, and the US cannot keep up this pace of spending and borrowing without beginning to streamline government.

I want the debate. I personally believe that the concept of the EPA is vitally important to the US. I don’t believe that it is run well, or that its mission is clear. So I want the debate about every penny we spend and every penny we take in.

Is this the right thing to do? Is this the right way to do it? Is this enough money for it? Is this too much?

Develop a mission statement for every agency in the government. Define its mission, its organization structure and its revenue stream. Vote on that as an amendment to the Constitution. If it wins, we have a Congressionally mandated, Constitutionally approved agency of the government with a clear reason for being.

In addition, Dr. Paul needs a strong VP. I suggest asking LTG Russell Honore’.

  41. Don says:

Authur, I must say thank you for a well written article! This has been my thoughts since all the news channels jumped on the media smear campaign!

  42. dan says:

The last paragraph sums it up very nicely…couldn’t have put it better myself.

  43. KJ says:

I appreciate this clear headedness, but would like to point out that even in youtubes of Ron Paul speeches and appearances contemporaneous with the newsletters, he never spoke the way the 1% of nasty stuff over 10 years reflects. In the 80’s, before the newsletters were written, he pointed out multiple times the racial bias of our drug laws and judicial system. In fact, one of the many times quoted as ‘awful’ things in the newsletters is actually, read in context, a condemnation of racial bias in the judiciary, given that such a higher percentage of minority suspects are actually jailed than white – – unless you actually believe they are more criminal. (Ron Paul’s words from his own mouth in youtube speaches during the period makes it clear he did not.)

Others ran the newsletter, but it was HIS side business and his persona was all over it. But it was 22 years ago, and nothing he has said or done before or since indicates any racism on his part, to the contrary.
