(ThyBlackMan.com) I watched curiously as Bryant Gumbel, host of “Real Sports,” referred to NBA Commissioner David Stern as a “modern day overseer.” The comments rocked the world, probably more so than anything Gumbel has ever said in the past. Based on Bryant Gumbel’s remarks over the years, I quietly suspect that beneath the polished, articulate demeanor lies a Black Panther always waiting to happen. In fact, that’s one of the reasons I respect him so much – there’s nothing more threatening than a powerful, brilliant Black man willing to go to battle for a cause he believes in. Bryant Gumbel might be more digestible for the power structure if he were a little less-educated – I’m sure that David Stern and company are left off balance after being called a racist by a man who knows more four syllable words than anyone he’s ever met.

I have some points of disagreement on this one Boyce. I have a hard time utilizing slave terminology for young men making more in a year than most of us Black men will make in a life time. The concept of overseer (although technically it maybe correct) metaphorically is horribly, horribly, wrong and devalues our experience as slaves in this country.
The fact is that fundamentally these guys have options. They can choose not to play, they can choose to play overseas, they can choose to play in smaller leagues in the US.
So the distinction is the amount of capital the contractors should get in relation to the owner in this instance. Not some slave versus slaver owner revolt with Stern being the overseer of the plantation.
Also the concept of abuse implied by the statement of people being more offended about puppies being abused then millionaire Black men is very troubling.
The argument is squarely a management labor argument. Management always seeks to exploit labor to maximize profits, and labor seeks to organize to resist the exploitation and get what they consider a fairer return for their labor. Everything else is just fodder for negotiations in a multi-billion dollar business like the NBA.
