(ThyBlackMan.com) It’s being reported that the rapper T.I. ( aka Clifford Harris) has a probation revocation hearing coming up on October 15. The rapper was arrested for drug possession with his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle. The incident occurred on September 2 of this year, and they were allegedly in possession of Codeine, Ecstasy and Marijuana, which was uncovered in what police say was a routine traffic stop.
I spoke with someone who is familiar with the case against T.I. I asked him if T.I. was going back to prison. He said that while he isn’t sure what the rapper’s fate will be, there is an inherent contradiction in his case. While we can almost expect that T.I. will be punished for his latest violation of the law, the same can’t be said for other celebs, like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton. Both of these young women have been arrested time and time again for one offense after another. In each case, they are typically given a slap on the wrist.
Artists like T.I. and Lil Wayne have done hard time in prison for their violations of the law. We could try to argue that their crimes are worse than those of Lohan and Hilton (I don’t agree with this point), buy you can’t disconnect their experience with the justice system from the disparities between white females and African American males.
According to the United States Department of Justice, black males are roughly 35 times more likely to go to prison than white females. Additionally, black children are nine times more likely than white children to have a parent in the penitentiary. TI’s children have already spent a year without their father, during his most recent stint in prison. If his hearing on the 15th doesn’t go well, they may not see their father for a very long time.
This is not to say that T.I. didn’t play a role in the creation of his problems. I’ve written publicly that I was incredibly disappointed with TI after this latest incident. He not only disappointed me, but he’s let down millions of fans who believed in him, and the children he’s vowed to raise. But I must wonder if this were Lindsay Lohan being caught with weed and codeine in her car, would there be a possibility of a prison sentence? Both she and Paris have been arrested for cocaine possession and Paris was recently videotaped in a car where her male friend ran over a woman and drove away. Lohan and Hilton have rap sheets that could probably rival those of T.I. and Lil Wayne, yet we typically expect that they are going to “Macgeyver” their way out of every situation.
If a black male rapper were doing all the things that Lindsay and Paris were doing, would their trips to the court house be cute little celebrity appearances, or situations where they’d be expected to face real consequences? If these artists were sent to rehab or jail, would they be able to skip out of their sentences or miss court dates whenever they wish? What about black males in the hood being caught with dope vs. college students who get drunk and high every weekend on college campuses? Do we consider all of these cases in the same way?
I won’t answer these questions for you, since our perspectives as Americans vary widely based on where we come from and who we represent. But with almost no exception, we can argue that the experience of black men in the criminal justice system is quite different from that of white females. This is true even if you’re a celebrity.

Oh please WAKE UP it’s all about ENERGY. Rappers have an ARROGANT ENERGY that revolves around CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR and a FU*CK the world attitude. They are very vocal about this. It makes people and society EAGER to TEAR THEM DOWN. T.I is a 3 time convicted FELON, did you get the FELON PART?
Good article but Paris and Lindsey’s ENERGY warrants wanting to MESS WITH THEM and toy with them. 45 days, 1 month in jail etc
T.I.’s ENERGY is that of a CRIMINAL “that got away” and managed to make it to the SPOTLIGHT, he represents one of the ones not caught but did what he wanted in his community and made it when he should not have.
Societies SUBCONSCIOUS notion is that He SLIPPED through the hands of Society like OJ and should have been caught. It’s HARD for Society to see rappers like him MAKE IT. Particularly when you consider their ENERGY and the CULTURE they portray. It brings FRUSTRATION and RESENTMENT, and not to just White people.
I don’t see Will Smith or Hill Harper experiencing the same type of plight, but then again they are NOT 3 time felons.
I guess EVERYONE has angles. Many people would say that Lindsey and Paris are targeted and made examples of because they are celebrities, wow the irony.
Black people, his family nor our communities could save T.I. in his developmental years, we CAN’T save him now. He went to jail for having an ARSENAL of weapons despite ALREADY being a felon. That’s a SLAP in Societies face right there and they will make a POINT to get him as they have.
Another mentally undeveloped Brother who managed to wiggle out of his surroundings and make it even though METAPHYSICALLY he’s suppose to be on the LEVEL OF HIS MENTAL THINKING.
Another reason rappers are DESPISED. Usually this METAPHYSICAL universe will makes sure these guys don’t rise too HIGH without a fall back into their rightful METAPHYSICAL ENERGY. This is how you GROW, God APPROVES that. We CARRY Black Men to soaring heights despite their mentalities. The Universe will intercept this and bring them back to their criminal minded domain.
Ever think of God and this Metaphysical universe? Everything’s not racist.
Kid n Play was never arrested, Run DMC was never arrested, I could go on and those where times CLOSER to slavery. It’s all about ENERGY, and these men being in the positions that they are in with the NEGATIVE ENERGY that they radiate makes them something to TEAR DOWN.
Society didn’t want to TEAR DOWN Kid n Play, Run DMC, LL Cool J or other rappers who managed to have GREAT SUCCESS but where NOT a SLAP in Societies face.
I right this as of October 17, so as you may know the Universe has brought his underdeveloped drug induced mind back to his reality, a reality he promotes and portrays in his music. How ironic.
