(ThyBlackMan.com) That is a question on the minds of many and has been the subject of numerous studies and research. The simple straightforward answer across the board is a resounding YES; there is indeed a link between poverty and violence for youth. Especially as it pertains to minorities and those in the inner cities of places like Detroit, Chicago and New York. And when you combine that with the state of our economy and the shortage or disappearance of jobs here in America you have a recipe for disaster in the “urban centers” of the mainland as precious US jobs are shipped abroad.
When one lives in poverty – as many disadvantaged minority youth of today; there is a sense of hopelessness. When this sets in, the effected group will often turn to crime as a way to balance the scale of economic parity. This in turn leads to violence. That is due to some extent, to the fact that some disgruntled minority youth deal drugs and turn to other forms of disruptive behavior in order to survive in their “underground” economic environment. This often leads to turf wars, violence relative to unpaid drug debts and so on.
And even if one doesn’t resort to peddling drugs, there is the lure of joining street gangs, most of which are inherently prone to violence. Drive by shootings, muggings and fistfights are commonplace in cities like the above mentioned New York, Chicago and Detroit. And speaking of Detroit; if you want to see just how bad the situation can get consider how the city has declared bankruptcy; exacerbating an already volatile economic dilemma. Couple that with the fact that the Motor City already had a high crime rate to begin with.
Many minority youth are also faced with a harsh reality in terms of employment by virtue of a lack of vocational/educational skills and training. They go looking for jobs in an ever shrinking job market and find that not only do they have to compete with people who have been in the job market for years and were laid off or let go. But they also come to the realization that they are in competition for jobs with a huge group of undocumented immigrants as well, many of whom are willing to work for next to nothing compared to an American citizen.
So there you have it. Situations of poverty to begin with. Not much hope of getting a job of any kind. A whole neighborhood of others in the same boat and yes, you definitely have a link between poverty and violence for today’s youth. The lure of gangs, dealing drugs, no recreational or faith based outlets in any given community is a problem. The targeting of homes, individuals and businesses for theft and vandalism or disruptive behavior, to some, becomes a way of life.
Yes, poverty and violence are indeed linked together. The crime rate and unemployment in a community, invariably, will rise together. It is certainly the hope of almost every American that one day this won’t be the case, but for now it is definitely a sad reality and cause for concern. Whether one is directly affected by it or not. Unless the powers that be in law enforcement, government, elected officials, faith based community leaders, business owners, educators and concerned parents come together to resolve this matter it will continue to wreak havoc on the plight of urban centers of America.

May God offer his compassion on your racist input. Come back in the natural when you learn how to spell! Again. may God have mercy on your racist soul.
There are other countries that have more wide spread poverty yet the violance is low. The differance is that they don’t have ignorant, angry, violant niggers in thier country.
Oh, and one more dreaded comment. Maybe that Biblical story about Hamm is us since it seems after slavery and civil rights,we just can’t get it together.
“Unless the powers that be in law enforcement, gov’t, elected officials, faith based community leaders, business owners, educators, and concerned parents come together to resolve this matter it will continue to wreck havoc on the plight of urban centers of America.”
Every group you mentioned has somebody who’s got their own thang called corruption going on. Their like a band of thieves and everybody knows there’s no honor among thieves.
When law enforcement and gov’t officials do bring down top black drug dealers, black people pull the “race” card. The dealer pulls out the “set up” card. Which does nothing but provide the drug dealer with support, protection, and sympathy for the dealer. Oh God, then someone will pull out the “slavery” hat.
A rapper from Wu-Tang (I think) stated on a program called “Hip Hop and Crack Cocaine” or something like that that during a specific period of time, there was over a million dollars being made in his hood. Another drug dealer said that he and his fellow dealers made hundreds of thousand in a week. Do those situations spell P-O-V-E-R-T-Y? How about P-O-O-R? Yet there’s violence among rich ass yet poor dealers. There’s no such as rich and poor having the same neaning. The violence is a part of their mentality. Doesn’t really matter how much money they have because they’re not putting it to good use anyway. Gunning down the competition for turf that they don’t even own is what boils their adrenaline. Gets ’em hyped and amped up. There’s alot of things about them that are poor: speech, appearance, posture, etc. But its not their income, thats for sure.
Yes, its true that there are corrupt gov’t officials. DEA/CIA and other agencies. But black males who deal drugs consider these carriers as their personal “connect” so obviously they don’t see it as a problem that other countries/nationalities and gov’t are involved in the cocaine business. Any kind of big business operates this way.
These drug dealers must ask themselves questions. Its up to them to look in the mirror. I know they’re not waiting for someone, anyone to do it for ’em.
Great article! Sad truth is, black folks will be in an economic tailspin for decades to come. And the problem is Us. Black males hate each other, our wealthy blacks don’t give back enough to make a difference, jobs are Not coming back especially livable wage jobs, the new world global economy has No sympathy for those left behind. So we’ll continue to March, rise fists, sing we shall overcome, and not a damn thing will change.
FROM this point forward when we discuss crime and drugs in the inner cities we have to mention the U.S government involvement in the drug trade.
OUR government is up to its neck in the cocaine business and are direct partners with the MEXICAN CARTELS.
OUR government also control the OPIUM business with the occupation of AFGHANISTAN which produces 90% of the worlds OPIUM.
IT is also known that the major U.S banks have been caught laundering the cartels drug money HSBC;WELLS FARGO and WACOVIA just to name a few.
SO from this point forward lets not discuss black crime and drugs without naming all the responsible parties and allowing ourselves to take all the blame.
