The Myth of America…Done

(ThyBlackMan.com) For years, I have wondered if things would change in America. Blacks were outraged over the covert racism that plagued their everyday existence while whites were tricked to believe that it did not exist. Both were tricked by the wealthy because their pockets were laced with producing products that brought forth a greater level of division. But every since the people took the streets to protest in Egypt things have looked a bit different for the masses.

Today, I awake to see people taking to the street for two different reasons; Joe  Paterno and the Occupy Movement.  The students of Penn State are turning over vans in protest but there is lack of police presence but those in the OccupyCAL movement are beaten by the campus police.

As, I ruminate upon James Baldwin’s reflections about America, I am drawn to a place that he refers to as “rich confusion.” Have we grown so detached from the human decency that we would make light of the demoralizing molestation of children? The students at Penn State are young, college students but there is still a level of humanity that must be carved out of one’s own heart. Then to come and bring rioted geared up policeman to a peaceful demonstration is an all out display of lunacy.

Baldwin’s critique of America is always dead on correct. He speaks from a place of love and concern, which gives him a certain perspective that is far different from the normal critique. He writes,
“There is an illusion about America, a myth about America to which we are clinging which has nothing to do with the lives we lead and I don’t believe that anybody in this country who has really thought about it or really almost anybody who has been brought up against it–and almost all of us have one way or another–this collision between one’s image of oneself and what one actually is is always very painful and there are two things you can do about it, you can meet the collision head-on and try and become what you really are or you can retreat and try to remain what you thought you were, which is a fantasy, in which you will certainly perish. (Nobody Knows My Name)
This is a proverbial cry that cements the call to help “the least of these.” What is happening in America is that Americans are starting to realize who they are and what they can do. The Occupy Movement is shattering the concept of racism- at a slow pace- with a call for systemic change.  People are hurting and have reached the max of their threshold of pain and tolerance. America as we know it will never be the same and if so, we are looking at the beginning of mass incarceration levied by the government for treason or public disruption-which would then cause a total outrage of the citizenry. The only answer is REVOLUTION…..  The Myth of America is over, Americans have awakened.
