(ThyBlackMan.com) A Black teen killed a white teen with a knife at a high school sporting event.
For too many Americans, that’s all that matters. The events that immediately precipitated the violent death don’t matter. Neither does the alleged history between the victim, the victim’s twin brother, and the boy who is accused of the killing. The fact that two families’ lives will never be the same doesn’t matter. And, in a real sense, even the names of the young men who are at the center of this tragedy don’t matter.
The only thing that matters for most Americans is that the young suspect is Black and the boy who was killed was white. That is the uncomfortable truth — a truth that is being played out in hundreds of thousands of comments on social media and in news links. White Americans often ask Black Americans, “Why is it always about race?” This incident is a concrete answer to that phony rhetorical question.
It’s always “about race” because it’s always been about race in America. This is not to say that every time an unpleasant interracial event occurs it’s only about race. I’m saying that if Black people and white people are involved, race is either the subtext, the pretext, or the actual text.
This story is, in microcosmic form, our national story. One does not have to be an acolyte of Critical Race Theory to understand the role that race has played — and continues to play — in our history and in our daily lives. That is why this story will never simply be about “two kids” who should be looking forward to the summer.
The 17-year-old young man who is accused of committing this crime is named Karmelo Anthony. He is being held on a $1 million bond. His attorneys are attempting to get that amount reduced and are asking the public not to rush to judgment. The latter request has failed; we’ll see about the former.
As we have witnessed countless times, little things matter in big cases. While I haven’t seen nearly all the thousands of articles that have saturated the news, it’s safe to say that the vast majority of them show Anthony’s mugshot as opposed to more neutral photos (e.g., him participating in sports). The fact that he is an honors student is an afterthought.
The victim, also 17, was named Austin Metcalf. Like Anthony, Metcalf was an athlete. Unlike Anthony, we have seen multiple images of him smiling, dressed in athletic gear, or spending time with family and friends. While the sharp contrast in the types of pictures that are shown of the victim as opposed to an alleged perpetrator makes sense to most people, research has shown that Black victims of violent crime are usually depicted negatively in the media. At the same time, white perpetrators of crime generally are depicted positively.
Though initial reports suggested that this was a random encounter between two students who didn’t know each other, later reports have stated that there is a troubling history between Metcalf, his twin brother Hunter, and Anthony. There are even allegations that at least one of the Metcalf brothers had previously called Anthony the “N-word.”
Further, it is now coming to light that, before the stabbing, Metcalf attempted to physically remove Anthony from his (i.e., Metcalf’s) team tent. According to witnesses, Anthony warned Metcalf about “putting his hands on (Anthony).” Metcalf, according to witnesses, did not heed that warning. At that point, Anthony is alleged to have retrieved a knife and fatally stabbed Metcalf.
We should wait for the trial to learn all the relevant facts regarding this case before drawing a conclusion. But we won’t. That did not happen with Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman. It did not happen with George Floyd and Derek Chauvin. It did not happen with Jordan Neely and Daniel Penny. It literally never happens in these cases.
The reason is simple. Even when race is not at the center of these issues, it is at the heart. In other words, when facts are competing with the heart, the heart nearly always wins.
Don’t believe me? Consider a counter-factual: Suppose that Karmelo Anthony was white and Austin Metcalf was Black. Metcalf would have been hailed as another Kyle Rittenhouse or Daniel Penny — a “hero” who was protecting others. We all know that the narrative would have literally been written differently.
Ready for the really bad news? Things are only going to get worse as the president and his allies are working assiduously to dismantle the exceedingly timid initiatives, collectively known as “DEI,” that often are designed to foster racial reconciliation.
The challenge is that there cannot be such reconciliation without recognition of truth. And truth is a casualty of the attempt to impose “alternative facts” on our collective memory. Those “alternative facts” are a frontal assault on our lived experience.
The only way out is through. And the only way through is by clinging to the truth, no matter how painful it is.

Of course, it will always be about race, ethnicity, gender and cultural background. America as always been divided and it will continue to be divided because America is a country that was created based on the Genocide of Native American Indians and the enslavement of millions of African men, women and children to whom today we refer to as African Americans.
America was built on the notion of white supremacy and on the sweat and life of black slaves who built these countries and got nothing in return but discrimination, linching, bias, prejudice and racism. Therefore, today we are now face with the dilema of hatred and fear within all the different races in America but more based on those who control images control the minds of people and the white men have ensure to control every aspect of what we see, hear, do and believe in America.
The white men and white women in America are the most evil and dangerous people in the world as they have the abilit to control everything, to make laws that benefit them and to make themselves as either Heroes or Victims; while making the black men of America look like the guilty one. We know that as of 2025, there is a war between racist white men, hispanic, Asians, Jews, and middee eatern against the black men and women of America and it will never stop until African Americans become like hamas and or Hesbollah and seek revenge and retribution against racist America for the 400 years of slaver, oppression, lynching and Jim Crow segregation laws.
I am glad that our beloved black boy defended himself against this Neanderthal demonic cave dweller and his Mzungu white racist brother who attempted to assauglt oru young black boy. Our Young black brother Anthony defended himself against the onslaught of discrimination, abuse, racisms and the possibility of been Lynch inside that tent by all the white team members. Indeed, No black men in America should bend the knee or surrender to the whitte men. We should fight these demonic pale skin demons to the end and or die trying.
Remember that the white men and white women of America are infected with the disease of madness, insanity, insecurity, fear and the shortcoming of having small private parts and for that reason they hate the black men and envy the black women because we are the original people of the world that brought life to the entire world. It is time for racist america to respect black men, women and LGBT; But more so it is time for black people to fight back and not take anything for granted when dealing with these racist white men with their small penises.
All African Americans, Afro-Caribbean, Afr0-Latinos must unite and be prepared to fight these racist people by any means necessary with what every weapon we have available at our disposal. Likewise, all African Americans must excercise their second ammendment rights by legally purchasing guns, rifles, shotguns, ammunitins, body armored, kevlar helments and be ready to fight these racist white bastards and corrupt police officers who falsify reports, plants guns and drugs on inncoent black american citizen. We must be ready to fight them to the death or die trying.
Additonallly, all black men, women, LGBT must support NFAC ” Not fucking Around Coalition” and we must all join NAAGA ” National AFrican American Gun Association” we must support black businessess, bank in black owned banks and send our children to black private schoold and HBCU’S in order to create a black wall street nationwide and protect ourselves from the racist white men and his supporters. We must do everything in our power to stay ahead and wind every battle against whtie people.
Good job Anthony. You defended yourself and you did not become a victim like George Floyd, Tamir Rice and many more black men and boys who lost their life to a white men and or racist police officer.
Never again will any black men in America allow a white men to choke a fellow black men anywhere in America. Because we wiill intervene and do everything in our power to stop all and any racist white men with small penis or white women with no Buttocks or with plastic Buttocks.
Till death black America and be ready to shed blood to protect our black community.
To: Diane, of course you are with “craks”! You “don’t think this is a race matter” and you “want to go back to the 60’s”! Reality check, it’s never going to happen, you can’t turn back time. The era of “the good old boys” and “white is right” are gone. Overt racism being promulgated by people in authority will not be accepted. You and “craks” will be a minority racial demographic in the very near future, get used to it! You are quick to label the young man who defended himself as the “murder” (it’s actually spelt murderer), without having all the facts. The attitude of “craka” and yourself is exactly what the writer of the article is highlighting.
To: Craka , you identify as a “craka” and your deficiency in diction and analysis confirms the fact. You deem the young man’s presence in the tent as “looking for trouble”, I guess he forgot “his place” per your belief as to who “belongs ‘ and who does not. So, the aggressor was justified in putting his hands on him, and he should not defend himself! Really dude?!
What we know for sure is that yes, this is a very sad story, and the lives of two families will forever be changed. What we don’t know is what really happened because none of us were there. It’s not fair at all for us to speculate or theorize what happened. The article, which is very well written, brings to light an important fact, that “Black victims of violent crime are usually depicted negatively in the media. At the same time, white perpetrators of crime generally are depicted positively”. Why is that? And even if race played a part in this tragedy, when is it going to end? We have got to do better. Until race is eradicated, and I pray it will be, we will never get along as a people, a people of so many different cultures, experiences, and skin shades….just imagine what we can learn from each other! Sending prayers to both families.
This is a very sad story ! I pray for peace and strength for both family . I don’t know if he was being bullied by the twins and he just got feed up but either way that wasn’t the answer. Two families will be forever without their love one, such a sad situation.
YOU are the media. YOU make it about race. YOU are responsible for the division in this country. STOP IT, please.
I think it matters most how the media reports the stories every time the case involves the race of those involved. The way the news is written usually says more about the writer than the victim or the perpetrator. I will wait for the court to decide before I make any decision as to guilt but I have questions. Why does a 17 year old boy carry a knife? Why was he in the wrong tent, accident or looking for trouble? Why did the victim think it was his responsibility to kick him out? Did these boys some history?
The important thing is that the lives of both families is forever changed and will never be the same. Let’s all keep the negativity out of this tragedy and wait for the truth to play out.
I am with cracks! Why is a 17 year old going to the school with a knife! don’t think this is a race matter! Why are people sending him a load of money? I want to go back to the 60’s. Send it to somebody that needs it, you aren’t any better that the murder!
I cant guess the writers race (sarcasm). So who shows up to a track meet with a knife? Who takes a knife into another teams tent and uses it when asked to leave? He went looking for trouble and found it. WTF was he doing in the other teams tent?
