Stephen Curry, best on the planet?

(ThyBlackMan.com) After Stephen Curry dethroned King James in the NBA finals, a cross country discussion began about Steph replacing Lebron as the best player on the planet. In a news conference, directly after the game, Lebron, in his usual cavalier persona, informed every viewer that he, and he alone, is the best player on earth.

Well, this writer begs to differ. For starters, let’s deal with shooting percentages verses volume of shot. Normally, the more shots a player attempts, his percentage descends. With King Steph it’s the opposite. On an average game night, he attempts more shots than Larry Bird, Reggie Miller, and Ray Allen. However, Stephen Curry makes the baskets at a higher percentage than any of the aforementioned sharp shooting trio.

In addition, his worst three-point shooting annual percentage is still better than Reggie Miller’s and Ray Allen’s best three point annual percentage. And, truth be told, when it comes to percentage shooting, Larry Bird doesn’t even belong in that conversation. Why? Stephen-Curry-2015-mvp-champianBecause he had multiple seasons whereas he shot less that 30% from three-point land.

And, Stephen Curry is also deadly because he is the point guard; therefore, the ball is almost always in his hand. He has a quick draw and shoot like an athletic Doc Holiday. If you try to defend him at the three point arc, he’ll either leave you in the dust or embarrass you with a handle that was tricky enough to trip up the normally savvy Chris Paul.

Plus, outside of averaging 32 points and six assists, he also creates havoc on the floor when he moves about without the ball, screening big men which creates mismatches for his teammates.

On the other side of the coin, Lebron needs the ball in his hand to be effective. Running and bouncing off screens doesn’t create as much havoc; that is, unless he’s sprinting full tilt toward the basket. At age 30, Lebron is already past his athletic prime. And the older he gets, the less explosive he will be. His game is built upon athleticism.

Steph’s career, however, with the exception of a freak injury, should last longer than that of Lebron. I mean, even after his explosion is gone, he’ll turn into a spot up shooter like Bird, Miller, and/or Allen. Nevertheless, basketball is a team sport. Therefore, unless Lebron can single-handedly win a championship, he need to leave that the best player in the world title to individual competitive sports like golf, swimming, boxing and tennis.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but at the age of 30, Mike was a three-time champion. He was six time champion at 35. That being said, Lebron would have to win four of the next five championships to be like Mike. Jordan is 6-0; Steph is 1-0; and Lebron is 2-4. And, when your losses supersede your win and you’re still singing that best player on the planet song, perhaps your ego is superseding your reality
