Saida Grundy, Boston University Professor is not politically correct, but she’s still correct.

(ThyBlackMan.com) Saida Grundy has started her academic career with a bang. Shortly after being hired by Boston University, the African American Studies professor set the campus on fire with a series of tweets that some found to be offensive, shocking and everything in-between. I don’t get the sense that Dr Grundy expected the public to see these tweets, but in the age of social media, anything you say online could easily be used against you.

According to numerous outlets reporting on the story, Professor Grundy expressed her concerns about white privilege, white supremacy, and the ugly, honest truth about racism in America. In other words, she said the things you can’t say when you are forced to work for white people.

On her personal Twitter account, Dr. Grundy pushed the limits of academic freedom by tweeting that “white masculinity is THE problem for america’s (sic) colleges,” and that white men are a “problem population.”

An overzealous student hunted down the professor’s remarks, and the Fox News witch hunt began. Before the firestorm, the university did the right thing by standing by Professor Grundy’s right to freedom of speech (they say liberals are supposed to believe in this sort of thing).  Perhaps they were hoping that all of this would die down and go away.

But of course, we live in a society that is driven by money, not Democracy and certainly not freedom.  We also live in arguably the most racist industrialized nation on earth. So, once big donors took issue with this “loud mouth black woman who doesn’t know her place,” the university started to cave.   It’s easiest to do the right thing when there is no economic consequence for doing so, but once money enters into the equation, most campuses become dumbed down, weak and hypocritical.

“The University does not condone racism or bigotry in any form and we are deeply saddened when anyone makes such offensive statements,” said Colin Riley, the university’s spokesman.

Riley’s statement is the kind of thing that universities say when rich people call up the campus president and threaten to stop giving them money.  Universities also start to look ridiculously anti-intellectual when protecting the billions being earned from overworked, unpaid college athletes with virtually no labor rights.

When doing his complete 180 on Boston University’s position on Dr Grundy, Riley was speaking to Fox News, the media outlet that is known for saying some of the most vile, wretched things imaginable about black people. Remember when Bill O’Reilly joked about lynching Michelle Obama a few years ago? Fox News is the kind of pseudo-media outlet that big universities cave-in to when they start feeling the heat from angry bigots. Racist whites don’t care that Fox News is known for inciting hatred or promoting falsehoods. They only know that the network has lots of money and gets over two million viewers each night. That scares people, and Bill O’Reilly knows it.

I’ve never met Saida, but I know her father well. Chester Grundy was one of my most esteemed and respected mentors during college, and the kind of black man that every black child in America should have in the home. He raised Saida with both the gift and the curse of having a full understanding of black history, not the watered-down lies and White Supremacist propaganda being taught in our public schools.   In other words, it’s like having both Martin Luther King and Malcolm X in your living room.

It’s difficult to have a father like Chester and not grow up angry about what’s been done to every black man, woman and child over the last 400 years. The anger is clearly justified, and those who understand history often find themselves frustrated by the millions of people who’ve been so miseducated that they believe there’s nothing to be upset about. Passivity has been so beaten into the brains of black people that when powerful White Americans tell us to sit down and shut up, we respond like Pavlov’s dog and do exactly what we are told.

Let’s break down this situation at Boston University for a second, shall we?

Here we have a group of white males at Fox News using the power of their network to agitate mostly white male donors to the point that they pressure another white male (the university spokesman) to violate the university’s academic integrity by publicly humiliating a highly-qualified black female professor who said something that white men don’t want to hear.

So, by striking back at Saida’s statement that white males are the problem, her detractors are effectively proving to us that white men actually ARE the problem. It’s kind of like someone saying, “Boyce, you’re too violent,” and my responding by punching them in the face.   Or perhaps we can compare it to the way our white supremacist judicial system, along with racist media outlets like Fox News, portrayed Trayvon Martin as a violent thug, when it is George Zimmerman who now has more mugshots than most of us can count.

This kind of unfair pressure for simply speaking out against well-documented and heinous injustice against black people in America is a direct product of the very same systematic racism that Saida is referring to. The bottom line is that Saida’s attackers can’t prove her wrong, and the more they prove her right, the more they want to drag her academic corpse out into the street.

Saida’s anger at those who maintain white supremacy and systematic racism is no different from a rape victim’s irritation with those who support rape culture.   It can be compared to the way holocaust survivors feel about Nazi sympathizers. Our pain is real, and there’s nothing that Dr Grundy said that millions of other conscientiously-educated black people haven’t said around the dinner table. The only difference is that, because of the White Supremacy and racial bullying (similar to the kind that Dr Grundy is experiencing right now) we are trained at an early age to remain silent about our pain, as if it doesn’t really matter.

This kind of political savagery is nothing new. White males have done this to black people since we arrived on slave ships. On the plantation, outspoken blacks were often punished in front of everyone to remind the other slaves to stay in line. So, I can assure you that there are black scholars watching Saida’s reputation being assaulted, who will now be far more hesitant to use their own voices to defend her. Instead, many of them will either mumble their support in private or join with the powerful racists who want to see her exterminated.

But again, Saida Grundy understands racism and white supremacy better than most, so I’m sure she saw this coming.

Saida’s father likely taught her about how black babies were once used as alligator bait. He showed her pictures of black men being SaidaGrundy-2015lynched, while white males and their families enjoyed picnics with their children in the background. He might have told her about carnival games like “Hit the Coon,” where white males would bring their families to throw hard baseballs at the heads of black people. In fact, if I were to sit and inventory the list of human rights violations that white males have committed against black people, I’d be typing for the next 200 years.

The fact is that, the same way these white men are attempting to muffle Saida Grundy into relinquishing her academic freedom at the door, white males have raped, murdered, lynched, castrated, and burned alive countless black people who’ve had the courage to speak out against white supremacy in an authentic way. This kind of vicious, savage reaction to Dr Grundy is as typical and predictable as a child molester at a daycare center.

Whether they know it or not, the hiring of Saida Grundy is a test for Boston University and it might very likely be a test they will not pass. Most American universities, all of whom claim to be seeking qualified black professors, actually don’t give a damn about meaningful diversity. Instead, they are actually seeking the kind of assimilation that effectively neutralizes the ability of strong black scholars to make relevant contributions to the campus environment.   That’s why many of us stopped trying to teach at places like BU a long time ago: Being a black scholar at a university that promotes and supports white supremacy is like a pastor trying to serve God at a church that worships the devil.

Dr. Grundy’s words might have ruffled a few feathers, but the public reaction to her remarks is very telling, like pouring grease on a fire to show that it burns. Whether it was the government’s decision to murder Dr Martin Luther King, the angry whites who burned down Black Wall Street, or the decision by white men to tie Malcolm X’s father to the railroad tracks, racist lynch mobs are real, and white males are usually the ones behind them.

That’s just a fact. You can’t dispute it. You can only argue that not every white male wishes to be a deliberate enemy of racial equality, a point with which most of us can agree.

The descendants of the evil whites who systematically oppressed our parents and grandparents are the same people who run our universities, corporations, prisons, schools and media outlets, protecting intergenerational power that sits on a pile of wealth that was extracted from the African American community during slavery, Jim Crow and the most recent era of mass incarceration. Those who fail to understand these systems are a huge part of the problem, and those who inadvertently support the structure of white supremacist institutions end up standing on the necks of black people because they don’t even pay attention to where their ancestors trained them to put their economic and political feet.

Saida Grundy might be the best thing to happen to Boston University in a very long time.  Her weighty commentary is an opportunity for her campus to investigate the structure of the long-held cultural and socio-political failings that built the campus in which she resides.   It is a chance for students to ask, “Why don’t we have very many tenured African American professors outside of African American studies?” or “Why were there almost no black people sitting at the table when this university was founded?” But rather than investigating the message, these Fox News mobs are designed to kill the messenger. They would rather eliminate Dr Grundy than try to understand her.

Black scholars should be speaking out on Dr Grundy’s behalf, rather than shuttering in the shadows, hoping that nothing like this happens to them.

White liberals should speak on behalf of Professor Grundy’s right to free expression.

True academics should stand up to support her academic freedom.

Her campus should be defending Saida Grundy as one of their own, rather than allowing Fox News to smoke her out like a black teen in the 19th century who’s been accused of looking at a white woman.

Black men should speak up in protection of the strong black women who hold our communities together while white males seek to incarcerate us, gun us down and keep us unemployed.

As much as I’d like to see free-thinking Americans come to Saida Grundy’s defense, I doubt that is going to happen. Many Americans are either too fearful or too miseducated to understand exactly what’s happening here.

Most universities in this country tend to kill the careers of their greatest intellectual prophets. But then again, that’s the American way.

  3. Truth says:

Why do blacks always act as if they are as deserving of food, clean water, and shelter as human beings are? Am I missing something here? You’d think that they actually believed themselves to be fully evolved, fully functioning human beings, as if they didn’t know any better.

What a racist twat! You don’t see white people looting, burning our neighborhoods, flipping over cars etc. You see blacks AKA Niggers stealing, raping, robbing everyday.

Ms. Grundy says the “white man” is evil, blah blah blah… And yet is working for whitey just the same. In my culture, she’s called a squaw – a woman who sleeps with the enemy while pretending to hate them. It’s the worst insult that can be hurled at a Native woman because it means she’s a willing co-conspirator. A traitor to her people. And that’s what Ms. Grundy is. She can spew all the pseudo-intellectual garbage she likes, but it doesn’t change what she is.

  6. Don White says:

Boston U is the same dump that gave Mr I Habs A Dram speech (Michael Looter Kong) a PhD only to later find that he PLAGIARIZED part of the dissertation. Did they pull the degree? Naaaaah. Kong was black. He was SPECIAL. So, apparently, is this spiteful, kinky-haired nitwit.

Boston U coddles knee-grows, lets them run wild and treats them all like special little snow flakes. That’s terrific. Let this idiot teach her “Afro Studies” (whatever that is) and develop hundreds or thousands of more black losers who will fail to contribute anything to human society. We need this federal welfare structure to crumble and producing idiotic, racist black Affirmative Action failures who will destroy everything they touch is a great way to do it.

Boston has always been Ground Zero for abolitionists, race hustlers and knee-grow apologists. Nothing good comes out of there. Keep up the good work, BU!

  7. Truth says:

I will never understand why blacks think they have a right to demand the same human rights and privileges as human beings are afforded.
Are they actually fooled at this point by political correctness that they actually believe that they are suddenly now fully evolved, fully functioning human beings, despite every single aspect of their existence clearly proving otherwise?

Are you so quick to defend her now? She obviously has issues with rape victims too. I think she just has issues.

Boston University Professor Saida Grundy’s tweets deriding white men are her business, according to the school. (Boston University)

Boston University, which has already condemned the racist Tweets of an incoming faculty member, has now been sent an outrageous Facebook exchange in which a poster who identifies herself as the controversial sociology professor mercilessly ridicules a white rape victim.

Saida Grundy, a newly hired professor at Boston University who recently said she regrets tweeting that white males are a “problem population,” and other racially charged comments, is now accused of Facebook posts in which she appeared to taunt a white rape victim. That victim, Meghan Chamberlin, told FoxNews.com that the posts, an a February public chat, felt “like a kick in the stomach.”

“go cry somewhere. since that’s what you do.”

    – Facebook poster identified as Sai Grundy, speaking to rape victim

The woman who identified herself as Grundy posted the comments after Chamberlin took issue with a controversial article on race that the Facebook thread had linked to.

“I LITERALLY cry and lose sleep over this,” Chamberlin wrote, adding she had been raped as a child and felt that: “what this article did was tell me that I’m not aloud (sic) to ask for help… Because I am a WHITE woman… So when I read this article… you do understand what that does to me, right? It kills me…”

The woman, who identified herself as Sai Grundy and uses the same photo the professor uses on tweets she acknowledged last week, responded by making fun of the victim’s crying.

This Facebook exchange, in which a poster who identified herself as Saida Grundy berates a rape victim, was sent to Boston University officials by friends of the victim.

“’I literally cry’…. While we literally die,” she said before adding, “try this article. A white woman explaining this issue to other white women… who manages NOT to cry while doing it!”

Chamberlin, the rape survivor, responded: “No really. I got it. You can take your claws out, thanks.”

    To which Grundy exploded:

“^^THIS IS THE S**T I AM TALKING ABOUT. WHY DO YOU GET TO PLAY THE VICTIM EVERY TIME PEOPLE OF COLOR AND OUR ALLIES WANT TO POINT OUT RACISM. my CLAWS?? Do you see how you just took an issue that WASNT about you, MADE it about you, and NOW want to play the victim when I take the time to explain to you some s**t that is literally $82,000 below my pay grade? And then you promote your #whitegirltears like that’s some badge you get to wear… YOU BENEFIT FROM RACISM. WE’RE EXPLAINING THAT TO YOU and you’re vilifying my act of intellectual altruism by saying i stuck my “claws” into you?”

Chamberlin responded by trying to leave the discussion. “I am choosing to “exit” this conversation,” she wrote.

But Grundy posted again, finishing with: “go cry somewhere. since that’s what you do.”

    Chamberlin responded: “Will do.”

Grundy then responded to others: “am I mocking her tears or am I saying that her tears are meaningless displays of emotions because they don’t reflect at ALL an intention to understand the issue from the prospective (sic) of women of color or queer women.”

She added, “my name is *Sai*, but you can call me Dr. Grundy.”

The exchange was taken down from Facebook late Wednesday, just hours after FoxNews.com asked Frank William Miller Junior, on whose Facebook page the posts appeared, what he thought of Grundy’s comments.

Grundy did not return an email or a phone call from FoxNews.com about her posts on Thursday morning; within hours of FoxNews.com reaching out, her Facebook page was taken down. Before the deletion, FoxNews.com took a screenshot of her page which shows the exact same name and twitter article as appears in the screenshots.

FoxNews.com talked separately with three different people who also posted comments on that Facebook thread. FoxNews.com was tipped off to the existence of the thread by one of the three posters. Two of the participants in the thread had taken screenshots, which they shared with FoxNews.com.

Chamberlin told FoxNews.com she was shaken by the online run-in.

“What that day did was send me back years,” she said. “I felt like I was being “shhhh’d” again… I didn’t know Dr. Grundy was a professor or a doctor until she stated so… when I read that, the kick in the gut felt deeper,” she said.

The woman who alerted FoxNews.com to the Facebook thread said she did so even though she was friends with the original poster (and did not know Chamberlin personally) because she felt no rape survivor should have to go through what happened.

“Self-important and condescending academics are nothing unusual, but mocking a traumatized rape victim crosses a line,” she said.

Another woman involved in the thread told FoxNews.com that she alerted Boston University officials about the Facebook exchange on Thursday, sending them an email with screenshots she took.

“When regarding her continued employment with Boston University, I hope the magnitude of her desensitized ability to have no compassion for a rape victim is considered,” she said in a letter to school officials.

Grundy, an incoming assistant professor of sociology and African-American studies at the school, previously tweeted that “white masculinity is THE problem for america’s (sic) colleges,” white men are a “problem population,” and that she tries to avoid shopping at white-owned businesses. Last week, after several alumni complaints, Boston University president Robert Brown condemned the racist tweets.

“We are disappointed and concerned by statements that reduce individuals to stereotypes on the basis of a broad category such as sex, race, or ethnicity,” Brown wrote in an email blast to the “Boston University community.” “I believe Dr. Grundy’s remarks fit this characterization,” he said in a statement.

That prompted Grundy, who has not returned repeated requests for comment, to release a statement in which she said the tweets were the result of “personal passion” surrounding unspecified “events we now witness with regularity in our nation.”

“I regret that my personal passion about issues surrounding these events led me to speak about them indelicately,” Grundy said. “I deprived them of the nuance and complexity that such subjects always deserve.”

Boston University said after the tweets no action will be taken against Grundy. The university did not respond to a request for comment on whether any action would be taken against Grundy in light of the Facebook comments.

    Brotha Watkins–

While I agree with what you said about Dr. Grundy, but look at the picture here. Who is Dr. Grundy using her talents to contribute towards? You got it right, WHITE PEOPLE!! She’s at Boston U. for goodness sakes. Perhaps she should take that energy and go teach BLACK people at one of the nation’s HBCUs. Wouldn’t that be putting your money where your mouth is, Dr. Watkins?

Dr. Grundy hasn’t understood what her place is. You can’t go work for white people and not advance their agenda. She will get a reality check very soon here.

I don’t understand why these black intellectuals refuse to use their talents to teach black people then complain when the system places their boots firmly on their necks.

Maybe she’s taking a page from your book Dr. Watkins. She’ll soon be complaining about being ostracized and sabotaged at Boston U. She needs to realize that you can’t work for the system then buck it at the same time.

To Dr. Grundy: Go teach some black students you’ll have more impact there.

This is coming from a black man.

  12. Hershel says:

This website is a problem. The writing is horrible, majority of the content is basically “fuck whitey”, and it’s full of misinformation. You talk so much about how racist white people are, but obviously don’t realize that these unintelligent posts full of ignorant opinions could be construed as racist by whites. That’s becausethey are racist. If a white website went up talking about what a problem blacks are, that would not be ok. But it’s ok for you to do it? You sir are an ignorant racist piece of shit, and your methods of trying to bring separation to blacks and whites are pathetic. Perhaps you should do your research before you post an article. Some of the FACTS and stats that people have posted in the comments section are far more useful and interesting than your entire post, “DR” HAH!

  13. Independent_Systems says:

Boy you liberals and white apologists are too much. Blacks have scholarships DESIGNED for STEM careers yet their are millions of dollars unclaimed and nothing to show for it (on the scale of investment anyway)Her comments are erratic and misguided telling us nothing that we already know. Except that slavery is a white thing..sure its not like our ancestors didn’t sell us *U.N Benin* cough* cough* or muslims, jews and the rest of humanity didn’t…oh wait they did enslave?

Even this article is bizarre “together while white males seek to incarcerate us, gun us down and keep us unemployed”

Really so the white male police and civilian population as a whole is plotting this? If so then its a paradox because we never would be able to ascend to the area we are right now. Our ancestors + civil rights would be powerless against even a mere 30% of hostile whites back in the ’40’s.

Her comments would be more suited if they were more specific and less blanketed to the white race vs the black race.

  14. Travis says:

Thank you for the thought provoking article. This is a well written article reminding people of the struggles/horrors minorities faced and still face today in this country, to put it lightly. I am a white male and I will never know, that hardship living here in the US. As you point out Dr. Grundy is highly learned on the history of slavery and African American oppression in America. I can sympathize and support her support of wanting to buy from black owed businesses, and finding it hard to do so. I should probably work to do the same. ‘White males being the problem population’, somewhat true when you think that institutions (schools, police, government, churches, etc…) will protect their own interests of itself and those who hold the power. Something I would expect you and Dr. Grundy have had the benefit of being part of the insulated culture of Universities.

However, many of her comments appear to show a level of ignorance on slavery and oppression outside of this country. Opinion is one thing, Europeans/ whites have been behind some really bad things over the centuries but slavery is not a white male construct, and not just “*YALL* thing,”. As we all know, it has been around for thousands of years. Other cultures (Pre and Post Islamic Middle East, Egyptian, as examples) have practiced multi-generational slavery, and it was a status. It is my understanding the even the Koran, has rules of slavery. Additionally, while a very small minority, there had been multiple examples of African Americans who had a vested interest in slavery itself. Whether it was from a standpoint of self-preservation, greed,or a way to emancipate other slaves, I could not say. To name a few: 1st Louisiana Native Guard (CSA), Nat Butler, and John Carruthers Stanly. The latter himself an emancipated slave who owned other slaves, but when he ran into financial trouble, sold them. Additionally Dr. Grundy would do well to refresh her memory on the history of slavery in Africa itself where peoples are enslaved not based on the color of their skin but what group they belong to; add to that, Niger, Mauritania, Ghana, have made slavery a crime only in the past 30 years, to my knowledge these are not countries dominated by white men.

    Thank you.

  15. Susan Pugh says:

As the mother of 4 multiracial children, I do not have the luxury of wallowing in ‘black vs. white’ polarizing idiocy. I don’t want my children to hate any part of themselves. This person whom BU has hired is not someone to whom I would afford the right of educating my children. Her statements that ‘slavery’ is a ‘white thing’ displays ignorance and prejudice. There are many more well-educated, non-racist professors of color who would do a much better job, in my opinion, of communicating the history of The Black Struggle in America. Rather than offer courses in ‘African American Studies,” I would prefer that U.S. History and other courses reflect the past realities of all groups that comprise this Great Nation. I know what some of you are thinking…..and you’re right. I did not have to wait for a Black President to win an election before I would stand and pledge allegiance at a school play, or sing the National Anthem at a ball game. I listen to conservative, liberal, and international news coverage. I look for the grain of truth in the words of those I consider to be a threat to me and mine. In short, I’m this woman’s worst nightmare….a student who thinks for herself. I’m not so easily ‘indoctrinated.’ I hope that one day, my children will have access to instructors who have not succombed to such flawed reasoning as has this bigot.

  16. John Farb says:

    White males are the problem?
Last year, more than 13000 white women were raped by black males.
In the past 30 years, more than 300,000 blacks have been murdered by blacks.
In the same time period, 3000 blacks were killed by whites.
Ms. Grundy should at the very least be required to attend diversity training to be detoxed for her Black Liberation Theory education.

  17. Jim Miller says:

Whats idiotic is to compare the response to her with those times white ass(*^&^ murdered or mutilated a black man. THATS idiotic Ill bet you don’t even know of a black man who was mutilated by a white person. maybe don’t even know one who was killed by a white person. give me a break own your life stop blaming others

  18. Jim Miller says:

yes I knew I would get that. That’s what happens when you don’t have a legitimate argument

  19. Jim Miller says:

Sadia is a racist and the act of that judgmental statement, although her right, reflects this. The college standing up to freedom of speech is to be commended but to think that their position may have changed due to wealthy contributors threatening to leave was a racist decision is quite the assumption. The trend today of assuming racism is behind every decision affecting a black person must begin to be challenged by facts. Y3s it is still there but in no way is it even marginally close to where it has been. When will black people stop acting like and claiming the status of “victims”. If these roles were reversed somewhat and Sadia was white and made a comment about blacks you would be crying out for her dismissal. You cannot have it both ways. Take responsibility, Pull your pants up, stop embracing the prison culture with drawers down off your waist, music filled with hate and murder, facebook celebrations when a cop is murdered and stop thinking everyone white person is out to get you (most are not) and maybe white people will stop thinking black people are all criminals.
