Like Love Haha Wow Sad Angry

(ThyBlackMan.com) A few months ago the documentary “Dark Girls” was aired on The Own Network. From a journalistic point of view this may be old news, but it really isn’t since the subject matter of “Dark Girls” has been a hot topic for years.

It somehow amazes me that in 2013 the subject of color complexion is still a major source of discomfort to some folks. Now I am not shocked or naïve to the fact that race is still a factor in many situations. However, to know this is still an issue within the African American community saddens me.

The documentary “Dark Girls” delves deeply into the attitudes and prejudices involving skin color outside and within the African American community. This film is also poignant because we hear the recorded accounts of women that have personally experienced being treated negatively simply because of the color of their skin. Dark Girls  (—–

The light skinned vs. dark skinned issue has been a heavy one within our community for years. How about hundreds of years to be exact. As I read the numerous articles and comments on “Dark Girls” one thing came to mind, the Infamous Willie Lynch Letter. The name and idea of Willie Lynch continued to pop up in my head.dark-girls-documentary-own-network

Some of you may be familiar with Willie Lynch and some of you may not. The British slave owner Willie Lynch delivered a speech in 1712. This was not an ordinary speech, but one that taught methods on keeping slaves under control. Even though his speech is over three hundred years old I believe that it still holds ramifications that effect blacks to this day.

One of the methods mentioned in The Willie Lynch Letter instructs pitting the darker skinned black against the lighter one. Lynch states within the letter that blacks will continue to perpetrate these actions, by self-refueling and self-generating this thought of self-hatred for hundreds of years.

After reading the Willie Lynch Letter I realized that we are still doing just those things. We still sling hateful remarks at one another with no concern on how a person may feel. It appears that Willie Lynch’s letter still has some effect on us today and in some cases seems to be a cycle.

So many times blalantly or subtle we are continuously reminded us that light is right. The house slave vs. the field slave and the paper bag test held by black Greek organizations. Even family members have been known to constantly point out that lighter girls are prettier than the darker ones.

This type of thinking was and in some cases still the norm. In the past and even today some mothers are still telling their sons to marry only light skinned women, so as not to have dark babies. This is sad to me and disheartening.

Here is just an excerpt that has been edited to emphasize points and statements in my opinion that are strongly connected to Dark Girls and the experiences and attitudes of the black race.

I have a full proof method for controlling our black slaves. I guarantee every one of you that, if installed correctly, it will control the slaves for at least 300 hundred years. My method is simple. Any member of your family or your overseer can use it. I have outlined a number of differences among the slaves.

The Willie Lynch Letter

The Black slaves after receiving this indoctrination shall carry on and will become self-refueling and self-generating for hundreds of years, maybe thousands.

You must use the dark skin slaves vs. the light skin slaves, and the light skin slaves vs. the dark skin slaves.

I strongly suggest that you read The Willie Lynch Letter in its entirety.

Some have said that The Willie Lynch Letter is a hoax. Well be it hoax or not it seems to have worked and I believe that there is a connection between the Willie Lynch speech and attitudes on being a dark skinned man or woman.

Since shackled, hauled across the oceans and forced into enslavement the black race in America have been stripped physically, mentally and spiritually, with their self-esteem along with it.

It is understandable to have a preference of what type of man or woman you are attracted to, but when others feel the need to destroy one’s self-esteem that takes it to a whole different level.

We must embrace all of our beautiful sisters and take hold of all of the hues within our special rainbow and while we’re at it let’s burn the Willie Lynch mentality and the self-hatred along with it.

…as a man I find women attractive. Doesn’t matter what color they are. Also it seems the Lynch letter is a hoax and recent at that.
…Robert. It seems obama could start ww3 with his dumb shit red line that as of last nights news he was saying he never said. Also the white man has likely been killing for a lot longer than 500 years along with everyone else. The Bible, as I remember, says the meek shall inherit the earth. Possibly, but not any time soon. islam, given its way, will kill you and everyone else who doesn’t submit. You and toomanygrandkids think the Bible is a problem…no. A woman having her head cut off because she was raped is a problem. islam is OUR problem Robert and will continue to be for a good long time. And obama wants to confiscate our guns……….

What Robert said is true especially about white people having a secret weapon. It is their religion. That why in the letter Willie Lynch stated how much they honor the King James version of the Bible. Not sure if “honor” was the actual word but it was something close to it.

Many people have said the same thing as Robert: If you believe in their religion, you will always be a slave. From my understanding, the Bible leaves/puts a person in a comatose-like state of mind. Could be the reason why whites cherish the Bible so much.

  3. ROBERT says:

IF any people can get you to believe that they are divine and in fact represent the living GOD and you do not look like them and are treated as inferiors by them what do you expect have other than a inferiority complex.

WHITE people have a secret weapon to use on us its their religion; they got us to believe their religion and as long as you believe this stuff you will always be their slaves.

IF white CHRISTIANITY had any value it would have changed the murderous nature of the white man; but it hasn’t look at the world we are in .
THE white man hasn’t stop killing in 500 years and now we are waiting for ww3 in JESUS;S name amen!

What doesn’t amaze me but is saddening is how ignorant Negros are.
Also, I’m not shocked that the writer is naïve.
Negro history, what ever the specific area may be, only goes back to the first instance that a white man did the negro bad. It’s strange that any and every problem the Negros have is always historically linked to a white man. LOL!!! Blemishes, pimples, male pattern baldness, menstrual cramps, and toe fungus…..You are all to funny!!!

It’s easy to prove the letter is not a hoax. Where is the letter?
No letter, OK; The speech was given, fine.

So, what you want me to believe is that one man’s speech to a few slave owners in 1712 makes Negros in 2013 prefer light skin over dark skin. Are you crazy, stupid, or both?
I guess the words of white slave owner in 1712 are more powerful than the words of a black reverend in 1963. (For you ignorant Negros, that is Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream speech”…”I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. “
My next post will explain the black-white, light-dark, thing. Maybe!

“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”

Children born out of wedlock, high school drop out rate and unemployment are all sky high and someone feels the need to direct attention to Willie Lynch and Skin Color……….SMDH!

  6. Eleanie says:

If mothers tell their sons to marry light skinned women then that mother is speaking against herself (especially if she’s dark) and other black women, even brown-skinned women.

    This statement is so true.

  7. toomanygrandkids says:

Black people who have a problem with anyone’s shade of color oughtta be ashamed of themselves. Don’t they realize that no one has any authority over skin color. Its the skin you’re born in. Surely, folks can dislike something else about a person. But the thing is bad people come in all shades. There are light-skinned criminals. And not all dark-skinned people are bad. If anyone black has a problem w/ my skin color then I just don’t associate w/ them. Doesn’t matter if they’re dark or light. I don’t enter these “shades of brown” contests. Not happening.

Damn shame how after all these years SOME/MANY BLACK PEOPLE have allowed such pettiness within the black race. I hear/read how folks brag and boost about the variety of shades among black people.

Nobody should wonder why black girls and black boys grow up thinking the way they do when they grow into men and women. If mothers tell their sons to marry light skinned women then that mother is speaking against herself (especially if she’s dark) and other black women, even brown-skinned women. So these ignorant and rude mothers shouldn’t wonder why their own daughters/other female relatives have something against them.

Damn. Whatever happened to “Black Is Beautiful?”
