Dr. Boyce Watkins; Kid Rock, the NAACP and the Confederate Flag: Three Questions I’d Like to Ask…

(ThyBlackMan.com) The NAACP of Detroit has committed what appears to be an incredibly sad act by giving it’s Great Expectations Award to Kid Rock during it’s annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner.  It’s ironic that the  NAACP is giving an award to someone who regularly uses the Confederate   flag during his concerts.  The civil rights supporter in me doesn’t understand the NAACP’s actions, but the Finance Professor in me understands their actions perfectly.

Three questions for the NAACP as they honor one of their greatest heroes, Kid Rock:
__
1) If Kid Rock were not a donor to your organization, would you have given him this award?  Probably not.
__
2) If you were to take a vote among your members in Detroit, would they agree with giving an award to someone who boldly carries around one of the greatest symbols of racism in American history? I don’t think so.
__
3) Would the Jewish Anti-Defamation League give an award to a man who put a swastika on stage during his performance?  I think not.
__
I won’t say another word.  I’ll just let the Detroit NAACP and it’s members mull this one over for a while.  Even the prostitute who works on the corners so she can feed her children is still…in the end….another prostitute.   She can no longer claim to be the virtuous mother that she used to be, and her child may still be disappointed with her in the end.
__
There should be no price placed on your integrity, especially when the disrespect is so incredibly blatant.

  1. Nick McNeal says:

Boyce Watkins has again pushed a button that has some black people wasting time and metal energy over something that will not advance nor regress the state of black people in America. That time and energy could be better spent discussing how black folks can better spend their money, rather then lineing the pockets of big corperations when the black communities never see that money again. Any money spent should turn over the maximum number of times before it goes out of our community forever.

Not to mention he is good friends with another Detroit native Aretha Franklin, they have performed together numerous times and he has honored her. I guess they are in on this together.

Once again Watkins is rushing to judgement. The point of the award is for his contributions, so obviously if he didn’t donate he would not be given an award. What exactly have you done for Detroit? If he is a racist as it seems like you want him to be, then he is a mighty generous one who will go out of his way to help a race he does not like. Not to mention the work he does with OTHER black organizations, but I don’t think you dd your research so I’ll let you look that up. You should try thinking before typing.

  4. Toni says:

If you knew the first thing about Kid Rock, you would know that he’s probably the least prejudice person on the planet. Have you seen his son? He’s black, you know…well, you probably don’t because you appear to be rushing to judgement before you know the facts. Kid Rock is a generous, caring, compassionate man that loves people and you, my fri.end, are a judgmental a#$hole
