(ThyBlackMan.com) Let’s talk about narcissism. It’s something that you probably come into contact with every day and don’t even know it. There are all kinds of people in the world and many of them are so full of themselves that they aren’t even aware of the self-centered things that they do. A narcissist, to make it simple and very understandable, is someone with an inflated sense of self. In fact, being a narcissist is so major that many experts refer to it as a disorder.

You may feel that a narcissist is someone that you can ignore, but if you work with one or worse, are in a relationship with one, the need for you to know how to deal with them is important. There are many studies on narcissist personality disorder (NPD) and there are tactics that you can employ to ensure that you don’t become one of their victims.

Here are ways to spot and deal with a narcissist.

Sense of Entitlement

If the person exhibits behavior that communicates a sense of entitlement, you may be dealing with a narcissist. In the moments when you have to interact with them, make it very clear what your intentions are and let them know how you feel. Although narcissists usually lack the ability to sense the needs of others, that doesn’t mean that you don’t make yours known.

Set Boundaries

It’s not your job to change a narcissist. That will never happen, mostly because they don’t see their behavior as problematic. The best thing that you can do is set boundaries. This is to safeguard yourself from their predictable tendencies. Remember, a person with NPD has no filter and will do what is best for them first; even when in a relationship.

Keep Your Boundaries

This goes hand in hand with the previous tip. Setting boundaries is one thing. Keeping them is something totally different. You have got to keep the boundaries that you set with a narcissist. They already feel that they can do whatever they want, which usually means that they can be demanding, demeaning, belittling, and a bully. Don’t give them the room to get away with anything. This is especially true if you are in a relationship with a narcissist.

Don’t Take Things Personally

When it comes to the way a narcissist deals with others, 9 times out of 10, it’s not personal, it’s just the way they are. But that doesn’t excuse their behavior. There are some narcissists who do interact with people based on superficial things like how they look or how much money they have. In those moments, it can seem personal, but know that the problem is them, not you.

Don’t Let Them Get to You

If there is a narcissist at work that you have to deal with, don’t let them get to you. Their number one goal is to get ahead at any costs. Keep records of your interactions with them because if they can, they will try to twist things and put the fall on you. No matter what they do, don’t let them get to you.

People are different but when it comes to a narcissist you have to know what you are dealing with and act accordingly.
