Lil Wayne and Drake = Success and Notoriety in Hip Hop.

(ThyBlackMan.com) There have been a few successful movements (since the late 90s and early 2000s) in hip hop including the rise of No Limit Records, Bad Boy Records, and now Cash Money. Each one of these movements was considered major points in hip hop history that paralleled the successes of many careers today. In this article, I wanted to write about Lil Wayne and Drake. Never in the history of hip-hop has there been a duo like this on stage, in the media, and with their music. I am not saying that they perform together on the regular, but they have on several occasions.

Yes, Lil Wayne dropped an album first, and was heralded as the next big thing when he came on the scene—straight out of Louisiana. Drake was working on TV and writing rhymes in Canada and people knew then that he would be critically acclaimed as the next… There has to be some consensus as to why  they both have achieved the success that they have had in the 21st century. A formula had to be created for them to get to this level. Looking back at Master P, and Shawn Puffy, it seems that they did have a regimen for their artists. It could be that they believed in their artists and would do anything to help them succeed, or it could have been in lamens terms –all about the Benjamin’s.

It takes a lot to wake up every day and be comfortable in one’s own skin and do what others do not believe is possible. Even if it is rapping, someone has to do it, we want entertainment at all times as consumers. Lil Wayne has been on more collaborations than any other rapper that I can remember from 2000-2012. Drake is undisputedly one of the best rappers in the game right now and is highly marketable. Each one of them has different styles. Lil Wayne is a thug with gold teeth, has a tattoo on each part of his body (that we can see), sips on syrup, and wants to now be a rock star. The later (Drake) is a singing rapper, good looking, a ladies’ man, and wears suits. They both wear their styles very well, in my opinion. Has hip-hop changed either one of these men, yes?

I believe that they had a good example to follow with the success of Master P’s, No Limit Records. His company was the staple for making it as a gangster, thug rapper. I have not forgotten about Death Row Records, but I really don’t think anyone wants to give claim to being a part of that unit (if so let me know).  One thing is for sure, we have not heard that much juice on either of these rappers, where we begin to start shaking our heads and saying wthf?  As men in the genre of hip-hop it takes a lot to stay on top. Music sales are declining, and people want to spend their money on individuals with real talent.

After thinking about these two rappers and the unit that has stuck behind them, I know that they are here to stay. They are both talented and believe in their own identity and success. They will do at nothing to be the best and that it what it takes today to continue to achieve at any level. I will let you look up all of their awards; to me what matters is that they can drop a rhyme at anytime. One can only hope that Lil Wayne and Drake hook up to do an album together in the future. We all would be standing in line, trust me.
