(ThyBlackMan.com) President Obama has a problem, a very serious one. The president’s problem is what I would call “The Great Black Disconnect.” This divide is the place where black America’s love and appreciation for the Obamas disconnects from the intense economic suffering of the African American community. Like a festering and infected wound that remains untreated, President Obama’s support within the black community is threatened by the fact that the people who love him most are suffering unlike anything our nation has seen over the last 50 years.
This week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its unemployment numbers for the month of April. The figures were consistent with the jobless recovery that has taken good care of Wall Street, but created homelessness on Main Street. The national unemployment rate grew from 8.8 percent to 9 percent, which will surely perpetuate President Obama’s somber ratings on economic performance.
A more interesting story beneath the surface is the fact that black unemployment continues to rise to levels that would be outrageous for any other loyal constituency. Black unemployment grew to a startling 16.1 percent, from 15.5 percent last month. This is an even bigger increase than the rise from 15.3 percent the previous month.
Black women are dealing with 13.4 percent unemployment, while black males have the highest unemployment rate of all ethnic groups, at 17 percent. The most recent jobless rate for African American males is higher than the rates of 16.8 percent and 16.2 percent marks for March and February, respectively. Most ironic is that while this much joblessness would represent a state of emergency for the rest of America, African American males are not given a license to speak publicly about their concerns. The mandated political silence within the black community is similar to the “stop snitching” campaigns that keep police from finding assailants in urban neighborhoods. No one wants to snitch on the fact that the Obama Administration has shown little public concern for distorted realities between black and white labor markets, and this is obviously disappointing.
We know that the unemployment problems for the black male are only extensions of equally deep concerns about mass incarceration and poor educational systems. Actually, the systems feed off one another, for the black male attending the underfunded inner city school is far more likely to end up in the unemployment line. He also has a very good chance of ending up in prison.
The big problem for President Obama is not that the black community would ever abandon him. They love him like a family member, and desperately want to see him succeed. The real concern for the president is that the black community may simply support him from the sidelines, as they’ve been politely asked to re-embrace the same disenfranchised hopelessness that plagued us before Obama made us believe the words “Yes we can.” When black Obama supporters ask suffering African American families to remain silent for the sake of preserving the presidency, they are asking them to accept the fact that President Obama is too busy with more important issues to address the challenges of racial inequality.
The grave concern with the “stop snitching on Obama” argument is that it tells black Americans that they are politically irrelevant and must rely solely on self-sufficiency to solve their problems, instead of asking the federal government to reinvest their tax dollars to help alleviate the crises that are affecting them. So, when you’ve adequately convinced a constituency that they are not important enough for the White House Agenda, these individuals may begin to feel invisible and unable to affect the outcome of an election. It’s hard to explain to someone that they are unimportant when it comes to presidential priorities, yet critically important when it comes to showing up at the polls. So, when the day comes for the single black mother on the brink of homelessness to choose between going to vote or going to her job, she is going to remember that it’s up to her and her alone to take care of her family. Therefore, she is going to go to work on election day and then pray that Obama gets reelected; after all “Obama ain’t payin no bills up in this house.”
So, The Great Black Disconnect reflects the fact that black people who love Obama may ultimately disconnect their love for him with their ability to invest the time and energy necessary to get him reelected. The Beyonce fan who doesn’t have money to buy her CD represents the kind of love that doesn’t show up in record sales. The fan believes that Beyonce will be wealthy whether she buys her CD or not. Similarly, the struggling black citizen with her picture of Barack Obama next to Jesus and Martin Luther King may feel that his/her vote doesn’t matter in a nation of over 300 million people. Also, the message of self-sufficiency being repeated by “stop-snitching” Obama supporters may convince her that the complexion of the White House makes little to no difference in her day-to-day life. In other words, she will disconnect her adulation for the Obamas with the impact that voting will have on her personal outcomes. This becomes a serious threat to the Obama presidency.

This is outrageous that black employment is so high today. I’m a 26 year old black male that watches the news constantly, browses the web constantly to stay updated on political information and this issue is “not an issue”. All I see is quick snippets once a month that talks about black unemployment. President Obama hasn’t said a word about black unemployment since 2009 that is ridiculous. There is 150 million whites in the country, 52 million latinos, 37 million blacks. Whites have an unemployment rate of 8%, latinos 11%, blacks 16%.
Now you would think that the unemployment rate for the group with the highest population would have the highest unemployment rate but it’s the total opposite. Society says that black men are lazy they don’t want to work all they want to do is buy shoes, play basketball, rap and not go to school. I’ve met thousands of black people some were drug dealers, drop outs, rappers and basketball players, and let me say this nobody wants to sell drugs as a career and not every black guy that plays basketball thinks he’s going to the NBA. The problem is that the jobs that provide a liveable wage aren’t open to black males.
As a black man with no college degree the jobs that are available to you are McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys, KFC and etc. Now there is NOTHING wrong with working at any of these places its just the fact is these low wages pays for “NOTHING”. I’m from Michigan and I’ve known plenty of white guys a lot of my friends are white and what I’ve seen over the years is that it doesn’t matter if you went to college are not if your white you well find a descent job. I got white friends that never went to college, has a criminal record and is still able to land a job in construction or labor area making $18-$20 an hr at the age of 21. I mean these white guys are working making money. When I drive by a construction site anywhere in Michigan thats all I see is white men and even white women working these jobs. Everytime I see a Comcast employee, any kind of heating & cooling job, guys working on the telephone poles, are fooling around with electrical boxes somewhere these employees everytime is white. But let me guess black people don’t apply at these jobs, or we get the job and call off.
You know this country kills me now their talking about President Obama got ahead in life because he is black. Let me say this I’ve never met anyone black that said their about to get ahead in life because im black, that’s the most hypocritical stuff I’ve ever heard. Almost anything in this country that doesn’t sit well with white people gets put into the limelight let me give you some examples the healthcare issue, people of color have been losing healthcare coverage for years, the JOBS white unemployment over the years was always at stable 5% for blacks we’ve been in the double digits for decades, but when their number jumps up 3% they lose their mind, this whole bullying issue with the schools I’m not trying to sound crude and my heart goes out to the parents of kids that ended their lives, but at the sametime bullying has been an issue in black in latino communities for years. In these bad neighborhoods around the country a lot of young kids can’t even walk down the street without wearing a certain color on their body, but America is blind to that. I can go on and on about the inequalities of this country but I don’t have that much time in my life to that, and with the way things are going it’s starting to not become a black and white problem, it’s more so a rich and poorer problem.
Thats what everybody in this country needs to wake up and realize that the rich doesn’t give a damn about color, except for green. Thats the America we live in today it’s a shame that President Obama doesn’t take time deal with this black unemployment issue, I hope he does everyone in this country has the same oppurtunity as everyone else this country would flourish, it’s 2011 and we need to be thinking about the future we are definately falling behind the rest of the world. I hope I didn’t offend anyone with this comment if I did I sincerely apologize, it’s just I am so sick tired of hearing bad news about this country.
Black men are an indangered species now. We always have been. But now that we are officially in the last days; when Satan’s antichrist beast is wreaking havoc on the whole worlds unemployment; we have to trust Jesus Christ and His Almighty Father more than ever. And as they are New World Order globalist are trying to march us into World War 3; we have to have a greater level of faith to go through these coming end-time storms. Storms that Satan is sending to take away our faith; and except his coming Mark fo the Beast chip that is spoken about in the holy bible, in Revelation 13 and 14. Especially in Revelation 14:9-11, that says that if we take that Mark (chip) we will be tormented day and night without rest. Why? Because it will mean that we have joined and sided with Lucifer and his antichrist leader and leaders.
But those of us who are martyred for Jesus and for not taking their zombie making and mind controlling mark of the beast chip shall be greatly rewarded when Jesus and His mighty angels returns and conquers the antichrist kingdom and forces in hours. And our reward will be living like kings and queens on the renovated and beautified Earth; after the Great Judgment Day.
