Gorillas, Chimps, & Spooks: The GOP’s Favorite Things…

(ThyBlackMan.com) The  natives are restless again. It seems the more I try to sell what’s good about the Republican party to my liberal and black friends, fiscal responsibility, limited government and lower taxes, the harder it gets. Republicans continue to prove racism is alive, well and kicking within the established ranks of the party and it needs to be expunged from the GOP.

Once again, we have white Republicans portraying President Barack Obama, our first elected BLACK president, as a chimpanzee. Orange County  Republican Committee member Marilyn Davenport thought it would be funny to create a portrait of a chimpanzee family with a Mom and Dad holding a baby chimp in overalls with the face of President Obama and the caption, “Now you know why — No birth certificate!” Davenport then emailed it to  some of her closet friends and other committee members.

When her grotesque, disrespectful, racist caricature of the President of the United States was revealed to a reporter, she called the person’s action “cowardly” (ain’t that the pot calling the kettle black) and defended her actions:

“I’m sorry if my email offended anyone, I simply found it amusing regarding the character of Obama and all the questions surrounding his origin of birth. “In no way did I even consider the fact he’s half black when I sent out the email. In fact, the thought never entered my mind until one or two other people tried to make this about race. We all know a double standard applies regarding this president. I received plenty of emails about George Bush that I didn’t particularly like, yet there was no ‘cry’ in the media about them.”

Her excuse for being caught in “emailing while racist” ranks up there with “the dog ate my homework” and “some of my closest friends are black.” This reminds me of the summer of 2009 when Newscoma.com reported on its blog that Sherri Goforth, legislative aid to Tennessee State Senator Diane Black (R-Gallatin), emailed “Historical Keepsake Photo” to “the wrong list of people.”

Every white president in the image was depicted with a portrait or photo of himself until you get to our 44th and first black president Barack Obama. His picture is a caricature of the grossest, most racist sort: a black background with white eyes piercing through. This image is reminiscent of a spook, a racist term used for blacks to suggest because of their dark skin they can blend into the night and look like a ghost. The image also looks like a coon, another abhorrent caricature portraying blacks as lazy, inarticulate buffoons.

I dubbed this the long hot GOP racist summer of 2009 because South Carolinian Republican activist Rusty DePass compared Michelle Obama to a gorilla, who escaped from Columbia, South Carolina Zoo.  Then I wrote: “Either image is offensive and racist and particularly repugnant when applied to the President of the United States.  It reminds us this country and more importantly the Republican party has a long way to go on race relations and living in reality.”

Ms. Goforth didn’t resign and only was reprimanded by her boss. Of course Ms. Davenport is showing the same racist resilience and refusing to resign or admit she did anything wrong.

Since blacks were brought to America as slaves in the 1600s, we have been compared to monkey’s, chimpanzees, gorillas, apes, ridiculed as coons, sambos, mammies and Toms,  anything  short of equals to whites. The fact that Aunt Jemima syrup is still sold in the US is repugnant in itself. And that not too long ago, the image of the overweight black mammy with a bandana wrapped around her head like Mammy in Gone with the Wind still adorned the bottle of syrup is even more abhorrent and repulsive.

Apparently, Orange County GOP Committee Chairman Scott Baugh has called for Davenport’s resignation but he needs to do more than that. If she refuses to resign, Baugh should kick her off. As a conservative BLACK woman, I’m sick of talking out of both sides of my mouth, condemning the racism erstwhile calling myself a Republican and encouraging people of color to step into a GOP tent in which they don’t seem to be welcome.

Newsflash GOP:  White bigots don’t own the Republican party and We Blacks have just as much right as whites to believe in the Grand Old Party as the rest of you. GOP and Tea Party Newsflash #2: You both need to get over this birther and racist talk. It should not be tolerated by party leaders like Speaker John Boehner. Obama is a US citizen and yes a Black man. If you have a problem with either, get over it. This kind of bigoted talk direct or inferred isn’t going to win you elections in the 21st century. It may have worked before 1964 but not today. Criticize Obama on his performance not the color of his skin.

While some Americans may not agree with Obama’s policies, I think it shameful he and the First Lady continue to endure this utter disrespect of the office of the President by the people of the United States. I think some Americans need to go back and read the Constitution and remember “all men are equated equal,” yes that includes the Black president of the United States.

Herman Cain has aptly pointed out that more Republicans supported the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 65 than did Democrats. Eisenhower signed two civil rights acts before that. Martin Luther King was a Republican. Dixiecrats were the racists and KKK members. Liberals are happy to mislead those whose vote they crave and feel they deserve without question. Question, and discover the truth.

  3. John Hodgden, Sr. says:

I have always been aware of a certain degree of racism in this country and not just from whites. All races practice it but not to this extent. The incidents cited are inexcusable. I’m a Christian. Instead of seeing racism anymore, what I see is people with evil hearts who spurn the teachings of Christ, to love one another like family and to do unto each other as we would have them do unto us. Simple rules, not that hard to practice. They’re just inconvenient to some which does not put them in God’s house.

As for government; In the animal kingdom the Peking Order is a form of government for the animals. For the human species we have our own similar order called government. All goverments in their hundreds of forms have but one purpose definable in three words, “To Control People!”

The opposite of “Control” is “Freedom”. It is the absence of control. Our ancestors fled the control of their abusive governments and found in this country a land free of oppressive government. That is the freedom they found and wanted to preserve in the penning of the Constitution and the structuring of our government. They were very well aware of the fact that government, by its very nature, is the nemesis to freedom. They are mortal enemies. Why do we continue to empower our government with more and more control over our freedoms so that we end up in the mess that we are in? Our mess wasn’t Obama’s gig. It was our own doing from the day we founded this nation and then sat back and let the good times role. Our founders made us the guardians of our freedom by giving us the ability to restrain it and instead we have empowered it by constantly demanding it do this and do that. Our moral compass should have been, where do we draw the line? Nobody elected to any office is going to change a thing until we start doing our jobs and start sorting the wheat from the chaff.

  4. Ron Paul says:

Remember when the GOP stood for balanced budgets, individual freedom and isolationism.

The Republican Party has run up these deficits, we want the federal government to be in our bedrooms and between our women and their doctors, we started two wars instead of ending them like the Korean War and were supposed to stop the Vietnam War the Democrats started. We have lost our way!

So why waste our time with these fools who use their racist rhetoric, like this Marilyn Davenport and Donald Trump with his birther unproven myth, why keep Ensign, why do we allow our Fox news people to keep talking down our country. Don’t they know we can win the next election with optimism and hope instead of the current rhetoric, that the sky is falling, if we are not careful we will end up like chicken little where no one will listen to us.

I always find it interesting for those people for normal frequent sites like Rush Limbaugh and Stromfront now show up and try to mask themselves. These are true republicians defending their non sense.

  6. Ray Ray says:

I would say the representative who passed along the Obama/Chimp email wasn’t thinking. Given her position, she should know better.

Let’s not forget the fact emails/photos and news outlet cartoons of Bush as a big-eared primate were sent around as well.

To actually criticize Obama all you have to do is look at the facts. This guy is not qualified to be president. He shows anti-American views, has embarrassed this country on an international level. HE has Wall St/Goldman Sachs people in his administration. He race baits. He has an incompetent administration. He actually tried to place Van Jones in government. He sues Arizona for trying to protect itself and uphold its laws. The guy is a joke.

  7. susan jones says:

    Fact finding is journalism 101.
Marilyn didn’t create the email she simply forwarded it. Your reporting it differently slants the truth and and breeds more discontent. Trust me a 75 year old woman is not going to be that PhotoShop savvy…however it makes better news.

Second, I can’t get past all the grandstanding going on. Please is this all it takes a 75 year old woman that forwards a chain email…(our seniors send these all the time) that was racist to command so much media time.

    Side note what about Drawings?8

  8. wisdom49 says:

Republicans are about limited government only in the sense that they want to support their base the rich and make the poor pay. Even those like Paul Ryan who used Social Security for his education now wants to cut it. Or those Reps and Senators like Rand Paul are happy about farm subsidies on non-producing farms but are against entitlements…Huh…what is a farm subsidy. They call for less regulation and fiscal responsibility…like they continue to request for Wall Street, yet no one was responsible for the mess that wrecked the economy. You like most Republicans want something that someone else pays for. You want limited government but you also want roads and bridges and an educated work force but you do not want to pay for it. I am not a conservative not a day-dreamer like most current Republicans.

By the way limited government and States Rights were the same calls that came from the mouths of those who opposed the Civil Rights Acts. You are surprised by their racist emails and statements about our President…actually they are saying that about you but by standing up with them you give them cover… Like Micheal Steele, Tim Scott, Alan West, Herman Cain and not to forget Clarence Thomas you allow them to say see we have black people who agree with us. Nowhere have you heard an outcry from the aforementioned about this an other insults to our President, why because you do not want to upset your base!!!!!
