(ThyBlackMan.com) E3 2019 was in June and Sony no showed it. There was no reason to show up since Microsoft didn’t bring its homework and Nintendo had long since said “Meh, it’s hot, why bother?” Normally, when Sony shows up, they announce some dope first party games. This would’ve been the year where they hinted at the PlayStation 5. Apparently, the reveal date for the PlayStation 5 was leaked this week.
Yes, leaks happen roughly every month when it comes to smartphones. For consoles, it’s not exactly rare since they’re shrouded in speculation and prediction until the E3 where developers start talking about releasing games for future consoles. Then it’s like “What do they know that they’re not telling us?”
The PlayStation 5 Leak
The leak came via of memos acquired by 4chan which doesn’t have the best reputation overall. According to the leak, we’re looking at February 2020 when it could be revealed of course, Sony could push that back some more just because. Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if they announced in April or May leading into a presentation reveal at E3. After that, it would be a question of when Sony would drop it. Holiday season 2020 would be a dream but it could end up being holiday season 2021. Then again, the PlayStation 4 dropped the same year it was revealed.
This new PlayStation will come with 4K capabilities, a solid-state drive and a powerful GPU. As a matter of fact, the whole thing sounds like a beast of a console. It would have to be given how powerful the PlayStation 4 and competitor the Xbox One are at the moment. While how powerful it will be will make hardware aficionados salivate, your mainstream consumer wants to know about games.
I know I’m waiting for Elder Scrolls VI and there are many anticipating Grand Theft Auto VI and the next God of War among others. Is there enough time between studios’ recent efforts and the looming PlayStation 5 for us to get at least two of these at launch? Probably not. These games are getting bigger, more cinematic, coming with more features, and continuing stories across console generations.
At the minimum it means developer kits are already in the hands of developers and at most these launch titles will have to really hit it out of the park. I mean really hit it out of the park. I loved Strider–we need a new one by the way–and Resogun was fun but at least two heavy hitters should drop at launch.
Is It Too Soon After PlayStation4?
Whenever console reveal rumors drop, one question you’ll hear is “Is that too soon? Not really. The first PlayStation was released in Japan in 1994 and in the U.S in fall 1995. Five years later, the PlayStation 2 dropped. In the fall of 2006, we got the PlayStation 3 and seven years later, here we are at four. The main difference with PS2 to PS3 and PS3 to PS4 is the leap in technology.
While the PlayStation 3 was a significant step up from the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4 leap was like a ten-year gap in sports games terms. You know, because sports games drop every year and leap in technology, graphics, and features tend to be minor. A release in 2020 or 2021 would be a right on track with how Sony normally releases consoles, so the buzz is warranted.
Could this leak actually be straight from the source or is this some keen prediction based on Sony’s trends? Personally, I lean more in the latter camp. We’re in August and that is one long wait for something to be revealed in February in gaming/tech terms.
