Politics – Winter in America.

(ThyBlackMan.com) Seasons have changed.  Donny Hathaway called it.  “Everything must change.  Nothing stays the same.  Because that’s the way of time…”  There is no stasis and it’s impossible to maintain the status quo.  “Nothing and no one goes unchanged.”  And so it is with our country today.  It’s changing all around us.  In plain sight.  There’s no attempt to conceal what is an all-out assault by the current administration on American norms of the post-World War II era.

Some examples: The nominee for Deputy Attorney General, Jeffery A. Rosen, at his confirmation hearing, would not answer whether he thought the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision was correctly decided; this is the person who will be the Chief Operating Officer of the Justice Department overseeing civil rights enforcement, among other things; Julie Kirchner is expected to be named head of the U.S. Customs and Immigration Services; she recently was leader of the Federation for American Immigration Reform which the Southern Poverty Law Center labeled a “hate group” for its virulent anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Rick Perry, when he was running for president, wanted to abolish the Energy Department; he’s now in charge of it.  He didn’t know when he assumed the position that his department maintains custody of the nation’s nuclear arsenal and now he’s in negotiations to sell our nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia.  The phony upset at Congresswoman Omar’s comments about 9/11 belie the fact that our government is in bed with the country that sent 15 of the 19 hijackers on a kamikaze mission that day.

The pending nominations of Herman Cain and Steven Moore to the Federal Reserve are so ridiculous that Republican Senators, who have been loath to go against even the president’s most inane pronouncements, have pushed back.  And the president himself, who said he has never had reason to ask GOD for forgiveness, seems more afraid of the IRS.   Perhaps he remembers that out of all the stuff Al Capone did, it was taxes…

Before she was fired for refusing to break the law, the former Secretary of Homeland Security disbanded the group in her agency that was tasked with investigating violent white extremism; this is after the perpetrator of the massacre in New Zealand proclaimed in his manifesto that the President of the United States was the “ideal of white identity.”  And the just released United Nations Terrorist Entities List, naming 1,962 individuals and 455 groups, has not one white supremacist on it.

Change is neither friend nor enemy, but reality.  The question is, are we changing for better or worse?  Are we moving forward or backwards?  Are these changes making our country stronger or weaker; more united or divided?  These are questions you have to answer for yourself.

In my view we are on the wrong track.  Where the virtuous are seen as suckers and the compassionate as weak.  What does it mean when the government is actively discussing transporting “illegal aliens” to sanctuary cities, to cause them harm, as if those cities are not part of the country and their inhabitants not American citizens?

Releasing the Muller Report will change little.  It may add detail but its most damning findings happened in plain view.  The president, who publicly said over 100 times he “loved” WikiLeaks, now says he knows nothing about them.  That’s how he operates, outside any normal boundaries of shame; unafraid of being caught in contradictions or outright falsehoods.

There will be no “pivot” (remember talk of that) or change of direction.  This “den of vipers”- that’s what one former administration official called it – is hell bent on altering our course; and not for the better.  Impeachment won’t change that.  That will only remove the head of the snake while the rest remains.  They all have to go.

That’s why 2020 is so important.  Change is the constant and we have the power to bend back the moral arc of the universe.  See through the spin.  The retrograde changes to a less equal and more divided nation will only be halted by a more enlightened and less biased populace.  Then “Winter turns to spring…”
