(ThyBlackMan.com) To help yourself master a skill, you need a strategy and a plan. Nothing is impossible to learn as long as you are truly interested. Sometimes, the process becomes too overwhelming that people give up in early stages. To help you reach where you want, here are 4 stages of mastering any skill. No matter if you want to become a programmer, artist, creative thinker, an investor, entrepreneur or anything, follow these steps and see yourself making it happen.
DECIDING WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE
Sometimes you have to go with the flow, but sometimes, you have to have a clear idea of where a road takes you and which road you should choose. For example, someone wants to make a career in a particular field but doesn’t know where to start. Until he decides what he wants to achieve and where he wants to stand in the future, his thoughts will be full of questions like – should he learn all alone? Should he start assisting someone? Should he join some courses? There is no end to such questions because when the mind is not clear about what we want, we can’t expect any fruitful actions.
Do this:
Focus on where you want to see yourself in the future. Think how you can utilize existing resources for a head start. Be realistic about your plans and give yourself enough time to achieve goals.
SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH RELEVANT INFORMATION
When you surround yourself with relevant information about the skill you want to master, you invite new opportunities for learning and meeting people who have mastered it. When we see, hear and speak about the things we are interested in, we learn more and we program our mind to think about it more than all the other things. Your discussions with a group of people who are working towards the same goal can keep you motivated. Finding such people and groups is easy in this digital age.
Do this:
Join groups on social media platforms, ask questions and read answers on Quora. Read biography and books written by people who have achieved what you want to achieve. Plan a practice schedule and stick to it.
VISUALIZING YOURSELF DOING IT
Many of us are so much attached to smartphones and laptops that we do not spend time with ourselves. We feel incomplete without internet and that’s the reason some of us are going away from themselves. If you want to master a skill, the best way is imagining yourself doing it. When you visualize yourself doing it, you feel more confident about your goal and it strengthens your decision. You take your thoughts to a level where you start believing that you are doing it in reality and it’s easy to achieve what you want.
Do this:
Schedule some visualization sessions for yourself. If you fail to remember the new habit, just tell yourself “every time I eat something today, I will take 5-20 minutes to visualize myself doing what I want. So next time whenever you will feel like eating something in the morning, in the afternoon, in the night, you will automatically start following it.
GETTING HANDS DIRTY
No book, YouTube video or course can help you until you start doing it yourself. There are people who want to master the art of entrepreneurship. Their bookshelves are full of books, and their laptop is filled with “how to” videos but they are still not getting their hands dirty. They are afraid, they feel like learning more to stay in a safe zone. The truth is there’s no guaranteed way to succeed in anything. Failure can catch you at any time and in any way, but once after you start practicing skills, mistakes look smaller than the lessons you learn.
Do this:
Start doing it. Whatever you want to do, do it. Build some small projects for yourself, work on small projects, fail, learn and implement. Your knowledge is waste if you can’t use it in real life.
Everybody wants to master new skills, but only a few want to work and endure the pain. Remember, it’s the willingness to practice that makes things happen.
