(ThyBlackMan.com) Just because you travel a lot for business doesn’t mean you know all of the airport’s dirty little secrets, and we’re not talking about the fact that the trays on the airplane are absolutely filthy.

Let’s face it—flying isn’t cheap. Especially if you find yourself on a plane more often than not for work. Makes one ponder, how much does a private jet flight cost, and who can afford them (although it might not actually cost as much as you think!). If you spend a lot of time in and out of airports, it’s worth your time to look into all the ways you can save a little money.

Here are a few little-known airline secrets that can make or break your next business trip.

Get on the Phone If Your Flight Is Delayed or Canceled

Chances are, you’ve experienced a flight delay or cancellation. They’re frustratingly common, especially when you have an important meeting or appointment.

When that dreaded announcement shows up on the screen, most people get in line. Don’t be one of those people.

Get on the phone instead. Chances are, you’ll be able to speak with the airline and get a new flight on the phone quicker than you would waiting in line.

Then, make sure you speak about reimbursement. You’re entitled to payment for a delay or cancellation.

If you don’t want to have this conversation on the phone, and who does, you have options. In an Alaska Airlines complaint made by a flier with Service, he was able to get reimbursed without having to discuss all of his options on the phone.

Say No to Vouchers

When there’s a problem, the first thing the airline offers is a voucher. You could be offered vouchers for:

  • Cancelled and delayed flights
  • Lost or delayed luggage
  • Overbooked seats
  • A change in flight arrangements

In many cases, you can say no to vouchers. They’re a better deal for the airline, but they’re not a better deal for you.

For example, if you get bumped from a flight because it has been overbooked, the airline can pay up to $1,300 in cash. Compare that to the initial $200 voucher that’s offered, and you can see why it pays to wait and demand cash.

Know the Best Days to Fly and Buy

If you have a little flexibility in your schedule and you don’t mind being early for that board meeting, you can save by knowing the best days to fly and the best days to buy.

They may sound similar at first glance, but they are not. The best days to fly are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

However, buying tickets on Saturday won’t provide you with a lower price. The best time to buy tickets is generally around 3:00pm on Tuesday. That’s because most airlines research competitor prices on Tuesday morning and adjust fares by Tuesday afternoon.

When it comes to airline secrets, there’s a lot to wrap your head around. But, if you travel for business, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to try your hand at these tips. You’ll save a bit of money, and hopefully, a bit of your sanity.
