(ThyBlackMan.com) It seems the media is desperate for Janet Jackson to quit the industry. Despite Janet and her team admitting on various occasions that a new album is in the pipeline, the media just refuses to acknowledge it.
Instead they repeat the same mantra: Janet has quit the industry, gone into hiding, converted to Islam and refuses to see her family – with gossip about her brothers begging for money and her suffering from severe OCD.
In reality: Janet is recording an album, has visited her family last month (even supporting her mother Katherine to court), has always supported her brothers when necessary (though they are in no need of support right now, as they are on a very successful tour) and showed no sign of OCD when she was recording (even putting her feet on the table where she would later be mixing on wearing shoes – no OCD sufferer would do this.) No word on her converting, but Janet has always been a very strict Christian, with her book True You referring to biblical quotes, praying and bible reading quite a lot. You don’t change something so important to you in the blink of an eye.
Janet told Billboard last month: “I am working on a new project now.” Soon after Miss Jackson was pictured at a writing session with producer Tommy Parker and Ian Cross, the A&R and Producer Engineer at Janet Jackson Music. Parker is also a writer/producer at Darkchild Records.
For some reason the media seems to have always resented Janet’s success in the 80?s and 90?s, when her rise started with “Control” they immediately claimed it was just because of her famous brother, Michael. A very silly idea, seeing her first albums never charted and if you were to go by this rule all his brothers and sisters should have had massive hit records.
Then they started comparing her to Madonna and critics seemed to love explaining why Madonna did things better than Janet, despite Janet often scoring bigger chart successes than the ambitious blonde.
Before you continue reading realize that I have nothing against Madonna, but there are some facts that need to be told.
Still, the critics got their way, after 2004 and now take great pride in belittling Janet’s (in their eyes) lack of success. To some she is even seen as a “has been”. A very successful “has been”: her last album debuted at number one, and so did two of her recent movies.
Recently it has become clear that they are effectively trying to wipe her out of musical history. The fact that without her artists like Britney, Rihanna’s and Beyoncé’s would not exist is alien to them.
The Superbowl is always cited as the reason of her fall. But they forget: She played THE SUPERBOWL. There is a reason she performed at the Superbowl as she was one of the biggest female singers in history in music up until 2004. You can divide her career between the time leading up to the Superbowl and the time following it.
But come on, people. Of course Janet’s decline had nothing to do with a “nip slip”. Yes, it was a “wardrobe malfunction” in front of a massive audience, but should it really be still be important 10 years after? Many female artists fell out of their dresses at public functions, even at kids award shows. And come to think of it, if a nip slip could cost you a career Madonna wouldn’t have had a career in the first place.
It seems as if the industry was always hoping for an incident like this, so they could at least wipe one Jackson from history.
Look at the dates: the allegations towards Michael started in 2003 with the court case in 2005, discrediting his sister the year in between was obviously part of the plan. They would have found a way to do so without the incident. Janet was immediately blacklisted, but not Justin Timberlake, whom was also part of the act.
The only reason “Damita Jo”, that followed the incident, sold less, was due to lack of radio and MTV support and promo, which was due to her Superbowl performance. It was clear that the aftermath of this would be used to taint the singer ever since.
The second album following “Damita Jo”, “20 Y.O.” proved this, suffering again from lack of promo and continuing boycott of her music on radio and TV.
When “Discipline” came along they had to ease on the boycott a little and the result? Her 6th number 1 album, making her the only performer ever to have 6 albums debut at number 1.
Despite the media ignoring and ridiculing her, Janet Jackson still managed to sell millions and did a very successful tour. Still the media treat her like she’s nothing. They purposely ignore her.
Some claim that she was too old to be sexy anymore. Madonna is walking around in nothing but suspenders aged 55, Janet is 8 years younger.
During the years before The Superbowl Janet and Madonna were seen as equal. But after the Superbowl Madonna suddenly pushed forward as the biggest female singer of the 80?s and 90?s. It was as if everyone had been waiting for Janet to slip up. Janet Jackson had paved the way for many, but everything that should be rightfully accredited to her (and in some instances Whitney Houston) now went to Madonna.
It has now gone to the point where Madonna might as well have been the only female singer in the 80?s and 90?s until Britney Spears, JLo (discovered by Janet) and Destiny’s Child came along.
For those that don’t realize, Janet Jackson is a true artist whom changed the music and music industry. Janet actually spent much more time at the top of Billboard Hot 100 then Madonna. Her longest chart score was “That’s The Way Love Goes” 8 weeks at the top of the chart, Madonna’s was “Take A Bow” 7 weeks.
Janet Jackson is the only artist EVER to have 7 Top 5 singles from one album “Rhythm Nation 1814? and biggest debut tour ever with 2,5 million tickets sold. She was also the first one who used hands-free microphone in 1986, only later adopted by Madonna.
Janet Jackson also won more American Music Awards then any other female artist and was named as the first MTV Icon in 2001.
She also had 3 #1 movies and one #1 bestselling book. She was the first artist with #1 singles in the 80?s, 90?s and 00?s at the Billboard Hot 100.
Her dance routines are still “borrowed” by many new female singers – while Rihanna has based most of her image by recreating several of Janet’s looks reworked S&M style.
From Britney to Ciara, Janet Jackson inspired half the pop acts from the last decade and re-defined what it meant to be a female artists.
Still it looks like she will never truly be recognized for what she did. She said in her book True You that for the last few years she suffered from racism in the industry, saying “doors that had opened for others were closed in my face, just because of the color of my skin. (…) Today’s racism is more disguised and subtle. But it’s there – and it hurts on many levels.”
When Whitney Houston died a few years ago last her career was at the point where “the industry” now seems to want Janet Jackson to be. Her chart records seemed forgotten and she was seen as “a joke”. Yet when she died she was once again seen as one of the biggest stars of the 80?s and 90?s -for a while at least – and everyone was suddenly inspired by her again.
It would be sad to see the same thing happen to Janet.

hate to burst your bubble folks, 1 pointing out Madonna’s color is flat out racist especially in the context your using it. 2 They have been trying for 35 years to get rid of Madonna they wont play her on the radio either. Madonna gets far more hate from the press than Janet ever has. Stop using race as an excuse for everything!! The music industry has been dominated by people of color for years now, its pure horse shit to say other wise. Look at the sucess of Beyonce, Whitney Houston,Rhianna, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey etc the list is massive.
Im black and gay but Ill be damned if Im going discount a artist like Madonna over her color and that is exactly whats been going on for years. This woman has fought for the rights of gays and minorities for years. Like A Prayer caused a shit storm and the whole storm was Madonna standing up against racism we as people of color should support her not discount her. The bitch is where she is because she works harder than any one else in the industry. And no matter how people rip her apart she marches on….
Janet I have all her albums I always liked her but she has never been on Madonna’s level only Jackson , Elvis and the Beatles are on her level…
Yes Janet rivaled her in the USA with 5 of her albums her 1st two where horrible. That doesn’t mean she matched Madonna a woman every female artist as followed in one way or another. Janet is no where near Madonna over 300 million albums and over 500 million records sold. She is no where near Madonna’s influence on music culture even Janet was influenced by Madonna. Madonna was inducted her 1`st year of being eligible in the Rock n Roll hall of fame, a very rare event. She is a founding member of the UK hall of fame. THE only woman! Janet is in neither.
If it wasn’t for her brother Janet would have never had a career this is a fact you can deny till hell freezes over but its true.
Madonna has 22#1 singles on the World chart she is tied with Elvis for the most for a solo artist. She has 47 top 10 singles on the world chart.
Janet is no where close to this.
You pointed out that she has a single that stayed 1 week longer at #1 on the Billboard hot 100, then go on to say Janet has done better on the hot 100.. .Sorry complete bullshit BILLBOARD named Madonna the most successful charting act of all time period. She has had 160#1s across all of Billboards charts. She is the number charting act on the HOT 100 period. Madonna has had multiple singles stay over 10 weeks at #1 on the world chart. She has spent a record 137 weeks at #1 on the world chart more than any other solo artist. Worldwide Janet does not place in the top ten on any of the all time charts/
Worldwide if you combine albums and singles Madonna is the only woman in the entire top 10 she ranks #3 behind The Beatles and Elvis.
AND NO Michael Jackson is not bigger than Elvis what planet are you living on… He isn’t even close to what Elvis has achieved, his biggest achievement is Thriller which is the #1 selling album of all time that doesn’t make him bigger than Elvis. Worldwide Jackson has spent 65 weeks at #1, had 13 #1 singles and 33 top 10 singles. He doesn’t match Elvis, The Beatles or Madonna.
You cant put your faith in a bunch of internet hypocrisy or a record labels claims charting facts show the exact truth and the RIAA certifications give you a ball park of what their sales are, especially for the USA, worldwide is where the sales and certs don’t match as certifications outside the USA are not done worldwide.
Also Janet is not the most awarded female artist Whitney Houston for one has more awards and Madonna was named most influential.
Madonna has had multiple number one movies, multiple number one selling books, won a golden globe for best actress actually plays multiple instruments has written over 90% of her material.
Race isn’t whats screwing Janet its the exact same thing that’s screwing Madonna its their AGE. Janet was lucky enough to score airplay on black stations with her last single but overall she was ignored by Clear Channel. Madonna isn’t even that lucky she cant score a hit on radio at all anymore…
And folks no radio play means no hot 100 hit.
I strongly believe part (if not a great deal of this article( is inaccurate and outdated. The article states this:
“Janet told Billboard last month: “I am working on a new project now.” Soon after Miss Jackson was pictured at a writing session with producer Tommy Parker and Ian Cross, the A&R and Producer Engineer at Janet Jackson Music. Parker is also a writer/producer at Darkchild Records.”
If you Google “Janet Jackson Tommy Parker Ian Cross”, you will see this same news that goes back as far as 2009, with the latest somewhere arond 2014 (http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6205030/janet-jackson-new-album). Obviously news prior to the Unbreakable release, which I find strange that the article doesn’t even mention, in comparison to her previous releases. I don’t take credence in this article at all.
@Sanket Janet did a public service apology to the nation about the superbowl incident. She did not over sexualize her music, she did just what she wanted to do in terms of personal growth in her music. I think the author is making a comparison as to how madonna was able to allow the oversexual, untamed, attention seeking, shock value that she was known for and had been doing all of her career, could get kudo`s for that, but Janet who had been good for so many decades had never had a controversial moment, nor under performed in her career, suddenly has a nipple incident, that again, was not her fault, gets black balled like she was one of the Charles Manson followers. Janet has always made great music, whether you just liked the beat or whether it was before it`s time, she still had a message in every song on every album. She is a woman of substance. As far as Michael goes, none of what you said has been proven. None of what you think you know has been proven. MJ was never convicted of any of what they put out there. His life was always compared to Elvis and again, it was similar to the media’s attempts to keep Elvis lifted while corrupting MJ’s legacy through the mud. The same thing with Janet and Madonna. YOu make claims that MJ was a drug user/abuser well so was Elvis. The fact that MJ’s persona was bigger than Elvis’s and that MJ was still around to surpass Elvis’s status, “they’ had to find a way to destroy that legacy. The same thing they have tried to do with Janet. They want Madonna, who is white to outshine Janet by tarnishing her career and not allowing her to even be listened to or played on the radio, however they keep Madonna’s old music in constant rotation, and is fully willing to play any new music on white radio.
Stop drinking the cool aid and stop being racist as well. Your whole comment is ridiculously u clearly haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about. The media has torn Madonna apart for three decades they don’t play her on the radio either. Janet received a ton of airplay for her 1st single on black radio stations while Madonna got zip. Madonna hasn’t always used controversy either, and your in complete denial if you think Janet didn’t play the sex card almost her entire career. Your only attacking Madonna because the bitch is white that’s fucked up. Hate to ruin your day dude but Madonna is more talented than Janet… Madonna can actually sing live for one and don’t be a fool and deny it. Ray of light, Evita and Dick Tracy prove she can actually sing . No she isn’t even close to Whitney Houston or Mariah bit Janet’s vocals are as bad as Britney Spears.
Madonna actually plays multiple instruments wrote over 90% of her material, like it or not she is credited as the best live act and is the #1solo touring artist of all time. Janet is struggling to sell out arena’s while Madonna can sell out a statuim at ticket prices Janet could only dream if.
I’m still laughing at your ridiculously comment that they want Madonna to out shine Janet it’s hysterical.. What planet are you living on. Madonna gets a hell of a lot more hate from the industry than Janet ever has.
The only thing hurting Janet is her age just like Madonna. It’s not race… Rhianna is burning up the charts for years now she has scored more #1s in the US than Madonna, Beyonce is making huge bank as well do your race card bullshit is just that…bullshit
And dissing Madonna over her not acting the way you think she should over her age well that’s ageist same as racist.
Madonna has remained true to herself she has always been a rebel with a cause and she still is paving the way for others. She us fighting ageism now like she has fought racism and homophobia. People like you hate on her now over just as people hated her over her other causes. But guess what these other artists like Rihanna will probably be more accepted when thier older because Madonna fought the battle for them.
That’s why Madonna will always be remembered, it’s why she is a legend not just a mere icon.
Don’t like it… Tough
Still whatever happened in past, she’s doing great today. She’s sold 160 million records, remains most awarded woman artist, has $320 million net worth. And these achievements will not ever be completely forgotten. And she still enjoys what she loves, creating music, videos, going on tour, doing films, writing books and that’s most important that she’s happy.
I agree, once industry placed Michael on top, the next they placed him at bottom. They did the same with Janet. But one cannot completely blame industry for their loss. Michael raped innocent children and made drug abuse which made it killed himself. Janet oversexualized her music. There was no need to plan a costume reveal at Superbowl which went wrong in the end. She lost consistency in touring in 2000s. She didn’t apologized MTV, like Justin did. The result was less successful albums and blacklisting. As for industry, because they never gave second chance to both Janet and Michael and didn’t motivate talented musicians like them, today, US music sounds garbage, is decaying financially, and has gotten visually vulgar, and b-grade.
I have to agree with this article. Madonna catered to those fans via controversy and shock tactics, that is the only way that got her through her career, whereas Janet performed a showcase of true Jackson talent that resonated through her dance and then her writing and lyrical content of songs added another layer of how much of a talent and Godsend she is. Had Madonna not came with the shock value, she would not have been as big as she was. However, controversy even at her age has now become laughable, a woman her age flaunting her saggy butt and tits as if she were in her 20’s….even her concert though filled with props and controversial and demonic symbols as well as an S&M set filled with shirtless gay male dancers as a draw to her gay fans and the controversial nuns on stripper poles makes for a very interesting show…which is what has kept her relevant to the the degree of concert tickets being sold. Janet on the other hand has grown and matured at the level in which she is suppose to be. Her style has always been sexy, but modest and even now she`s gotten even more modest with her dress, is it because she converted or is it to prove a point that she has grown and in turn showing the world that the infamous nip-slip is all in the past and that she is past that and that everyone else should get past it too. Janet`s Unbreakable Tour was dynamic, inspirational, personal and mainly fan oriented. Janet proved several things on this tour, one, she still has it, two, she nor her dancers had to be naked to perform and be a woman and feminine, three, her point of hiring multi-racial, varying sized, varying age, all female dancers to showcase themselves sending a message to other female performers that being fully dressed and varying in size, and age is alright. It`s alright to be who you are as a woman…The critics loved the show, the equally loved the Album and it was critically acclaimed across the board as a very poignant album, as if she never missed a beat. Unfortunately Pop radio did not acknowledge the album and its many singles that all could have gone number one, giving her another Rhythm Nation or Control million selling cd. However, Janet did not promote the typical way, was it her showing that she did not need to do it the regular way or was she making a statement to the industry execs that she doesn`t need them just like they treated her as if they didn`t need her. Whatever the reason, Janet knows what Janet wants. She knows what Janet needs and from the lyrical contents of her new album, she is addressing everything in firm but subtle ways..from the murdering of young black men to the love of her new husband to the liberation of getting to the great forever, on through an uptempo, and up beat song about her brother Michaels. Only Janet can make the loss of a loved one, a superstar that she followed and sometimes mimicked, and a lot of times reminded us of him by certain facial expressions, hand gestures that all the Jacksons have, to do a song that would make a sad situation more brighter and comforting. No matter what “they’ are trying to do, no matter how they try to make a malfunction become her legacy…God has sent Janet to us to enjoy her talents, her greatness and her time her on this earth….and it is his will that Janet will live on in our hearts, through the internet, through reruns, through her music….but like she said to her critics and her haters in her song The Great Forever; I wished me being happy didn`t make you so sad. There`s a message in that lyric and in that song and it`s a powerful one.
