(ThyBlackMan.com) Somewhere around 1822 Harriet Tubman was born into American slavery. The institution truly didn’t suit her fancy. By 1849, Harriet was a run-away slave bent on abolishing slavery by freeing as many slaves as possible until the sordid institution either imploded or was revolutionized.
Soon thereafter, Harriet was dubbed Moses due to her daring escape plan and her vision to spearhead an exodus intended to free American slaves. As an anticipated consequence, by the tender age of 27, Harriet was a wanted fugitive with a hefty price wrapped tightly around her head like a miniature kerchief.
100 years later, somewhere around 1949… I think ’47, Joanne Chesimard (Tupac’s aunt) was born into Jim Crow; right along side hunger, homelessness, segregation, DWB and unrestrained domestic terrorism by American police officers.
Millions of African American children were lacking proper food, clothing and shelter. You know, basic necessities. Chesimard and others created breakfast programs, clothes drives, and after school child care centers. Their intentions were to free the psychological and mental enslavements that are chained to poverty, hunger, ignorance, and illiteracy. Rumors swirled that many of the programs were being funded by militant groups who were bent on making America GRATE again.
Soon thereafter, Chesimard was dubbed Assata (she who struggles). As an anticipated consequence, by the tender of age of 27, Assata was a wanted fugitive with a hefty price shaped tightly around her head like a miniature afro.
As I thought about the uncanny similaraities of the two sistas, I couldn’t help but wonder if, one day, Assata would have her face on American currency too, perhaps a century from now. You know, as soon as modern politics catches up with past history.
But as I thought about it, I said, “no, that would be outlandish.” But, then again, I’m sure if Harriet was alive today, she, too, would be stunned that her Black face is up there with the pale faces of her Masters. But, what about Harriet Tubman? What would she want? I wondered.
Yeah, what would Harriet Tubman want? It’s odd how we proudly honor the dead. Why not dignify thier infinite courage and spiritual wherewithal while they’re alive? I know. Because if Harriet was alive most of us wouldn’t go near her. We’re too scared. Her own brothers, Ben and Henry, hopped off the railroad and raced back into slavery, abondoning Harriet. The fear of fighting for freedom is real. Especially when the xenophobia stems from not knowing one’s self. We all know how fearful/skeptical we are of each other.
Shit! Freedom cost. You can say what you want about Donald Trump; but at least he ain’t afraid to tell us who he stands with or who he stands against. How many of us can say the same thing? And, NJ Governor Christie, who is seemingly Trump’s lapdog, has adamantly stated that the capture of Harriet…I mean Assata, is his number one priority.
In my most humble opinion, I think Harriet would prefer a gift like America removing the money off a Black Woman’s head as oppossed to being a POSTER GIRL displaying her head on the same currency being used to buy/capture/slaughter a sista freedom fighter who is fighting the same fight: Black Lives Matter. Black Liberation Movement.
