(ThyBlackMan.com) “I don’t really understand the appeal of dude. He dropped a few hot verses back in the day, but he’s been mad average for many years now. He is probably the most overrated rapper of all-time, but he did really well targeting his audience. He is a genius in that sense, but in the bigger scheme of things, there are a million rappers who were and are lightyears ahead of him.” – Rapper Jay Z thoughts on Eminem during a Music One interview
The debate has been going on for years over Eminem being the Rap God or the Greatest of All Time. Most often those arguing that Eminem is the G.O.A.T immediately mention that he has sold over 44.91 million cumulative albums around to Soundscan era and that those numbers continue to grow. Fans of the artist also mention that Eminem has sold more albums than 2 Pac, BIG, Nas and Jay Z. In fact Eminem is the best selling rapper of all time and the second best selling individual male artist, Garth Brooks holds down the number one spot.
I find myself wondering when sales became such a huge factor in G.O.A.T status? When did we step aside from listening to lyrics, the ability to tell stories through rhymes, the passion and intensity that makes lyrics apart of our life, our story and even the purpose behind the lyrics. I remember when rap/hip hop music was about creating awareness! Whether the artist was talking about sex, what they see happening within their community, the breakdown of the black family, the drug epidemic, the increase of crime within the hood and the dysfunctional relationship between blacks and cops.
During that time Eminem would never been seen as a Rap God and no one would dare refer to him as G.O.A.T. I can’t deny that he has his share of catchy hooks and a few rhymes that could be pulled from a few songs and put elsewhere to make something rather relevant but if we use the same standards which we argue over Jay Z, 2 Pac, Nas, BIG, T.I, Snoop, KRS-1 and others, we quickly realize soundscan era doesn’t factor into the mix.
I dig Eminem’s rag to riches story with him being born into poverty, born to drug addicted parents and constantly being bullied for being a white rapper. He definitely overcame the odds, but being “Rap God” isn’t about overcoming odds in your personal life, all rappers have done it to some level. This is about creating timeless music which can reach the hearts of rap and hip hop fans and in my opinion Eminem just isn’t cut out to be Number 1.
What are your thoughts?
Staff Writer; Shawna Brown
let me tell you that Eminem is real rap God and your hopeless jackass Nas is just a shity cockroach in comparison to Eminem and you stupid idiots why don’t you see Eminem’s album sales and you shitty craps just control yourself
The fact that your article starts off with a fake quote just goes to show your journalistic integrity. I’m not even going to start talking about how ignorant your argument is or how far removed from awareness you seem to be when it comes to Eminem’s songs, lyrics, etc. Just know that you couldn’t have written a worse article, with a worse argument, and a worse set of ideas and “facts” if you tried. Bravo.
Eminem killed Jay on his own song.
How come no one goes at Eminem anymore? Well…a few have tried. Benzino…Ja Rule…where are they now? Go ahead, I’ll wait….
I’m not saying he is the GOAT…but I am saying he is surely deserving of the possibility of being the GOAT. Anyone who says otherwise…”hi haters!”
G ths shit is old but can’t help to say somethn is Em man. Lose Yourself 12weeks numbr 1 – First (White rapper;Oscar;break tru with Rap God-Man to many shit to bring Up
THAT’S NOT A REAL JAY-Z QUOTE. IT’S IMPORTANT THAT YOU RESEARCH QUOTES. AND IF YOU KNEW HIP HOP, YOU’D KNOW HE WOULD NEVER SAY THAT ANYWAYS. THE FACT THAT YOU WEREN’T SKEPTICAL ABOUT THE QUOTE SHOWS YOU DON’T KNOW THE GAME WELL ENOUGH.
I respesct your opinion but, you are wrong. I cant believe you said “when did we stop listening to the ability to tell stories through rhyme with passion and intensity etc..” Eminem completely embodies that entire statement as much(and in most cases) more than other rapper. As far as record sells, no I don’t think that alone should make u the goat. But, you definitely cant knock him for that. Grant it a lot of white ppl buy it, blacks do too. I am one of them. I am a student of hip hop born in 81 so I grew up through a great era in music and Eminems lyrical ability on the mic is unmatched to any rapper I have ever heard. He puts words together and uses vey tricky and complicated rhyme schemes that have left your favorite rappers in awe. He is also respected as top notch battle rapper being that he literally battle rapped himself from poverty to a deal with Dr.Dre (that alone says a lot). I honestly don’t think you heard his music outside of radio singles. I think if you gave his music a honest, objective listen, you would appreciate him much more as an mc. Not saying you might like all of his songs, but remember we are breaking down his lyrical finess, his passion and intensity in his music wich is why myself and many others refer to him as GOAT. With that being understood, we now we can add in the record sales, awards, accolades and his utmost respect for the culture that he helped move forward with his Hip Hop radio station Shade45, his Shady records imprint that launched the career of 50 cent and several others.
In closing, to say that his music has been mediocre for the past few years is a stretch. “Rap God” is considered one of his best songs of all time, and that’s on his latest album. So Yes Eminem is indeed the GOAT
ws
EM is the greatest of all time. Those who dont agree are those who haven’t seen the lyrics of his songs.
every time i see a post questioning em•s cred it always sez the same things. average for years, a few hot verses back in the day? ”i like the old em ” well we all do but i think he is just getting better not worse in fact im sure many like the new over the old, overrated?NO! catchy hooks you say…. weird ive always thought of em as verse heavy and less of hooks… and alot dont even have choris ive heard em diss hooks for a decade++ next 2pac n biggie are in a known catagory but then u say nas n jay z as if u accept j but not em ive never heard a bad em song i dont even consider jayz very good what so ever hes ok and i listin to him but he just has like almost no good music my fav j WHAT MORE CAN I SAY is jays best song most read never even hear or LISTEN they barly let em on the radio u think cause he bad? alot caused BANNED you hear love the way u lie good song but prolly 1 of the weakest on the track, millions of rappers light years ahead of him u say well, wheeeeerrrrrreeee are they??? as far as rappers who aint underground there like aint none drake is not even like rap to me there is not many real rappers shady killed them all u catch em singing on a track hes luring u to go and say some dumb shit
Yo

Em music is garbage and should not even be mention in the category of hip hop. Jay Z is correct. No one pumps Em in their car or on in the streets… Period! Who buy this guy albums? Please give me the stat on that! Sales people are so overrated! People be honest with yourself. Em is a pop artist and not a hip hop artist! Pop music outsells hip hop music. And… I have nothing against Pop music.
The rap stuff that Em be saying is like reading a Cat and the Hat book! Nursery rhyming at its best! Em stuff makes my ears bleed!
Shawna,
I’ll get to Jay-Z’s comments in a little bit. “I remember when rap/hip hop music was about creating awareness! Whether the artist was talking about sex, what they see happening within their community, the breakdown of the black family, the drug epidemic, the increase of crime within the hood and the dysfunctional relationship between blacks and cops.” First, your little section that you wrote has got to be one of the most ignorant things I have read in a long time. When you wrote “break down of black family”…this probably is already obvious but just in case you need it brought to light to you…why would Em rap about break down of black families? He’s already shared with us through his song about the break down of his own family, the relationship with his mother, with his daughter, with his daughters mother or have you not listened to any of his songs? Second, why does it have to be “black family”, why not family? You show your ignorance with what you wrote because according to you Em rapping about his own trials and tribulations with his family is not sufficient enough because its not a “black family”…get your head out of you a$$ and wake up!!! Writing what you wrote is part of the issue when it comes to “race” matters these days. Get with the times, get past it, people are people, stop seeing them as categories, as colors, as race. Third, Em has rapped about the drug epidemic, or are you that short sighted that you can’t see through his songs that he fell victim to the drug epidemic. He rapped about his experience with the addiction, his overcoming of it, his recovery since then. Or is it that he’s not “black” so he doesn’t count. Fourth, have you listened to the songs these days these “artists” are putting out?, sex is all over the place, and Em has had his share of songs about sex and that should be obvious. Sadly though, the “artists” putting out songs these days are starting to sound the same so when you mention “Rap God” let me enlighten you some more, YES many parts to “Rap God” had past songs, but it was Em paying tribute and showing his appreciation to some of the artists that inspired as well as influenced him. How many artists do you know pay tribute and appreciation to individuals after being in the music industry as long as Em has been. If that’s not enough, how about the countless collaboration’s he’s had with other artists, how about the artists hes helped take off? Or do you not take notice because he’s not “black”? At a time when music and songs are sounding like a blend of each other, Em brings out “Rap God” basically setting the bar a couple notches higher, bringing a new sound in a music industry that is bland, bringing a tempo that has rarely been heard, he just straight up spit, rapped it, how rap is supposed to be. NOT this crap where chorus’s take up 3/4’s of the track because they’re repeated so many times. Don’t even have me mention his appreciation and relationship with Dr. Dre, or do you not know about that either? I haven’t seen one artist have such a close relationship and bond with an individual who helped them rise as I have with Em and Dre. Everything you say rap/hip-hop used to be, Em has rapped about it all and don’t you dare try to say differently. Em rapped about President Bush and the War, or do you not remember that? Or is it the fact that it isn’t specifically “Black and Police” that you don’t take notice? Em has given us the privilege of sharing glimpses of his life, his experiences, his trials and tribulations, his mind, his heart, through his heart and you’re too ignorant and short sighted to notice. Em is G.O.A.T. because lets be honest, what artist has had the influence Em has had on a generation? What artist has done it as long as Em with such consistency? These day’s the “pool” of “artists” we have in the music industry in the rap/hip-hop game are an embarrassment. Rapping about how much money they got, rapping about partying, rapping about stupid shyt; so Em dared them to take it up a notch, to remind them how rap/hip-hop is supposed to be through his “Rap God” song. The real issue here behind your writing is not him as an artist or what he’s accomplished (how many Grammy’s does he have?…..WALK AWAY SHAWNA), the real issue is the fact that he isn’t what you want the G.O.A.T. to be, and to me your issue doesn’t matter to me and its people like you that keep certain issues society trying to get past that keep people anchored down and not progressing. EM SOLD OUT WEMBLEY STADIUM on the OTHER SIDE of the WORLD…how many other artists have done that? ZERO!…
Now on to Jay-Z’s comments…have you heard “Renegade”? If you have…then I’m just going to stop writing.
but…just in case you haven’t…listen to it…Em showed up Jay-Z on his own track…if that happened to me…I’d feel salty and feel a grudge…that’s why Jay-Z said what he said, because he can’t stand the fact that there is an artist that’s better than him, that the artist thats better than him, out-rapped him (Jay-Z) on his own track…)
I would continue but I’ll be nice and polite, I hope you get my point and I will encourage you to keep writing Shawna, you need the practice. But if you’re going to write something, don’t have the actual basis of your argument so flimsy. You’re argument is weak. When you write, before you write, get your facts straight, look at it with a broad perspective, open your eyes and ears, don’t be so narrow minded and ignorant about your perspective, develop your perspective, have it evolve. Your ignorance is shown in your writing, but I encourage you to keep writing. Keep trying.
U seriously don’t know anythin’ ’bout what you just posted… In my opinion (which I’m allowed to give) your opinion is garbage… Tbh, I didn’t want to dig deep into rap music for ’bout a year ago nd when I decided to get into it, I started with other popular artist tht u can mention but whn it came to Eminem, his style is just above their level… He’s Phenomenal, the best in what he does nd’ he’ll not stop in being that.. When it comes to rhymin’ (clear throat) he’ll rhyme down the earth to a stop..
Yes!! He’s that good.. Stop being a Joke and know what good rap is like.
Hey. As a journalist you should give up hope because you fucking suck at life. You started off your article with a clearly fake article considering jay was on tour with em that year. Everyone knows that shits fake. The fact you would even take the time to try to make up some fake fucking article like this goes to show how much you suck at life on a huge scale. Your probably some racist jealous black guy whose pissed off because you haven’t done shit withyourself in life and you pissed a white guy is considered the greatest of a black music. Maybe your white and your just an ignorant ass hole too. Either way you fuckin suck everyone hates you, you pathetic, don’t be jealous of truly talented artists just because your a Peter puffer. You probably were choking on a massive dick when you wrote this. Fuck you.
Dear Eminem hater,
You need to listen to two songs (if you already have, try one more time) – “Lose Yourself” and “Renegade”.
I rest my case.
Either people don’t listen to lyrics or they are just misinformed. Eminem is the best lyricist, rapper, storyteller, and creative artist of our time. The rhyme schemes and lyrics are insane. No rapper has wordplay, emotion, or insane lyrics like Eminen. He is the most talented artist of our time arguably. Ask 50 Cent, The Game, Tech N9NE, Kanye, Lil Wayne, and many others.
First that j quote is fake and plus em is king even tech said so and so have many other rappers
This made me laugh. First of all your jay quote was from a fake story. Em is the best MC we will ever see. His story telling prowess is unmatched period. His ability to write not just a song, but a well rounded concept album is extremely rare in hip-hop. His word play, punchlines, and manipulation of the English language are as sharp and original as it gets. He gets in a cypher with lyrical savages like slaughterhouse and by the time he’s done you won’t remember one line they dropped. Multisyllable game…I don’t need to even say anything more about that. He was a legendary battle rapper that was defeated only by racial prejudice. If you want to express your opinion atleast listen to his music first.
of course its on the website https://www.thyblackman.com
stupid black guy mad at white guys doing better than him at life
This dumb nigger mad at white people lol sick quote
Eminem is boss and has a bigger dick
Nigger nigger nigger nigger
i dont see why critic’s keep on em’s neck….the dude’s has got it all…lyric, story telling and all of them but people cant just get it off that he is a G.O.A.T ….but even if those name’s you mentioned there jayz, big, tupac where considered the G.O.A.T….you would still create a thread like this concerning they non-ability to be the G.O.A.T they would be then….the sumarry of what i’m tryna say is HUMAN’S ARE NEVER SATISFIED…..and stop saying trash that eminem dosn’t talk about what’s going on around…remember he was listed in the book ”200 people screwing up america”…..sorrry for my bad english…..typinq from nigeria
eminem is absolutely a GOAT. he revolutionized hip hop, made it okay for white people to at least attempt the kind of music.
FYI- the Jay-Z interview is fabricated. Plus, Jay-z would know better then to make an attack on Eminem. I don’t think he has ever lost a beef and Jay-z can rap but hes not a world class disser like eminem.
good try thy black man
It’s very hilarious to me that no one notices how he writes?. ” he dropped a few hot verses back in the day “?has he ever heard the verse in psychopath killer ? He made every rapper look like beginners or puss boys . What about the song right for me ? What about medicine man ? Exactlyyyyy. To all of the people who say he has nothing to talk about now just wish his rhyming was more simple so they can understand it easier because there minds are dumbed down .
“…through our lyrics that u hear in our songs”
u didnt even bother to listen to Eminem
“then these critics crucify u, journalists try to burn u…to get their hands on every dime u have”
i cant even believe u asying eminem doesnt have good lyrics since he is known as a lyrical genius
but “maybe u’ll admit it when he’s gone just let our spirit live on”
Jay Z overrated or suck?
In reality Jay Z is the one real overrated of all times. He will not win grammy awards without featuring performance or help of Beyonce,Kayne West, Alicia Keys, and other famous. He just suck.
Yup
Eminwm is the best rapper ever. Only rapper who doenst wear his panta too low, (:V) wear 3xl shirts. He has meaning in his songs about love drugs his beuatiful kids. All black rappers do is promote black supremacy and wearung pants low
Uhh…Shawna Brown.. We all can tell you don’t like Em.. In fact, we all can tell you don’t and didn’t bother to listen to his songs before writing this. We know this because when you said this, ” When did we step aside from listening to lyrics, the ability to tell stories through rhymes, the passion and intensity that makes lyrics apart of our life, our story and even the purpose behind the lyrics.”.. That doesn’t make any since. Lyrically, Eminem is a is in a league of his own. Story telling, every song has a story in its self, and every album tell a story in an entirety. Every song comes from the heart of Em and he’s passionate with every line and the lines underlining meaning and the relevance to the story he’s telling. Just take some time and listen to him.
I think with certainty, the only reason this article has received any notice or attention, is because it was tagged with “Eminem” in the title, which was the blogger’s attempt. Ots kind of hard to critisize Em being a big deal when dropping his name is the only eay you can get someone to read your shi-… Blog.
Honestly u dont know what yout talking about. When you said other rappers are “lightyears” ahead thats when i knew this post is wack. Seriously, you obviously never listened to his lyrics if you think we have stepped aside from lyrics. He one of the few rappers that do tell stories in his songs. Plus, sales do play apart in his status i mean how not? His music reaches out to all kinds of people. Like kendrick lamar or slaughter house or j cole. Eminem is unique, and that is what sepparates people in this rap game today. To many people rap about the same stuff. I wouldve respected this post but you didnt earn it. But i also understand that people have different tastes. I dont like meek mill he is overated to me. But if slim shady is not the “G.O.A.T.” then he is the most prestegious rapper of all time.
Hi, I’m a em fan from south Africa. Other rappers music gets played way more on the radio or tv than em songs do here. Honestly. But the guy still makes bigger songs than they do. Everytime he drops the world comes to a standstill just look at rap god people went mad over that. Jay z might have better style and more money but when it comes to lyricism, everything that you need to be an mc, and still make timeless hits. Em has to be #1 fo sho.
Jay z didn’t actually say that btw, that was a lie that spread around the internet and in fact jay z has given Em’ a lot of credit over the years. Also all the skills required to be number he definitely has, story telling (Stan) he definitely has the passion look at song for the moment. I think he has all the skills and him being white has hurt his rep as much as it has helped.
and miss shawna brown,,,music is a matter of taste, shady always gonna
make you famous
but allow me,,,if battling freestyles and killing verses as well dont mean anything….. perhaps lets put eminem and j in a song together and lets compare
Jay said “Few hot verses” fuk it.. Its debatable! There are to many verses he killed.
Eminem is second, tupacs the greatest
im not black or white, if i had the money i would put my money on eminem to go head to head in a battle or freestyle or sales or anything that has to do with rap against any of these rappers (famous rappers), not of these rappers have the kind of foundation that eminem has… and if not, give your best rapper the mic and i give my boy eminem the mic and let them go at it.
Eminem has released half the albums that Jay Z has, yet has twice the sales. Eminem is also proven to have used the largest vocabulary in hip-hop, over 30% more vocabulary than the next leading rapper. Everyone pulls the race-card saying he’s only famous because he’s white. But for real, who goes on itunes like “I’m just gonna buy all the albums by a white person!”? They say you can’t prove a opinion wrong, but I think I just did.
That Jay Z quote was from a fake source. Jay has already admitted that Eminem is one of the GOATs
Jay Z trying to chat shit about being average when he hasn’t put out a great album the black album….. Album sales don’t mean everything I agree but you can’t lie that Eminem’s lyrical is unmatched by any other rapper probably of all time. His enthusiasm and natural skill just make him unbeatable paired with his sad and terrible background, which he has story’s to tell, this is why he is the Rap God. It’s all down to opinion but you can’t argue with the facts and I’m sorry but they aren’t in you favour. Just expressing my opinion but still love your review keep it up.
He is not overrated… his lyrics, his rhymes, his ability to tell storys through his songs… untouched.. Nobody is and will be on that genius Level.. There are some people that are not familiar with the whole rap thing.. and they say that is overrated. But in fact, he ist the most successful and talented man in hip hops history
Oh the irony of Jay-Z saying Eninem has been average for years now. Jay-Z has not made a halfway decent album since Reasonable Doubt came out back in ’96. Not the biggest Eminem fan, but Jay saying that is hilarious considering the hack he’s been the last 20 years.
Why dont you look at his sales you idiot
notice how everyone on here adds color to everything its a joke how black people act get over it
