(ThyBlackMan.com) You cannot walk in victory and life a victorious life if you keep playing the victim. Yes racism exists sociologically, politically, economically and institutionally. But every time African Americans amplify it’s power, we empower such racism with the ability to stop us. First this happens in our minds and later it takes root to block our actions. We feel and act trapped. We feel hopeless. We act and react based on what we feel and what we believe. While physically slavery has been abolished (so they say), the mental chains we use to blame “the white man” or the government or the police officer are holding too many of our people in bondage.
African Americans allow our thinking to be controlled by forces that mean us no good. Too many of us make excuses and too many others simply believe they have to go into their prayer closets to overcome and win. But it’s not that simple. People, groups or institutions have the power to stop you as soon as you believe and accept that they do. I am not saying the threats and oppression are not real because I know they are. But they are not the giants that our people make them out to be and many of us are bigger than the monsters we face.
Nobody ever wins by making excuses, denying the problem, avoiding the mirror and blaming everybody else.
Apparently, by now each of our people should know their future is up to them, not the President, not the pastor, not the police and not the “white” man. Minimum wage is not a culprit that can stop a well informed African American with motivation, goals and a plan. Employers are not your parents responsible for your well being. Presidents are not saviors. And civil rights activists are not magicians. You make it happen. You must because you were created to, because you have the potential to and because you have the personal responsibility to acquire, achieve and reach your goals. It is not anyone else’s responsibility to believe in you, invest in you or be there for you more than you do for yourself.
As powerful African Americans, we need to realize that power and walk in it. A lot of people are talking a good game but walking in despair, poverty, self-deception, fear and excuses. Which of these apply to you, honestly? If you want or need something, map out a plan, get your butt up, stop waiting for others to help, stop making excuses and whining. Like Nike says, just do it. No the “white” man is not holding you back. No the devil is not stopping you. And no the people you work for or with are not the problem.
IF YOU KEEP PLAYING THE VICTIM, EVEN WHEN YOU COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE, YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING BUT VICTIMIZED YOURSELF AND HELPED YOUR OPPRESSOR KEEP YOU IN CHAINS
When you look in the mirror, if you do not see power, potential and purpose, there is a problem. If you do not see a focused king or queen, there is a problem. If you see a sad person in the mirror who is discouraged, lost, confused, angry or full of excuses and blaming everyone else, there is a problem. I suggest you turn off the game, turn down the music, skip putting in the weave, bypass the reality shows, put down the weed, drop the ego and start being the person you were called to be. You definitely need a clear head and you may even need to change your circle of friends.
This is your wake up call to stop playing the victim and start making things happen. If you do not take hold of your destiny, someone else like the government or your employer will do it for you. But if that happens, you may not like where you end up. You were destined for greatness but you will never get there by riding on the accomplishments of others, making excuses, playing the blame game and feeling sorry for yourself. It’s time to make it happen. No more excuses.

Jdean,
You are wrong yet again. I have received several emails from people who LIKE this article and thousands of people read my writings and attend my seminars and workshops. What do you do butt criticize? You don’t like my article because it describes YOU, a person content on playing the victim in life.
My articles, seminars etc change thinking and thus change lives. What have you done? As for school, wrong again. I attended the top African American school in my city. In fact, it was the top public school of any color in the city at that time. And I was part of the “in crowd” academically and socially. But that does not matter.
Don’t you get tired of making inaccurate assumptions that show your ignorance? The article is over your head and that’s why it does not make sense to you. Your mindset is the exact slave mindset that I set people free from. Stop fighting to remaining a mental slave Jdean.
They don’t like your article cuz its wack. In fact, your writing seems confrontational to blacks. I know all those plans to exterminate, imprison and enslave blacks so we need to have a healthy dialogue about it and agree as blacks that the problems are real. But no, ppl like you slow us down. You will be the one person to say the sky is not blue, but brown or burnt sienna. If i get discriminated on when im trying to be successful and pointing it out makes me a victim or blaming someone else? Makes no sense. No one feels your writing because we can sense the hatred in your heart. Did you get bullied or talked about in school by black boys? That’s what usually fuels you socially inept, lame , nerds to hate yourself. You would be the modern day Yacub, you just haven’t had your chance yet, f boy.
The fact that so few people like this article is proof that our people do not like to look in the mirror. As a people, we would rather blame everyone else for our failures. Psychologically, it is easier on one’s conscience than to accept personal responsibility for our own actions. But it is not more productive towards fixing our problems from the inside as a people.
To Jdean,
Apparently you do not know what a straw man argument is because you just set up several. Did I say get over being victimized or did I say we are not always victims like we want to appear to be? Did I say we should never stand up for ourselves? No I did not.
Black is the color of my car tires, not the color of my skin. When you understand that, you will be able to grasp why the Caucasian racist called us “black” in the first place.
Making demands does not do much good if that is your only strategy. Making demands does not do much good if you have neither the force nor the resources nor the solidarity nor the level of sacrifice to enforce such demands. We can say “justice or else” but the people in power will say “or else what?” We can boycott Black Friday but if we go to the same stores on Saturday instead, we have lost the impact of our big talk.
Confrontation is thee route you seem to want to choose. But what you don’t realize is that some factions of those in power are counting on that, expecting that, hoping we do that and prepared for that. I suggest you look up Rex 84, the King Alfred Plan, the truth about the NDAA put in place by President Obama and then go read The Art of War. Just because I do not say use a brick or a gun, that is not to say I do not advocate defense of ourselves, our families and our cause.
Jdean read my articles more closely instead of assuming you know what I am saying. I have written numerous articles on positive aspects of our community and lifting our community up. My seminars and workshops save lives. What the Hell are you doing besides playing the victim?
Sometimes we are victims. The word exists for a reason. The ” you are not a victim” rhetoric should not take responsibility away from the oppressors and antagonists when they fuck up. Why do blacks always have to get over being victimized, or never stand up for himself? And if we do something about it and make demands, then we are “victims” or playing the “victim ” mentality. It amazes me your articles. Its like you repeat all white supremacy talking points and rewrite your articles and act like you are writing this for a worthy cause or some important message to blacks. It just really makes you look like you have self hate. Write something or show a positive example of blacks, once. Please. I’m starting to believe you are being paid to say what you say or you hate black people, I’m sorry African American. If you keep repeating the same message, than it becomes propaganda.
