(ThyBlackMan.com) Did you see the movie, A Beautiful Mind? It follows the life of Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Nash. In it, we see how he eventually came to be called insane. He sees and hears people that no one, other than he, can see.
The movie is presented from his point of view, and so we are privy to the same imaginary sights and sounds as he. The film provides a first hand look at insanity. But it also raises a fascinating question.
How many others, of great accomplishment, have also “seen things and heard voices? Christ did. Muhammad did. Joan of Arc did. And so did all the prophets. If alive today, would they be called insane? What exactly are the boundaries between insanity, religiosity and reality, if any?
The work of master mathematician, John Nash, was supremely rational. But his mind, we’re told, was not? But it’s that same irrational mind that produced his breakthroughs.
Isaac Newton was the ultimate scientist. But he spent more time delving into alchemy than chemistry. And he devoted more energy to the Bible and arcane Egyptian and Hebrew knowledge than to scientific inquiry.
His theory of gravity, wasn’t based on his supposed observation of an apple falling from a tree, but on his painstaking study of the construction of temples in antiquity. Newton, like Nash, and many great mathematicians, was socially very awkward. Though exceedingly knowledgeable about how things function, they did not know how to function as people.
What does it tell you about a system, a world view, whose architects are social misfits? Is the rational world of science, the world we live in, an aberrant realm? Or is it that great thinkers are always misunderstood? And if so, what exactly is it that we do not comprehend? That to understand the real world, and its course, one has to actually step outside it?
One day, they asked George Washington Carver how it was that he was able to develop so many great agricultural products and innovations. He said, “Early in the mornings, I just go out into the fields and gather up some seeds in my hand, and God talks to me.”
