(ThyBlackMan.com) Joya, Gregory, I just read your comments, and it’s very apparent that both of you have benefited greatly from your old-school education. You were educated in a much different way than people are today. You were taught HOW to think, not WHAT to think.
.
I remember a time during the 60s and 70s when virtually everyone could see what was going on around them. But today, we have PhDs who don’t understand as much about what’s going on around them as many of us did in junior high school. “Dr.” Boyce Watkins is a case in point. Sometimes I have to scratch my head when I listen to that guy. If they’re passing out PhDs to people who are that clueless, we’re in serious trouble. The dude is, literally, clueless – and Cornel West, with his long, convoluted sentences notwithstanding – is not far behind.
.
But I’m going to focus on Cornel here, because he has the higher profile. Even the way he speaks is designed to camouflage the fact he’s not saying a damn thing. His speeches are designed in such a way that by the time he ends a paragraph, you’ve forgotten what the subject was. Thereafter, the people delude themselves into thinking that they don’t understand what he said because he’s so brilliant that they can’t keep up. No folks. You don’t understand him because he hasn’t said a damn thing.
.
Cornel West came up during the time when there was a raging debate going on over the racist claim that due to the “artificial boost” that Black professionals were getting from affirmative action, they weren’t as competent as their White counterparts. And during that same time there was a debate going on over the claim by some White scholars that Black people were innately intellectually inferior to White people and the rest of the population.
.
As a result of those debates, and the fact that West had an association with White Ivy League universities, the Black community embraced him as the poster child for Black intellectual competence without taking the time to vet him like we should have. It was that mistake that has led to the flawed intellectual monster – and the total embarrassment to many in the Black community – that we have today.
.
But I have to admit, he has it going on in one respect – he gets $30,000 a speech not to say a damn thing. So if it wasn’t for the fact that his stupidity is disrupting our political process, I wouldn’t be mad at him. But whenever you listen to him, always keep two things in mind. First, that this is a brother who takes a very long time to say very little, and secondly, if you don’t understand him, it has nothing to do with your lack of intellect – it’s because, again, he hasn’t said anything.
.
A good working definition of a pseudo-intellectual is one who relates common knowledge as though he’s telling you something new. That’s what Cornel West specializes in. I’ve never heard him give a speech that couldn’t be fully understood and summed up in one sentence. But West will take that sentence and dress it up in long, convoluted, and endless parentheticals, sprinkle in the names and thoughts of a few long dead White men, and embellish it with over-the-top and super-cool (by his standards) gesticulations, and have you thinking he’s the second coming of Socrates, even though he hasn’t said a damn thing of value.
.
The reason that I’m pointing this out is because this is the way that the Black community allows itself to be bamboozled. The powers that be can control millions, by simply controlling the mind of one man. That isn’t to say that Cornel West is purposely conspiring with the enemies of the Black community to undermine us, but social manipulators can simply take the character of a man into account to know he’ll be useful for their purpose. And I think this is the case with Cornel West.
.
Think about it. The only reason that we even listen to Cornel West is because he’s been promoted by the White power structure. They’ve proclaim him to be “brilliant” (but of course, they think that any Black man who can read without moving his lips is brilliant by the standard they hold us to), they’ve given him unabridged access to the media, and they’ve conferred the aura of Harvard and Princeton upon him. In other words, they’ve bestowed all of the symbols and accoutrements of stature, significance, and intellectual gravity upon him – and let there be no doubt about it, the system is expert in controlling our minds with symbolism. That’s why judges sit on a podium looking down upon the people and wear long Black robs. How much respect would you have for a judge if he was sitting at a table with you in a jogging suit? So symbolism plays a huge role in helping those who control the system to control our minds.
.
But why would the system want to bestow this favored stature upon Cornel West?
.
The answer is very simple. Due to West’s flamboyance, tendency to be self-serving, and lack of true depth, in spite of his highfalutin rhetoric, he doesn’t pose a real threat to the status quo. In addition, his flamboyance distracts the people’s attention away from more serious and sober-minded thinkers with a serious agenda. And I don’t mean to imply that this is some kind of covert conspiracy, in the sense that everybody’s involved to undermine the Black community. The conspiracy is on a much deeper level, on the level of those who manipulate the mores of our society as a whole.
.
The television producers who schedule Cornel West are not engaged in a conspiracy. They’re simply doing their jobs. It’s just the way that our system is set up – to promote the most entertaining personalities to the public – so people like Cornel West tend to be the ones who bubble to the surface, not the people with the more sober-minded agendas. So the conspiracy resides on the level of those who are conspiring to dumb-down America – those who conspired to abolish the Freedom of Information Act, and those who are coordinating the brutal assault on the nation’s public educational system. That’s where the conspiracy resides, and it’s definitely real.
.
The people who control that conspiracy are the social manipulators, and they would have loved to have had someone like Cornel West during the days of Martin Luther King, because with West’s demonstrated zeal to protect “his” turf, and his tendency to attack anyone who might obscure his position in the spotlight, he would have been doing the exact same thing to Martin that he’s doing to Barack Obama, Melissa Harris-Perry, Al Sharpton, Michael Eric Dyson, and Jay Z today. He would have been proclaiming that there was a flaw in Martin’s character, and claiming that Martin wasn’t the “down for the cause” kind of Black man that “I am.” And it’s more likely that not that he would have also been attacking Martin for not being militant enough, and too accommodating to the White man. He probably would have tried to align himself with Malcolm, much like he did with Tavis Smiley – because he would have been afraid to bad-mouth Malcolm. Think about it.
.
So there’s a very good reason why the White power structure has embraced Cornel West – because he’s a flamboyant clown, the Liberace of faux intellectualism, and they know his antics are more likely to keep the Black community laughing and giving one another high-fives, than seriously thinking about the gravity of the dire conditions within our community. Because again, West has demonstrated repeatedly, in spite of his rhetoric, that he’s not nearly as wedded to the community as he is Cornel West. Clear evidence of that is he’s never taught at a Black institution in his entire career. He’s spent his entire career teaching the children of those that he claims is the enemy.
.
So a good rule of thumb to prevent ourselves from being manipulated, is to never allow ourselves to become so enamored of anyone, that we give their ability to think priority over our own. While Harvard, Princeton, and Yale are great in preparing their students for specialized professions, when it comes to pure thought, and the innate ability to assess reality, their water is no wetter than your own. So when the manipulators trot people like Cornel West, or Ben Carson out before you, it’s game. Essentially, they’re telling you not to believe your lying eyes. For that reason, we should never, ever, take anyone else’s word for who’s brilliant. Always asses the value of every man for yourself. If you listen to them carefully, you’re more than capable of making that assessment.
.
But don’t just take my word for it, check out Cornel West “in concert below” – and while you’re doing so, take special note of how all of the supposedly “learned” people in the audience have also bought into his total nonsense as brilliance. And then, when you’re done watching the clip, just ask yourself one question – What did you get out of it that you didn’t already know or was of any value whatsoever? The answer to that question should bring you to the very same conclusion that I came to six years ago – absolutely nothing.

Ford,
.
You still don’t see the big picture. You sound like an angry racist, and you’re playing right into the hands of the people who are your biggest enemy – the corporatists who are trying to enslave us all. And as long as they keep the poor and middle class fighting and hating one another, well be powerless against their social and political manipulation. Hispanics are far from the biggest threat to your life – the corporatists are, so it is essential that every man, woman, and child who is a part of the poor and middle class recognize that fact, put our petty hatreds aside, and come together to fight our most insidious enemy.
.
In 1982, Forbes magazine began its now much-read annual list of America’s richest men and women. At the time of the first list, there were 12 billionaires in the country and fewer than 200,000 millionaires. By the year 2000, there were nearly 300 billionaires and about 5 million millionaires. Smith’s account of the rise of the rich and super-rich tells the story of five types of individuals: entrepreneurs, dealmakers, investors, tycoons (corporate executives, who are distinguished from
entrepreneurs), and entertainers.

.
No matter how you slice it, when it comes to income and wealth in America the rich get most of the pie and the rest get the leftovers. The numbers are shocking. Today the top 1 percent of Americans control 43 percent of the financial wealth (see the pie chart below) while the bottom 80 percent control only 7 percent of the wealth. Incredibly, the wealthiest 400 Americans have the same combined wealth as the poorest half of Americans — over 150 million people.
.

.
A recent Princeton study Shows that America is no longer a democracy. We are now an Oligarchy, controlled by the rich. So it is essential that we wake up. Racism is no longer the war; racism is now a TOOL of war.
…I stand corrected. You don’t see whites as the enemy. Whites did elect Obama twice. Now I think it’s clear that he is totally about power and doesn’t give a shit about whites or blacks. I think he sees the swarm of “undocumented workers” as his power base that will last through his lifetime. He and Holder opened the gates and begged them in. How friendly do you find these newly arrived instant Americans? Do more than one in ten EVER make eye contact? Smile? Some do but I have to think they are legals. The others are cold. I see the hate.
@Ford, @Hassan,
You don’t see the big picture, and your attitudes are playing right into the hands of America’s enemies. The game is about divide and conquer:
.
Attention Tea Party and Black Radicals: Either Fight as Allies, or Fall as Fools
.
Retired army general, and FOX News analyst, Paul Vallely, is quoted as telling Arizona Tea Party Patriots, “I had a call this afternoon from Idaho. The gentleman said, ‘If I give you 250,000 Marines to go to Washington, will you lead them?’” Vallely said as the group laughed and gasped. “I said, ‘Yes, I will. I’ll surround the White House and I’ll surround the Capitol building, but it’s going to take physical presence to do things.”
.
I’m just as angry and disgusted over what Black people have been forced to endure in this country as anyone else, but there are two reasons why I don’t spew bitterness. First, I can see beyond my anger, so I recognize that there are issues that are much more important than my right to vent that need to be considered, and one of the most important of those issues is – at least, in terms of the Black community – by constantly venting into the ears of our youth, we give young Black people a convenient excuse for failure. The fact is, some of us are lazy and less than ambitious anyway (just like many in every other group), so when young people are constantly bombarded with a message that says that the White man is evil, conniving, and intent on holding Black people down, it makes it much too easy for them to say, “Why even try? The White man ain’t gon’ let me move forward anyway.” We don’t need that. On the contrary, we need to inspire our young people and instill a sense of confidence and determination in them. We are what we think, so the very last message that we want to send to our youth is one of impotence and defeat.
.
The second reason that I don’t indulge in spewing anger is because it plays into the hands of the enemy. We’re currently knee-deep in a class war, and we’re facing an enemy who doesn’t care any more about poor and middle-class White folks than they do Black people. Yeah, they want to keep Black people down – at least, poor and middle-class Black people – but their ultimate mission is to undermine and subjugate ALL poor and middle-class people of EVERY race, creed and color. And keeping us divided is their most potent and effective weapon in doing just that. So when we’re constantly going around talking about the White man this, and the White man that, we’re not only being ignored by those people (including some Blacks) who are actually trying to undermine us, but we’re alienating White people who want to be, and should be, our allies in the struggle for universal justice. So why cut our own throats just for the satisfaction of venting our anger?
.
The poor and middle class in this country have been under a brutal and growing assault for the past thirty-five years. It has been documented that Ronald Reagan flooded the inner cities with crack to support his illegal war in Nicaragua (in which we’re still suffering the ill affects, and he should have been both impeached and jailed for); our public educational system has been underfunded and under assault, leaving many of us incapable of accurately assessing our political environment; organized labor, the first line of defense for keeping the poor and middle class out of total destitution, has been all but decimated; and now, these malevolent forces are aiming at the middle-class safety net – programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment insurance – which were initiated by Franklin Delano Roosevelt to protect the poor and middle class from literal starvation during and after the Great Depression.
.
So this is no time for the poor and middle class to be divided. It is essential that we ALL come together to protect our collective interests. If we don’t, we’re all going to find ourselves enslaved under the yoke of corporate feudalism – and yes, it can happen here, and that reality looms closer than most people think. Actually, there’s a very strong possibility that it could be as close as one successful Republican election away, because the demographics are against the GOP, so they’re in a panic, and they’ve clearly demonstrated that they’re without limits. So if they ever manage to regain control of government, they’re not giving it up again – regardless to what they have to do.
.
Retired army general, and FOX News analysis, Paul Vallely, is quoted as telling Arizona Tea Party Patriots, “I had a call this afternoon from Idaho. The gentleman said, ‘If I give you 250,000 Marines to go to Washington, will you lead them?’” Vallely said, as the group laughed and gasped. “I said, ‘Yes, I will. I’ll surround the White House and I’ll surround the Capitol building, but it’s going to take physical presence to do things” (http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/01/27/fox-news-analyst-tells-tea-party-group-he-can-lead-a-military-coup-against-obama/).
.
So it behooves poor and middle-class Black and White people to wake up, put our petty differences aside, and come together as a viable political force that’s ready to pitch a tooth-and-nail battle for the future of this nation. If we don’t, the Tea party and the Klan, the Black Guerilla Army, and the Mexican Mafia, are all going to find themselves shoulder-to-shoulder picking virtual cotton on the very same plantation.
.
Ironically, many White people already recognize this fact – that’s why Barack Obama is President today. But due to our unique historic background, lack of formal education, the proliferation of urban legends disseminated by poverty pimps, and lingering bitterness, many Black people are resistant to this reality.
.
While it is undeniable that some White people are dogs (just like some Black people), we now have undeniable evidence that MOST of them are good people who just want to live and let live in peace and harmony. If that were not the case, Obama wouldn’t have been elected president – twice. No, Obama’s election doesn’t mean that this is a post-racist society, but what it does say is, bigotry is being maintained and perpetuated by a minority of the White community.
.
Consider this – even if they had allowed us to stay home, and they automatically posted the vote of every Black man, woman, and child in America for Obama, there still wouldn’t have been enough of us to elect him President of the United States. Black people are only 13.6 percent of the population. So if only one hundred votes were being cast to determine the presidency, and every group was given the number of votes that corresponded to their percentage of the population, Black people would only be given 14 votes. But in order for Obama to become president, he needed 51 votes. Where did those other 37 votes come from? I’ll tell you where they came from – many of them came from White people. Obama could never have been elected president without them. So that’s in direct conflict with the message that the majority of White people are racist bigots. Numbers don’t lie, so while it may satisfy the anger of those who allege that to be the case, the numbers simply don’t validate their claim.
.
In addition, even during the Civil War, as brutal as this country was toward Black people, there were enough White men of good conscience around who decided to leave the love, advantage, and comfort of their homes and families to engage in the most brutal war that this country has EVER engaged in to free Black people from bondage – yes, there were other issues involved, but I’m not going to entertain a lot of nitpicking on this issue, because I see through it, just like I see through the racist arguments of White bigots.
.
Well, maybe I’ll address the most prominent argument – that this was not about slavery for these people; it was just a matter of citizens falling in step behind their government. The biggest obstacle to that argument is, we know that the Civil War involved much more than just a routine conflict between opposing government policies. The reason that we know it involved deeply felt, soul-searching, and moralistic passions, was because fathers were fighting sons. That fact alone speaks volumes. Personally, I can’t even imagine a cause that I would be so passionate about that I would take up arms against my son. But these people did find such a cause.
.
The bottom line is, the ultimate impact of these people’s sacrifice brought slavery to an end. That’s a fact that cannot be denied. So when we run around talking about “THE White man’s a racist dog,” that not only implies, but specifically states, that ALL White men are racist dogs, which constitutes the very worst kind of profiling of, for my money, some of the finest and most selflessly courageous people who ever lived. Black people might STILL be on a plantation – YOU might still be on a plantation – if it were not for these morally courageous people. So by broad-brushing ALL White people it represents the thumbing of our noses at many people, and their families, who made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. So to lump such people in with racist bigots, is the very height of ingratitude.
.
Thus, as I see it, we who truly believe in justice, and not JUST-US, and are not just using the word “justice” as a pretext to spew garden variety racism, should be just as dedicated to ensuring justice for those who didn’t just pay lip service to the concept, but who actually sacrificed their lives for the cause of justice. They had our back, so we should have theirs, and the backs of the descendants that they left behind.
.
For that reason, I asked a very good friend of mine to focus on solutions rather than bitterness when posting to my Facebook wall, because when I say I believe in justice, I mean it. I seek justice not only for Black people, but for ALL people. Therefore, I’m not going to tolerate racism or bigotry of any kind on my wall – regardless to which direction it comes from – and I was very gratified to find that my friend understood that fact by indicating that we were on the same page, because there’s a word for the concept of justice for some – hypocrisy – and it’s poised to destroy us all, and this nation.
…You took a really long time to say whites suck and those blacks who don’t see it that way suck also. Some who commented here see Obama is doing his best to wreak this country. I think he does have a grand plan where wetbacks overrun the voting booths, those of European decent are driven out of any sort of power, guns confiscated and the brown and black man unite against THE EVIL WHITE MAN. If it degenerates to that we will have the opportunity to be like the rest of the third world shit hole countries where those with the guns and cars ride around making sure government’s ass is kissed.

Get real,
Many more community organizers are exactly what we need, and far fewer idiots, while professing to be intellectuals, telling the world that Black men are more prone to be perverted pedophiles who are molesting their girlfriends’ children while the woman is at work.
.
The Black male has enough to contend with in this world without other undercover conservative Black idiots running around propagating that he’s predisposed to being a pedophile. But that’s exactly what Boyce Watkins, “the people’s scholar,” did. It was the most ridiculously racist statement that I’ve ever heard coming out of anyone’s mouth, and here it is being propagated by a Black man. Some of us are sick.
.
Boyce Watkins:
.
“Dr. Umar Johnson engages in the bold task of trying to raise $5 million dollars for an all-boy’s school and a black feminist writer at Madamenoire tries to destroy him for his conservative position on homosexuality. I just wonder if anyone thinks that, perhaps, you can disagree with a person without trying to discredit everything they’ve worked for. So, thousands of boys shouldn’t get a school because people want to nitpick at the founder? If they’d done that to their liberal hero Bill Clinton, he never would have gotten anything done.
.
“Dr. Johnson has made the note worthy point that a large percentage of homosexuality in the black community has come out of mass incarceration as well as child abuse occurring in primarily single parent households (a police officer friend of mine worked in the crimes against children unit and explained that a lot of mothers don’t know their kids are being abused by their boyfriends while they’re at work). So, the black relationship with homosexuality is not the same as that of whites. It doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for constructive dialogue about gay rights, but I’m concerned about this idea that any black person who isn’t in lockstep with the Obama Administration’s aggressive push on the gay agenda is somehow an ignorant bigot.
.
“There are those who have different opinions, and they should not be terrorized for having them. Constructive debate is fine, but it shouldn’t devolve into some kind of modern day McCarthyism.
.
“If Dr. Johnson were a rapper or athlete spitting out ridiculous nonsense, he would be everybody’s favorite negro. But when he tells black men to empower themselves, he’s suddenly a threat. Get out of my face with that crap. You can disagree with the man without undermining his right to educate black boys. Ironically, if he were a gay man, he’d have his five million dollars already.”

Black People: Beware of the “Bligots” (Black-on-Black Bigots)
.
What many Black people fail to realize is, Black people are the product of the very same racist environment as White people. As a result, some of the weaker-minded among us are just as bigoted toward other Black people as any sheet-wearing Hillbilly. I call it “bligotry” (Black-on-Black bigotry).
.
That’s one of the major problems that we have in the community. These people make it a point to disrupt our ability to organize and move forward, just as they were a major contributor to what brought down the Civil Rights Movement of the sixties. During the sixties the FBI sent bligots in to infiltrate civil rights groups and disrupt the various organizations and create havoc by posing as super-militant advocates for justice. The FBI called it Operation “CoIntelPro” – and please understand this – I didn’t have to read about it, because I WAS THERE. They’re using the exact same tactics, but these turncoats are hoping that you’re so dumb that you don’t know anything about history. They started accusing the leaders of the various civil rights groups of being Uncle Toms (sound familiar?). They also spied on Martin Luther King and started called him “Martin Luther Coon,” and also played a role in the murder of Malcolm.
.
These same turncoats are at work today. You can recognize them because, instead of helping to organizing the community to put pressure on the Republican Party to end their obstructionism, they’re out with bullhorns, blaming all of our problems on President Obama – and that’s in spite of the fact that they know full well that the United States Constitution gives the U.S. House of Representatives SOLE power over spending, and Barack Obama can’t do a thing without getting the Republican House to go along with him. Instead, they’re telling you that Obama is a war criminal for using drones in Afghanistan, when they KNOW that President Obama is trying to protect YOU, by preventing Al Qaeda, or any terrorist group, from getting their hands on Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal – which, by the way, they found Osama Bin Laden and family, living very comfortably and securely, right down the street from.
.
SO DON’T BE FOOLED BY THESE PEOPLE, BECAUSE THEY ARE VICIOUS AND DANGEROUS. THEY PRETEND TO BE ONE OF US, WHEN ACTUALLY, THEY’RE THE LAP DOGS OF THOSE WHO ARE OUT TO DESTROY US.
.
GEORGE W. BUSH WON THE 2000 ELECTION TO BECOME PRESIDENT IN FLORIDA BY 537 VOTES AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE RALPH NADER/CORNEL WEST COALITION TAKING 97,488 VOTES FROM THE DEMOCRATS IN FLORIDA ALONE. NOW ASK YOURSELF, DURING BUSHS’ EIGHT YEARS IN OFFICE, DID YOU HEAR CORNEL WEST BAD-MOUTHING GEORGE W. BUSH LIKE HE IS BARACK OBAMA? NO HE DIDN’T. THINK ABOUT THAT.
.
TAKE IT FROM AN OLD-SCHOOL ACTIVIST. THERE’S SOME FUNK IN THE GAME. SO DON’T BE FOOLED BY WOOLLY HAIR, A GIFT OF GAB, AND A SPINNING COAT JUST BECAUSE HE CALLS YOU “MY DEAR BROTHER.” LISTEN TO ME, BECAUSE I’VE BEEN THERE, AND DONE THIS.

Yocheved and dcarter910 hit the nail on the head.
Hopefully all the commenters from here on will make an attempt to convey their message with a degree of rhetorical skill or scholarship. Some of the previous comments are borderline bigoted, some imbecilic, and a few have been way off the course of restitute.
Seems like you could be describing obama the problem is there’s people to close minded to recognize that. When all these illegal immigrants finally start making their way into government how much power do you think a black man will have then. Why does his administration supports sending so many illegal immigrants into this country? Now poor blacks will have to compete with Hispanics for jobs and resources who do you think will win this battle? The Congressional Black Caucus already powerless will be gone within 10 years. Obama will be rich retire somewhere in the country with his white friends and you Negroes will be out here scrapping for jobs against Hispanics. You coons are supporting a man who sending you to the economic plantation and dancing behind him the whole way. The welfare system is bankrupt the country is bankrupt the medical system is broken so who do you think is going to, save you poor ignorant black folks now? Hispanics? yeah right! Oh that’s right you are waiting for the white man White man wrapped in chocolate skin good luck with that! You Negroes are bunch of useful idiots useful for a simple vote to put the right people in the office that will destroy your communities and future.
The truth is, black people are still afraid to think for themselves, so they gravitate towards those white society tells us are the black “thinkers”. And they get caught up with folks who spout feel good and victimization things, instead of those who through their skills are actually making concrete differences without being beholden to anyone. Once again, so-called Black “Leadership” is “Talking Loud and Say Nothing”, because they have been bought, lock, stock, and barrel.
Carter G woodson wrote about people with the envious self hate you exhibit in The Miseducation of the Negro: If you can control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his action. When you determine what a man shall think you do not have to concern yourself about what he will do. If you make a man feel that he is inferior, you do not have to compel him to accept an inferior status, for he will seek it himself. If you make a man think that he is justly an outcast, you do not have to order him to the back door. He will go without being told; and if there is no back door, his very nature will demand one.
Yocaved is sick and has no clue regarding this article. Just another Cornell West who resents the president. Sick people in our community.
Damn Brother! Way to expose the Weapons of Mass Deception. Most Black Intellectuals & Politicians have something in common…Neither speak for the Black or Melanated Community. My mother used to say “Nothing hurts a duck worse than his bill” because once he starts quacking…..
Yocheved,
If you CAN’T see the difference between Cornel West and Barack Obama we can’t even begin to have a logical discussion.
Yocheved,
If you can see the difference between Cornel West and Barack Obama we can’t even begin to have a logical discussion. So have a good day.
You could replace Cornel’s name with Obama’s, and this article would be equally true.
Think about it.
