(ThyBlackMan.com) Like a forest fire that is never satisfied, the woes of the national economy are spreading through the black community in the form of double-digit unemployment and are wreaking havoc. In a display reminiscent of the great forest fires of the west, black wealth is being consumed in much the same way the forest fires consume dry underbrush and timber.
The fires of the western states’ forests are different, however, from the economic fires of the black community in that there are firemen risking their lives to extinguish them, while wealth in the black community is knowingly being consumed; our traditional firefighters have yet to pull fire trucks out of the station. In the past, “black political leaders” and civil rights organizations would at least sound an alarm. They would raise their collective voices in concert and say in a demanding way, “Black double-digit unemployment needs to be addressed!”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that more blacks received pink slips, on a percentage basis than any other working group during the month of October. Black unemployment was up in every category, except one. Overall, black unemployment increased from 12.9 per cent last month to 13.1 per cent. Black male unemployment saw a decrease to 13.0 per cent from 14.0 per cent. The 13.0 per cent rate matches June.
Black women took the brunt of the overall increase in black unemployment with their rate increasing to 11.5 per cent from 10.0 per cent. Black teenagers, the age group from 16 to 19 years, continue to be mired in the highest numbers of any group. Their unemployment rate increased to 36 per cent from 35.1 per cent. In considering these numbers, you have to remember these are the official numbers. The real rate of black unemployment and indeed the national rate of unemployment which increased to 7.3 per cent from 7.2 per cent are conservatively higher by as much as 2 – 5 per cent.
There is no escaping the cumulative affect economically and otherwise these rising unemployment numbers are inflicting upon the black community. One of the most vulnerable communities economically in the nation is now approaching, come January, 2014 which is only two months away, the start of seven uninterrupted years of double-digit unemployment when you include the Bush administration and the start of the Great Recession of 2008. Who would have thought with an African American president in the White House and a Congressional Black Caucus of 43 members that this would be the case?
What is remarkable about the suffering of this president’s most supportive constituency is that it is rarely talked about and receives almost no national media attention. There are no high level meetings taking place in the nation’s capital or anywhere else and there are no protesters standing outside the White House demanding the president and his administration address this issue directly.
I would think however, within a community of reasonable people and I am not suggesting black people are unreasonable, by saying this; nevertheless within a community of reasonable people, they would at least start seeing the wisdom of coalescing around a solution ( http://www.Jobcreationnow.com ). Of course, any solution should have as its priority the end of the affects nationally of this downturn and job creation. At least the discussion of a solution, if nothing else, will shine some light on these horrible numbers. And so it goes.

I wasn’t challenging your stats, I just wanted to know where they came from, in order to look for them myself in the future. Thanks for the information.

@ Satchel
Where did you get those stats from?
Black Unity means financial independence and happiness
@Satchel You are right.
@ewill The high school dropout rate IS a problem. It is not a problem confined strictly to the behavior of students and their parents; the entire system is broken, as I know from half a lifetime of experiences working in and around it. One of the things that will really help is for Black people to regain control of providing education, not just passively putting children into the existing and failing structures (the industrial model for which public education teaches no longer exists in this country, in all reality). That will be another excellent use of the redirection of that trillion dollars, and, excellent models already exist (I have already mentioned Geoffrey Canada; the successes of the Urban Prep Academy also come to mind).
Attitude and work ethic does matter as well; we agree on that. Some Black young people need an adjustment in their thinking on that subject — but there are a great number of hard-working Black young people who need more opportunity — and they are more than sufficient reason to redirect the trillion.
Congratulations on your marriage; I wish you and your wife the best.

@Northern_Magnolia..What’s needed is more people of conscious that can see that the solution for lack of jobs rest in own hands. Out of that One Trillion, $65 billion was spent on food, $29 Billion Automobiles, $29 Billion Clothes, $23 Billion Health Care and $6 Billion on Tobacco & Alcohol, which amounts to $152 Billion per year. I say this kind of money would worth some of our businessmen and educators leading the parade to claim some of our #1 Trillion back.
what nerve,
I’m sure anyone can see that I’m not a very good writer with misspellings and fragmented structures. Sorry, Chalk it up to my under education from the public school system, my dyslexia, lack of proper upbringing,…Violets, Volatile, Violent. What ever! LOL
I guess this is what you are talking about.
In Central Appalachia, there are areas were families have three times the national poverty rate, an epidemic of prescription drug abuse, the shortest life span in the nation, toothlessness, cancer and chronic depression.
Alright, make your point.
Northern_Magnolia,
Black, white, red, blue, green, a lack of education translates into unemployment or low wage jobs. Period. (I love using Period at the end these days…….LOL)
You talk about teen unemployment rate. You should be looking at teen drop out rate.
I would think most blacks 16-19 need an education rather than a job.
Parents need to make their children finish HS.
That doesn’t require any money, just a boot up their stupid asses.
The best advice after education is, drop the black attitude.
I worked for a company as a Christmas seasonal worker long side blacks, and working for a black manager. All the blacks stood around and worked slow. The reason? The pay was minimum wage so they were going to do minimum work. I worked like I owned the company. At the end of the season all the blacks were let go; I was asked to become a permanent employee.
I guess you could say I admire at lest one Asian. I married her.
One of the great tragedies behind the unemployment story — particularly in the realm of Black teenagers — is that we still have so far to go in rebuilding the basic Black-owned business structure to give our young people their first training in what it takes to be successfully employed and also to start their own enterprises. Every other community provides that for its youth, and of course we do have it as Black people on a limited basis, but not nearly commensurate to the need. A skilled redirection of some of that trillion we spend into the economy would be well used in supporting those small community ventures that provide entrance for young people into the world of work.
@ewill — The point of Black people changing our spending habits is not to bring white businesses down. The point is to redirect much of that trillion to build ourselves up, as most communities do in this country — including the Asians that you apparently admire. There is and has been a sizable percentage of Black people doing amazing things in business and education (for your edification: look up Reginald Lewis, Randal Pinket, and Geoffrey Canada as examples; there are many more, but that is a place to start), and Black people can afford, with a trillion dollars to spend yearly, to be able to support such persons and their work, and REPLICATE those successes.
It’s about time you learned how to spell violent. Perhaps you can give that same advice to your brethren occupying Appalachia.
Satchel,
Blacks are unemployed, uneducated, and represented in prison. There is no under or over. It is what it is. Most of your problems are self inflected.
I can go into great lengths about the black family/community’s lack of concern for almost every aspect of daily life.
Blacks-12% of the counties population
controls only 9% of the counties spending power.
Asians- 4% control 8%
Whites- 72% control 73%
Alright, Let’s divide business into black and white.
Simple math
72%/12%=6 times more whites than blacks
9%/6=1.5% black buying power spread across whites
If all blacks just stopped spending all their money at white businesses, the money loss to the white businesses would amount to giving all white shoppers a 1.5% discount on their purchases.
Do you really believe you have power and leverage in money?
What would happen if all whites stopped spending their money at black businesses?
The greatest power that any person has is knowledge and the ability to use it.
Get an education and learn to get along.
Blacks- Uneducated, angry, violent, and racists.
In the past, “black political leaders” and civil rights organizations would at least sound an alarm. They would raise their collective voices in concert and say in a demanding way, “Black double-digit unemployment needs to be addressed!”
Your collective black attitude has always been wrong, always demanding someone fix your problems. That’s why you are no better off now than you were 50 years ago. You and your leader (Obama) today are the same as your fathers and leaders (actually you had no leaders, just angry men with big mouths) of the past.
You don’t know how to fit in and get along.
You want to be black first and American second.
The best thing blacks do collectively is make trouble.
You can talk all you want about your labor statistics. They mean nothing.
Here is the statistic you need to think about, Asian unemployment rate 5.2%.
Lower than any other group. Period.
Our government for the moment, represent all the people, not a race.
Americans, not blacks.
Also, a little side note- Whites elected Obama, not blacks. Blacks only make up about 12% of the population and a little less percentage of voters.
My solution for the Black problem
Act like an American and have an attitude like an Asian.
I’ll address Satchel’s comments next.
We know blacks are underemployed, under educated and overly represented in prisons. What we don’t know is how to break the cycle. I appreciate this author for offering his idea of a solution (http://www.Jobcreationnow.com). My idea of a solution is using what we have always had in our communities, an that is our spending power. All we have to do is spend our money with our own peoples interest in mind. If you can’t find a black owned business to spend our money with, find a white business that has blacks on commission or at least heir them. We spend $1 Trillion into the US economy every year, we can leverage that money to solve our own problems. Until we are able to employ ourselves and educate our children, we will not be able to compete in this society as a independent people.
