(ThyBlackMan.com) I get sick and tired of surfing through articles written by various writers saying that if young person saying that it’s stereotypical and bringing down our community if our youth decide to not want to work for the government or corporate America. Maybe it’s me but the way I was raised was to chase my dream and to never let anyone or anything stop me from accomplishing any goal to set out to do. My parents also taught me to have a backup plan and to get my education.
Before writing I was a D.J. for a short time when that folded I started to practice story writing which winded becoming a more progressive career for me. I still would love to someday pursue a career in music production. But aside from all of that I just can’t understand that when I read these articles they say the only way to progress our race is to become politicians and work in corporate America.
First off being a politician let alone a black politician is just as hard as trying to be the next big thing in music or in sports but yet I always read these articles where we should strive to be politicians when we can look and see that being a politician isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. For example look at the scrutiny that President Barrack Obama has to deal day in and day out I mean this man can’t take a piss in a dark alleyway without having to deal with a bunch of racist Tea Party Republican clowns that block his bills as much as the L.A. Clippers block shots. But enough of that I just want to ask you guys out there what is the problem with a young person being an entertainer, musician, athlete or a writer?
I mean I understand that everyone can’t make it in those fields that I just mentioned but to say that we can’t progress unless they all become scientist, and Supreme Court judges which are also nice career paths as well. But again I just don’t believe that putting a gun to your child’s head saying that they can’t decide their own career path because it’s not politically correct enough or it’s too liberal. I find it funny that no one ever seems to mention that Dick Gregory who is a comedian is also a well-known activist as well.
Also Kendrick Lamar one of the more premiere hip-hop artist of today and is well-known for his socially conscious theme in his music but yet every time you guys mention hip hop you talk about the negative. Dee Rees who is one of Spike Lee’s film students who later released the criminally underrated film “Pariah” in 2011. Also look at Gabrielle Douglass who made history by winning a gold medal at the age of 16. Then you have myself the youngest Urban Fiction author of all time, I published my first book “By Any Means” in 2012 at the age of 19 years old and have sold 300 copies of the book and just released the sequel to it this month. I’ll leave you all with this question, how come older black folks don’t mention or acknowledge young people of color when they do positive instead of negative?

Thanks for the support Janet and Terrance. Terrance I hope your books does well and I willtry and set a business up fro myself after establishing myself as an author. Yeah there’s soem negative thing sin hip hop but isn’t there alot of negative in films, sports and even politics but that shouldn’t make you condemn the entire culture. And everythign that you may feel is negative might not be negative to someone else. I like hardcore rap and conscious rap because their a mirror of the black experience. Blacks aren’t monothielistic which means we are all different and thats what i was trying to say if my son wanted to bea rapper or a ball player im not gonna tell them to be a lawyer instead im a just support them and tell them to get their education and ahve a back up plan.
@ Brother Shawn
I commend you for being successful in your writing. I think you sold more books then me and my book has a plan to solve the problems in our community. Lol. I don’t think the elders want to discourage young people when they want to be a rapper or an athlete. They just realize how hard it is to be either one of these and would prefer that you try something that you would have a better chance of being successful. The odds are not in your favor when it comes to sports and entertainment, but in other fields, you would almost be guaranteed to be successful.
As far as the hip-hop music, there aren’t too many conscious rappers out there. They are the exception, not the rule, so you here more of the negative rap songs then the positive ones. But you are right; you should have a plan B when it comes to professions that don’t have a high degree of success in. On a personal note, you should change the price on your digital book because it should be a lot cheaper because it takes a lot less to produce. You could probably sell a lot more at $ 2.99 – 4.99. I also hope you set yourself up as a business, this way you can write off your expenses for producing the book. I wish you continued success.
