(ThyBlackMan.com) You can imagine how quickly my jaw hit the floor when I saw the cover of Vibe Magazine, in which theyfeatured pictures of the stars of VH1 Basketball Wives, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and other reality shows, proclaiming them to be the “new role models.” Chrissy Lampkin, Evelyn Lozada, Tamar Braxton and Kandi Burruss, for some reason, are the women that we want our little girls to become. ( VH1 Basketball Wives, The Real Housewives of Atlanta )
How lovely.
Call me old fashioned, but I never thought a woman who wears her bra on the outside of her blouse would be a good role model for my girls. Rather than mentioning the women as new role models, Vibe Magazine should have used a more appropriate cover: “We’re a Corporate Monkey Who Has to Deliver Money for the man at any cost. We have to find a way to get you to buy this magazine, and the only way to do that is by degrading women of color even more than we already do.” ( VH1 Basketball Wives, The Real Housewives of Atlanta )
Ok, that might be a bit long for a magazine cover, but you get my point. I’m sure the next Vibe Magazine cover will sink to even lower lows, perhaps by putting a tail on a black woman with a title that says, “Black is the new Chiwawa.” I guess the idea of black women conducting themselves with civility, grace and intelligence simply makes for bad TV. Instead, outlets have bribed certain women into behaving like really evil animals. ( VH1 Basketball Wives, The Real Housewives of Atlanta )
Given that Vibe Magazine is now in the profitable business of exploiting modern day minstrel shows to destroy yet another generation of black children, perhaps they will consider a few other prominent African Americans to add to their role models list….I can even list them with suggested slogans for the magazine cover (by writing this article, I’m applying for a job so I can work for da man myself):
1) Flava Flav: “Who said you have to learn to read in order to be successful?”
2) OJ Simpson: “If a man doesn’t try to kill you, he never loved yo trick ass in the first place.”
4) The man who had 30 kids with 11 women with a minimum wage job: “He might be broke, and have more STDs than children, but ladies, we hear he can throw down in the bedroom!”
5) Nene Leakes: “She’s an ex-stripper who is built like a linebacker, proving that you CAN turn a hoe into a housewife” ( VH1 Basketball Wives, The Real Housewives of Atlanta )
I’m not sure what Vibe Magazine was trying to say with this cover, but I’ll admit that I’m disappointed. Perhaps when they are looking for role models, they might consider Michelle Obama or another woman that we can be proud of. It’s time to let go of the nonsense. ( VH1 Basketball Wives, The Real Housewives of Atlanta )
These are not role models. They are ignorant women seeking 15 minutes of fame.
I agree with Ams, thi has to be sarcasm. I cannot believe a reputable magazine such as Vibe would sink so low as to view these women as role models.
In a time where bullying is a serious issue among our teens, these shows do nothing but promote bullying especially bassketball wives. Tami, Evelyn & Shawnee are the biggest bullies with Shawnee as the ring leader, she sits up the stage and sits back and watch the drama unfold. I use to think she was a classy lady, I no longer see her that way. This show is a disgrace not only to black women but to women of all races. I dont know any women who behave that way. I agree with cathy, being from the ghetto does not mean you have to behave that way. Our children know better. these women behave worse than animals. I no longer watch this show because it is embarrasing.
What happened to women like Michelle Obama, Ophra Winfrey and so many other women that they could have used on the cover. The bottom line is money, well I will not be buing that issue of Vibe
I agree with Ams. It would want to be a damn joke.
I have not and will not read the article on the characters of VH1 Basketball Wives, The Real Housewives of Atlanta being role models for our children. I feel as an African American woman that comment is degrading to all African Americans families. What the writer is trying to portray is our children are not capable of respecting each other or conducting themselves in civilization. Mr. Writer what makes you think our children do not know how conduct themselves in public or visit other countries without being an embarrassement to our country. We do not train our children to act like animals, limiting their vocabulary to only four letter words, taking off their shoes, jumping on tables and throwing drinks at each other in public. As a black whomen raised in the ghetto I can tell you that this behavior is not the norm and I have never experienced such behavior even in the “ghetto”. So trust me Mr. Writer these characters you have choosen to be role models are NOT role models for our children. Unfortunately YOUR selections happens to be only a “select few of black women” that will do anything for money and fame but there is absolutely no excause for this kind of behavior on National Television. I challenge you to introduce them to your children to act as mentors. If you dont have children introduce them to your animals because that is where they all fit in.
I haven’t read the content of the magazine and I don’t plan to but when I saw the cover one word came to mind: sarcasm. It is the only thing that makes sense.
