(ThyBlackMan.com) “Islam sees him as a son of Islam … I can’t say categorically that (the president is not Muslim) because Islam has gotten a free pass under Obama.” – Rev. Franklin Graham
Those words, and others, were spoken by Rev. Franklin Graham on the MSNBC program “Morning Joe” yesterday morning. Franklin Graham, the son of famed evangelist Rev. Billy Graham, has repeatedly questioned President Obama’s faith and had been highly critical of the nation’s first Black president. Yes, this is about race, party and faith; the simple fact that Graham reserves no such judgment for Republicans Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, and has publicly stated that Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith does not concern him makes it so.
Franklin Graham’s words evoke a history of southern white Christian dogma that dehumanized African-Americans, supported the enslavement of Africans and aided and abetted Jim Crow. A legion of false prophets, sons of the South, has used Christianity and the Bible to justify the subjugation of Blacks and demonize African-Americans in the name of white supremacy. Franklin Graham is just the latest. Lest we forget that the Ku Klux Klan rode in the name of God and used the cross as an instrument of terror? It was not along ago when Rev. Jerry Falwell was spewing his hate-filled rhetoric and Bob Jones University was barring Black students and interracial relationships on its campus.
The new word of choice in the evangelical arsenal is “Muslim” and it is wielded to send a direct message to southern, white working class voters to question the loyalty of the President. Not that it should be an issue if we had a President who was a Muslim; after all, there will come a time when we will just as the time eventually came when an African-American came to occupy the Oval Office. Still, Franklin Graham and his kind play on the deeply rooted racism of many southern whites and a good share of northerners too, by using his professed faith and the Bible to cast doubts upon the morality of President Obama. It is a shameful exercise that only gains traction because of the ignorance of Graham’s followers and the silence of white Christians who know better. In many ways the lack of a sufficient rebuttal by Graham’s white peers is reminiscent of the silence of white southern clergy during Jim Crow that prompted Dr. King’s famous “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”
Franklin Graham’s rants come against the backdrop of the Southern Baptist Convention, the ideological foundation of white evangelical Christians in the South, considering modifying its name. The regional identification of Baptists is a direct consequence of the historical split over slavery – North v. South – with southern Baptists standing firmly behind the peculiar institution. It would not be until June 1995 when the Southern Baptist Convention would adopt a resolution formally denouncing racism and the role southern Baptists have played in the acceptance of racism in the past. Most telling is that the resolution identified racism as a “deplorable sin.” Apparently Rev. Franklin Graham did not get the memo.
We rarely have a discussion in this country on Christian terrorism, such as that on display when Tim McVeigh, a self-proclaimed Christian, engineered the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. We don’t want to talk about the Bible toting Christian onlookers who cheered when Blacks were routinely lynched in southern states. Neither do we talk about how self-proclaimed prophets like Rev. Franklin Graham regularly cast judgment on Blacks but are silent in the face of abject poverty, mass imprisonment of African-Americans, and the crisis of Black joblessness. Where was Rev. Graham when an innocent man, Troy Davis, was executed in Georgia? White evangelicals like to “preach” the Gospel while engaging in all manners of evil and sowing seeds of division and hate.
As an African-American I have no patience for hypocrites like Rev. Franklin Graham and as a Christian I loathe false prophets like him who sully the Gospel. We must do all we can to expose Graham and those like him, and challenge white evangelicals to provide the Biblical justification for their racism.

actually I think this man is a Racist by his article.
False Prophet- Oh realy now–A Question for you deep thinkers out there– Since when did Franklin Graham ever utter one so called “Prophecy” of any kind,He may be a minister but hes no fool,as the above poster pointed out there is ample reason to question the valitity of Obamas Claims re: his understanding of what Christianity is & how its applyed, Because comparing the man obama against Scriptures guiding dictates advice Its Quite self evident The man obama is at best another “IN Name ONLY” & Fooling not only himself but many who are as like minded he-including there limp aproach tword there adherance to the doctrinaly sound day to day practices found withing the bible, for example Obama openly & very publicly made a laughing stock of scriptures by deliberatly mangling the given meanings of the texts he drew upon and destroyed the proper contextual application in there proper settings did a few of the defenders watch the speech when he said the bible has no place to be applyed nor is it understandable therefor shouldnt be concidered in public polioy when making public policy
All “prophets” are false. The lunacy is cult savages who continue to believe that some crooks and insane loons are “real” while others are “false” when in fact every one of them are false.
There are no gods, goddesses, pixies, vampires, werewolves, none. Wonder Woman is a myth the equal to Jesus, Zeus, Hera, Odin, the list is endless.
I always find it ironic that blacks have adopted the Middle Eastern occult delusions filtered through European political realities when African occult delusions aer so much more rich and deserving. It’s all insane bullshit but the Jewish claptrap so many Christian blacks believe is among the dumbest bullshit occult lunacy out there.
No offense.
We are White; We are Black; We are Multi-ethnic; We are Hispanic; We are Asian; We are straight; We are lesbian; We are gay; We are blue and white collard workers; We are northern; We are southern; We are western; We are mid-western; We are atheist; We are agnostic; We are Muslim; We are Jewish; We are Christian; and WE THE PEOPLE are fed up with the destructive actions and vile rhetoric in American politics.
Take a stand. I created this petition because I am really concerned about the over-all tone of American politics and the blatant bigotry directed toward President Obama. What are we teaching our young people? I’m trying to collect 100,000 signatures and I could use your help

It’ll just take a minute! Once you’re done, please ask your friends to sign the petition as well. Grassroots movements succeed because people like you are willing to spread the word!
Yeah, come on, Franklin. Clearly the President is more than willing to send flying robots to kill countless (unless you have the right CIA clearance) numbers of Muslim men, women and children without feeling the need to explain himself to anyone. I guess you could say he’s given those practicing Islam a “free pass” to the afterlife.
How can you be so sure Franklin Graham’s questions about Barack Obama’s Christianity are rooted in racism? Barack Obama spent 20 years in Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s church, teaching Black Liberation Theology, something not even remotely found in Scripture. It is no less racist than anything covertly or overtly supported in the checkered past of the Southern Baptist Church. There is an Iranian pastor that’s just been sentenced to death for being a Christian in Iran. There are Christians being slaughtered by the thousands in the Middle East and in Sudan just for being Christian. What has our President said or done about any of it? As an IL state legislator, he argued against BAIPA, the legislation that extended personhood to babies that survived abortions. He supports Planned Parenthood, an organization founded by Margaret Sanger, a person who held court with the KKK and believed Blacks to be an inferior race deserving of extinction. He’s done nothing to address the fatherlessness, high incarceration, high unemployment and disproportionate abortion rate that plague the Black community. He has been schooled in the ways of Saul Alinsky, the person who wrote the curriculum for community agitation and who dedicated a book to Lucifer. He’s gone out of his way to defend, coddle, cater to and apologize to Muslims but doesn’t feel the need to do the same for Christians. Why is that? Just because people claim to be Christian doesn’t mean they are. As Scripture says, not everyone that says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom.
There are many reasons to question Obama’s claim of Christianity and none of them has anything to do with race. Just because Franklin Graham does so as a White Southern Baptist doesn’t mean he’s racist.
Tim McVeigh? really? Would the fact that the congress just ‘happened” to be voting on anti terror legislation that same mourning be just coincidence? I have met and talked with the husband & father of two of those killed in that bombing, and he was convinced it was an inside job. The firemen that entered the partially destroyed building found unexploded bombs in the basement, and were also convinced. The Fed’s moved in and when they were done, no evidence was left, just a very well packed dirt field.
Really this kind of article does more to divide along racial lines than Billy’s boy, has there been any race that hasn’t been conquered or put into slavery at some point in history? As a white guy I might add Herman Cain & Mr Steele have been the more intelligent voices in politics outside Ron Paul, and Ron it seems is the only one that considers the constitution relevant.
BTW If America is the “greatest nation” on earth, a standard for liberty and human rights, like no other nation….Why would we want “change”?
