(ThyBlackMan.com) Kym Worthy is a celebrated Wayne County prosecutor who is most noted for her prosecution of former Detroit mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick. When pressed by Kilpatrick supporters about why she was being so relentless in going after the mayor, Worthy began making public statements about how no man is above the law. If that is true, it seems quite odd that her office has failed to prosecute those responsible for the horrific 2007 Runyon Street slayings. Is it possible that Kym Worthy is part of the corruption that has plagued Detroit while pretending that she above it?
Davontae Sanford was a 14 yr.-old mentally and physically disabled teen when he was convinced/coerced by his attorney at the time, Bob Slameka, to pleading guilty to the Runyon Street slayings when all evidence pointed to Sanford’s innocence. Davontae Sanford has been imprisoned for the killings a little over four years of his 40 year sentence. Slameka, according to critics, is a prime example of attorneys who do not do everything in their power to help their clients but instead only seek to take short cuts to get a case over quickly so they can increase their volume of business. According to records obtained by NPR, Slameka has been reprimanded by the Michigan Supreme Court for misconduct involving the cases of 16 of his clients. Yet, as NPR notes, Wayne County, Kym Worthy’s county, keeps appointing him as a public defender when Slameka arguably should not be allowed to practice law period. Perhaps the county uses public defenders like Slameka because it will increase the prosecutor’s office chances of getting plea deals and convictions.
Is Kym Worthy’s office engaged in a cover up and it certainly appears that way too many, then the question is why? Why would Wayne County’s prosecutors cover up the confession of Vincent Smothers to the Runyon Street slayings and why do they continue to allow a disabled teenager to be framed for the crime? Why do they have a weapon used in the slayings in their possession which was recovered from a suspect’s home, Ernest Nemo Davis, whom Smothers has named as his accomplice, but has failed to charge either with the crimes? Smothers has confessed to the Runyon Street slayings numerous times and once gave his attorney permission to testify in his stead at a hearing for Davontae Sanford, which the prosecutor’s office objected to because it would be hearsay. However, Smothers has confessed to the Runyon Street slayings yet again, this time to Associated Press writer Ed White but what is different this time around is that Smothers told White that he would be willingly to go to court, take the stand and testify that he does not know and has never met Davontae Sanford that Sanford was not part of the Runyon Street slayings in 2007 for which he (Smothers) is guilty.
While one can only speculate as to why Smothers is finally ready to clear Davontae Sanford of the terrible crime he and an accomplice committed. Perhaps Smothers developed a conscious and wants to try to atone for his life of crime and does not want to see a young Black male, like so many others, spend time in prison for crimes for which they are innocent. Perhaps he was moved by letters from supporters of Davontae Sanford who wrote him in prison encouraging him to do the right thing and clear Davontae Sanford in court. Whatever the reason, the Sanford family is grateful but yet fearful that something might happen to Smothers to keep him from testifying and clearing Davontae. It is not every day that a hit man confesses to his crimes and the fact that the Wayne County prosecutor’s office knows about the multiple confessions and has in its possession evidence implicating another man, it makes one wonder about what Kym Worthy or others in her office have to hide? Why have they continued to oppose Sanford’s innocence in court and failed to bring the real perpetrators of the Runyon Street slayings to justice?
Kym Worthy and her office have a lot of questions to answer. She owes the Sanford family answers, the people of Detroit and Wayne County and most importantly, the victim’s families of the Runyon Street slayings. Considering all these questions, if Kym Worthy is re-elected, the people of Wayne County will have questions to answer about why they continue to allow corruption to rule their communities.

The American Justice System is garbage. Prosecutors care more about their conviction rate than they do justice. This is why you are not seeing any action on the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office.
