(ThyBlackMan.com) Last week’s debate amongst the Republican hopefuls was a spectacle for many reasons. First, it was (fingers crossed) the first of the Republican debates where everyone who actually wants to run for the nomination was actually in attendance. Nearly half the debates for the GOP nom so far have had glaring absences of major players in the campaign. Now the field is set. The debate also featured another interesting discovery that theretofore had been missing during the entire campaign season: Mitt Romney’s spine. Unfortunately though he may have found it too late to make any difference in campaign 2012.
Until last Wednesday Mitt Romney was the accidental front-runner in the GOP nomination race by virtue of a few incidental facts, 1.) He already had high name recognition from 2008, 2.) The rest of the field seemed utterly dull and 3.) He had a pretty good message for a challenger. Romney was actually beating the pants off his competition. However Romney was always too cautious a candidate to really inspire any excitement. While most candidates come out swinging he came out measuring his bat. While other candidates ran from event to event to raise their profile and get out their message Romney was content to give speeches and pick and choose where he would appear. When you launch your campaign making it clear you will not really compete in Iowa because you think you’ve got a better chance in New Hampshire, it doesn’t inspire millions to follow you into campaign battle. When you skip debates because as a “frontrunner” you are more worried about losing your lead than defeating your opponents on stage, that’s not a good sign either. Nevertheless the softy approach that “Mittens” employed allowed him to maintain a lead until the Iowa Straw Poll, when Texas Gov. Rick Perry broke onto the scene and made it clear that he was taking on all comers.
Ironically heading into last week’s debate, Perry’s first appearance campaign strategy would’ve suggested that the two men flip strategies. Gov. Perry, the frontrunner should have gone into the debate with a ‘win by not losing’ attitude. So long as he didn’t say or do anything crazy he would maintain his lead over the other seven pretenders on the stage. On the other hand Romney, now knocked back to second place by 10 points would be compelled by conventional wisdom to have both barrels loaded and go all out against Perry. The result? The men reversed roles and in the process Mitt Romney put on his best most presidential performance of the entire campaign season.
Rick Perry came to bring the pain to everyone in the debate from the start. He had a little sumthin’ sumthin’ for everyone on stage and made it clear that he wasn’t just running to beat Obama but crush the opposition as well. Most frontrunners politely ignore their fellow primary candidates or just banter on the surface policy level, not Perry. He struck a blow against Mitt Romney with his now infamous “Michael Dukakis created jobs three times as fast as you did Mitt” giving the cautious campaigner his first bloody lip since the season started. But in a shocking sign of life and gumption Romney responded in kind pointing out that not only had the governor prior to Perry done a better job of creating jobs than him, but that he was essentially living off the good work of previous Republican governors rather than charting his own path.
Smack+Down! But Mitt Romney didn’t stop there, for the rest of the debate he parried with Perry on every turn, attacking him on his now problematic stand against Social Security and at the same time giving him a painfully gracious pass on Governor Perry’s HPV vaccine mandate in Texas. Overall it looked like Romney actually wanted to win for once. Prior to Rick Perry’s appearance Romney looked like a man scared to face the campaign trail; against Perry he looked like he was ready to lead. If he can maintain that level of attack and grace he just might pull this thing off.
Of course the primary is really only half the battle, and while discovering that actually wanting the job is helpful, both GOP contenders have one harsh truth to deal with. Obama is at his lowest approval in his entire three years in office, and he is STILL tied or leading both of them in national polls. The president won’t be down for long, so if Mitt wants to do the heavy lifting of taking out the president he better keep working that backbone.

Wow, go Mitt supporters….you have backbone! You know what else, you write with confiction and intelligence. So refreshing.
It is time for everyone to unite behind Mitt Romney he is by far the most qualified, most prepared, and has the right answers and solutions to fix our very broken nation. He has spent his entire life preparing to becoming the great leader our nation so badly needs for this day and time. Ron Paul and Rick Perry are so far out of their league it’s not even funny.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRAXKbj7V4E Here goes Perry. People have to be dreaming to think Romney/Perry aren’t in bed with lobbyist and banks. Do you know the difference between a democrat and a republican? There isn’t.. You know the between a Libertarian and a Republican? A Libertarian means what he says…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVA2Tr_GTlk Wow people want this guy?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIeekoQfqVU People are crazy. Romney`s a flip flop. Perry`s a retard. Ron Paul 2012
The only intelligent vote would be Mit 2012 period. I am so sick to my stomach of these moronic idiotic stories. Unreal totaly unreal! Why is the press trying so hard to destroy this country! What is wrong with you people you cannot be this ignorant as to what our country needs what the hell is your agenda? Is it to bring America to its knees? My God mr and mrs press wake up and stop drinking the cool aid for breakfast lunch and dinner! Id like to know when and why the press turned against this country?
It is not too late… Mitt Romney is the right man, with the right skills to lead the nation at this time. Rick Perry is Obama and Obama is Rick Perry.
@Ann and Ellen,
Nobody is listening to your lies, distortions and pro Obama propaganda. Shame on you for using hate speech and falsehoods trying to win a political point. Mitt Romney has a hundred times more class and honor than you will ever have.
.The American people are beginning to see past the distortions that have been used against Mitt Romney. They are finding a man of very high personal integrity, extremely intelligent, and not running for POTUS for any personal gain or aspirations. Mitt is running because he feels he is the most qualified and has the expertise to turn our country’s downward spiral around. If someone was in the race that he felt was up for the job he would immediately step aside and throw his full support behind them. He has said that many times and means it.
Romney is a pander and flip- flopper, there is nothing ‘smart’ about Romney.
Romney is the guy who faith believes that the black race is the decedent of Big Foot ( see: David Patton high level Mormon Church person and Mormon Prophet Spencer Kimball’s book “Miracle of Forgiveness.”
Romney has no backbone, he is a satchel pant pander.
Mitt Romney’s greatest opponent in this race is neither Rick Perry nor Barack Obama. It is the media. To all media sources whether it be the press, radio or television. “Liberal” or “Conservative.” It is time to stop shellacking the man and represent him as he is. Given the opportunity, Mitt Romney will do as he has done in the past. Serve this Country and serve it well.
With both debates, the luster has been rubbing off Perry. There has been an un-rational prejudice against Romney since he took the stage 4 years ago. For whatever reason, which I don’t understand, the GOP has been looking for a White Knight. In the process they have missed seeing the Knight who is already among them.
His experience in turning failing financial situations is so renowned that his model is studied in business schools around the country. He did it in business; he did it in the Olympics; he did it as governor. Each time he did it with the support of typically opposing groups.
We have some serious financial re-adjusting to do in Washington. It is going to take cuts and will likely be painful. I want someone who will bring everyone together and solve the problem at hand. Romney has already proven his ability to do this. He does not back down, instead he gets everyone to go along with him and believe it was their own idea in the first place.
It’s TOO late – you need two o’s in the word to mean too many. God. If you’re going 2 try and write, get a clue
I’m excited that people have really started looking at Perry a little closer. Mitt Romney has in someways always been the underdog in the fact that a lot of people like to bash him for no reason. I admire greatly his intelligence and work ethic. I know he won’t be going golfing or on vacation when the economy is tanking,
“Still to late.” Must mean that it is quiet until it gets late…..Anyway, Anyone that says that Mitt Romney doesn’t have a backbone is mistaken. Not only does he have a backbone, but he is very well disciplined. No need to crush the competition for the sake of crushing the competition. He has been focused on Obama from the start and I live to see the day that Mitt Romney meets up with Obama in a debate.
This author is misinformed first off there have now been two debates with these candidates and when he said mitt had missed debates that’s only technically true mitt did 3-4 debates this summer there was one debate where only a couple of candidates attended that mitt didn’t attend. But most of the major candidates didn’t participate in that debate. I was all for perry until I learned more about him on immigration and mandates I think Romney is way better than him. If Bach Ann proves she has a chance then I will support her otherwise it’s mitt for me.
Me thinks Romney and Obama both share the same ideology. Switching to Mitch from Barack will definitely be more of the same.
Trying to make sense of the headline . . . is it supposed to be “too” rather than “to”?
I’d forgotten that Perry said anything about Dukakis, probably because Romney’s lines have all been so good against Perry. The four aces is the comment that is now infamous. The Dukakis thing hasn’t even been repeated.
I agree with the previous comment from tiafala that this is hardly Romney finding his spine, but part of the strategy. In fact, the campaign said all along they’d play harder in the Fall when things picked up.
I noticed the nickname “Mittens” is used in this article. Can someone please tell me why? It’s got to be the silliest label ever. Usually when someone wants to put someone down they come up with a name that accomplishes that. Mittens, like gloves, are a useful item, hardly a put down. Think along the lines of Tricky Dick, Tax Cheat Geitner, Slick Rick Perry, etc.
Dr Jason Johnson,
Speaking of Mitt Romney all of a sudden shows some Backbone. That is a wrong statement. Mitt Romney has a plan how he is going to work his campaign. He is a smart and a very intelligent leader. Things did not just come to him in a flash and open up his mouth. NO. He is not Rick Perry.
Just watch and see. The best thing you can do to help is to ask his campaign what you can do to help!
