(ThyBlackMan.com) Black people in this country have as much a right as any to be prideful. But it is no secret that when we are proud or confident for whatever reason, other races, namely white people, are quick to label our pride as arrogant or self serving. I’ve noticed that in this country, when a black man or woman voices how great they are, they are looked at as either comical or unforgivably narcissistic. When a black man is different, or makes an attempt to stand out, he is just weird. Or again, the thinking seems to be “How dare you try to be unique? You’re no better than anyone else. How egotistical of you.” But most white men of the same cloth are usually labeled eclectic or genius.
Since the days of Muhammad, Malcolm, and Martin things haven’t really changed with regards to what a black man can get away with in the court of public opinion versus what a white man can. And speaking of the white man, I have a theory about him and his own unique, as it were, style of arrogance. It’s been around for a while. He disguises it in his comedy and intellect, which he believes is always superior to that of other people. Yes, I am referring to the almighty sarcasm; those clever, witty quips that the white man or woman shoots out like a harpoon during everyday conversation to make you feel like the biggest loser who ever lived.
I believe sarcasm began as a defense mechanism for white people. Maybe it was an ingenious excuse for lying. But now it has become a real weapon of choice. Think about how easy it is to hide, especially when someone thinks you’re being funny. You can insult a person’s intelligence without them knowing it because they are too busy laughing out loud. And the quickest white person will get you every time. Pay close attention the next time you talk to one of your smart white friends. Try and count the number of times he or she makes a smart comment either to be funny or to sneak in an insult.
If you think I’m ridiculous watch Chelsea Lately or any of those other shows that come on primetime or the unoriginal rom-coms Hollywood is putting out now. Their comedy lies in the quickness of their sarcasm. A perfect example of this is the movie Juno. Go back and watch that movie and pay close attention to the dialogue. Then come back and tell me I’m crazy. I dare you.
Now some black people have caught on to this trend and are trying to incorporate it in their repertoire. Listen to our rappers. Today it’s all about word play and wit. Every now and then I saw Chelsea Handler put a black comedian on her panel and it almost never worked. Why? Because for the most part, like our cultures, black comedy is different from white comedy. It isn’t that black people aren’t quick; but it is a different kind of quick; more direct. The same can be said of our own brand of arrogance.
So what exactly is my point here? The point is the exploration of the cultural differences within this society. I believe exploration can and should lead to understanding. But my problem with this situation is this enduring idea that the sarcastic, self deprecating white man is more humble than the boastful and outspoken man of color. I have a problem with Conan O’Brien being able to ask for a street to be named after him and everyone thinks it’s cool or funny or that it should actually happen! What if Denzel made the same request? I guarantee you some writer for the L.A. Times would analyze his entire career in order to judge whether he deserves such acknowledgement. And somewhere in that sea of words you would find “egomaniacal” or “presumptuous” or “outrageous”. But Conan O’Brien, who in my opinion isn’t that funny and hasn’t contributed anything to society of any merit, can ask for a street to be named after him and with no backlash. Why, because he’s a comedian? Because it’s funny?
I maintain that the white man is far and away the most arrogant entity on the planet. You have to be a pompous individual to even imagine going all over the world and conquering indigenous peoples wherever you find them; especially when you are the global minority. One does not have to be loud and in your face to be a jerk. He can be sly, funny, and even charming. Billy Shakespeare may have said it best, “That one may smile and smile and be a villain.”

Very insightful piece. I don’t know if I agree with all of your points, but you do make some interesting observations. Yes humor is very contextual. That being said, as a black American I find refreshment in some of the humor our friends across the pond exhibit. Likewise I sat thru as much of Soul Plane that I could endure and grimaced through most of it. Ultimately it comes down to choice and sensitivities which are sometimes more regional than anything else.
There are white people making comments on this site that re-enforces the articles point, BUT they don’t think so. THEY think they are being fair minded. This site is obviously a Black forum (that white people MAY learn from), but to make comments against it is just arrogant to a whole new level. Being white and speaking against this article is like me (a man) telling a woman her cramps don’t hurt (knowing I really have NO experience with menstruations). Case in point; I have white friends who consider me too proud even though I don’t boast as they do. I’m just happy and proud. It seems some whites are just more comfortable with this OLD idea; blacks should be seen and not heard (And if you think I am being racist, be black for a day).
Billy Shakespeare? You had me until the quote at which point you showed a very typical black lack of respect and arrogance. Its William mate, show some respect
Jeremy I recently re-posted your article to my website and I have to say the comments I got rang true. While I think you made some really good points in this article, I do believe the tone came off a little racist. Being a black men myself who wishes to empower the black I can see that is your aim as well, however, this piece completely goes against that goal. I encourage you to take the time to review the comments left on my site. Reflection is good and growth is even better. Thanks!
Hello, I’m from Europe and I’d like to give you another point of view,
After reading you, I can feel two things. First, a general hatred and a will to take revenge. It worries me because even if, as you say, white men and women are the most arrogant individuals in history, it never can justify another arrogance. By definition arrogance is bad. But this is a minor point.
Clearly, the shows you mentioned did not contribute anything exceptional to our society, but creating a website called TheBlackMan.com does not either, because it is exclusive in a negative way and thus. Such a name shows that something has to be redefined. All of us here are men and women, we HAPPEN to black or white, but it is a minor detail, just like your size or eye color. I am worried that you give such an importance to it. In some way it is a slight positive discrimination. I bet that most of you who would see a website called TallMen.com would smile.
That said, I hope I do not offend any of you, because it is not my aim. If I wright this, it is because Europeans are not used to such debates. We have in a way moved on on certain issues, event though much work is still left.
Faithfully yours.
Patsy, I’ve seen some black on black verbal catfights that make what you just described sound like hugs and cuddles. That said, its sounds like an unhealthy work enviroment and I hope you reported the person, or slapped her later on after work.
Outside of that, I’m not sure what the point of this article is. I guess what your saying is that even when white people are trying to be friendly, they are really laughing at you. Nothing could be further from the truth. Black people and white people are frequenlty tense around one another. Humor is a way of diffusing the tension. It’s like being on a first date, you might not have a lot in common so you tell a joke to break the tension. That joke may or may not be funny, but the point is that you tried.
When too many times, we are being portrayed in the media as h*,b* having Psychology Today insults us or a Don Imus, I am sorry but there is absolutely nothing funny about being called a call girl! Find other intelligent jokes with substance!
Sorry, I missed this, over my head admittedly. Non specifics, on all counts. What is the point actually being Made here? I’m not sure who is the target of criticism, the movie Juno (all white all the time), com-roms or Conan? The difference between self deprecating white or black humor? Or is it sarcasm in general? And you think whites invented this just for you?
I tend to be bothered by conjecture and innuendo when someone is trying to say something, but in reality-says nothing.
In history of white humor one has to go back to England where No One is given a pass from ‘taking the piss’ and it can be funny, unless it’s YOU as subject, then it is Brutal! and that’s all amongst whites.
Conan is taking his cues from Steven Colbert who has asked for all kind of things to be named after him, an eagle, sports teams, etc. ( and succeeded) , which makes Conan just a plagarist.
Perhaps watching less Tv and living in the real world would suit this writer better.
Comedy is comedy.
As far as the above commentator, believe me on this-The very fact that a white person would joke with you about anything suggests affection and ease. Perhaps you mis-understood. White people walk on eggshells around black people All the Time. We have learned to be afraid! You can’t joke with black people about Anything, such is the big ‘chip on shoulder’.
While there is a great deal of ignorance in the world, really, white people do not spend their days trying to find ways to put black people down. Most of us try, clumsily perhaps, to build bridges. It’s a very difficult endeavor, but humor is one way.
This author is really bold and wrote the truth! I am going to share a story which speaks volume about the mindset of Wasps. Recently, a White colleague found out (by the way, as much as possible I try to be low key at my work place but these people scrutinize us so much that it makes it hard to make sure that they don’t know our business) that I had a law diploma. She said to me as a joke (but I knew it was an insult) that I should be a call girl. I told her with a smile that she deserved a slap in her face! My colleague was stunned. So, the author is soooo right when he pens that WASP use their so called humor to insult us!!!
