(ThyBlackMan.com) This month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its unemployment data for the month of May. The unemployment rate for the African American community went up from 16.1 percent to 16.2 percent. Black males, who already had the highest unemployment rate of any ethnic/gender category, saw their joblessness rise from an astounding 17 percent last month to 17.5 percent this month.
While white unemployment has declined since May of last year (8.5 percent to 8.0 percent), black unemployment has risen (15.3 percent to 16.2 percent). Black teenagers also saw their unemployment rate rise over the last year (38.4 percent to 40.7 percent). White teens, on the other hand, had a sharp decline in their unemployment rate (25.1 percent to 20.7 percent).
These astonishing numbers take us back to the statement made two years ago by President Barack Obama with regard to black unemployment. When journalist April Ryan did a wonderful job of pushing the black unemployment issue to the president, the baffling talking point of the Obama Administration was that “the rising tide will lift all boats,” implying that engaging in policy for the entire country would magically heal the effects of racial inequality in the job market. The translation was: “Sure black people gave us 18 percent of our votes, but you don’t deserve more than two percent of our time.”
The problem for the Obama Administration is that the “rising tide” logic might make sense on water, but it doesn’t add up in the real world. In fact, it sounds an awful lot like Trickle Down Economics, endorsed by the Reagan Administration nearly 30 years go. Economic trickles don’t work between the rich and the poor and they certainly don’t work on matters of race. This truth has been established repeatedly with the worsening unemployment numbers we keep seeing every single month.
One has to ask this question: Just how high does the black unemployment rate have to be before the Obama Administration and Congress reconsider their policies against engaging in targeted action on behalf of black and brown communities? If the unemployment rate were 20 percent, would that convince them that there is a problem? What about 25 percent? Perhaps there is some hidden law against advocating for people of color?
What makes me saddest is that one only speculates that there is almost no unemployment rate for black men or women that would make any group of elected officials in Washington feel compelled to realize that there might be a problem. In contrast, when whites were screaming about nine percent unemployment, they were given the attention of a newborn baby. That, my friends, is White Supremacy 101.
Given that African Americans are taxpayers too, one has to admit that perhaps our tax dollars are not getting back to us. Wall Street gets massive bailouts and other constituencies have their issues addressed by Washington politicians. But the glaring silence by elected officials on any matter having to do with race is both symptomatic of political cowardice and also a reflection of a society that is so blind with racism that it feels compelled to deliberately penalize any politician who chooses to address racial inequity.
In light of the fact that the US government decided to boycott the United Nations World Conference on Racism, one must truly ask if the United States is in denial. Perhaps we are convinced that cosmetic changes, like electing a bi-racial president or honoring Black Music Appreciation Month can override the deep social cleansing necessary to deal with a 400-year old problem.
What’s most interesting about Washington politicians is that solving the problem is never as great of a concern as who gets blamed for the problem. Well, rather than simply blaming President Obama, we can do what makes sense: Blame everyone who is not doing all they can to achieve a solution. This might mean dealing with the Congressional Black Caucus, the Obama Administration, The Justice Department, Congress, the Senate, black community leadership and ourselves to determine whether or not we are demanding that our tax dollars be put to work by helping black men and women find gainful employment.
There must come a time when everyone is held accountable, and all political loyalties are put on the table for negotiation. If someone is not doing their job in advocating for the African American community, then black folks have no reason to support that official. The accountability certainly starts at the top, but it must spread to any and all of us who have the ability to access federal and community resources. Such devastation cannot be allowed to continue and being silent is no longer an option.

17.5% black men unemployed reported and you know it’s more than that! It’s injustice to a race of people. 16.2% reported as a whole and you know it’s more than that. Black genocide because they keep quiet about it no matter whose in office these past ten years. How can take care your health without money? Genocide.
Black and black African-America should be critical of the office of President of the United States. We should be willing to admit that they voted overwhelmingly for Obama due to his skin color and had that affirmed because of his beautiful black African-American wife, mother in law and children. But let’s get to some of your points. You say that Republicans don’t care for Black America. Well maybe so but should they? Black America gets the best politics for what it pays for. That sure applies at a local and state level. You will find it difficult to name any black first prior to 1964 that was a Democrat Party inspiration.
The problems that came about in opposition to, say the Civil Rights Acts in the 1800’s for Blacks, were that Democratic factions did not enforce the laws. In 1886 94% of GOP Congressmen and 96% of Senators voted for the 14th Amendment guaranteeing all Americans equal protection of the law. Every congressional Democrat voted “No”. In 1960 Eisenhower signed the 1960 Civil Rights Act after a 5 day filibuster by Democrats. I could go on and on here.
Social Security is one of three unfunded debts that the U.S has accumulated. Social Security, Prescriptions (brought to you with support by Newt Grinrich), and Medicare has ran up a debt of $113.7 trillion. Don’t worry about that ever getting settled. Congress wanting to privatize SS I doubt it. Nor does a company want to tackle such a cash cow.
Blacks were not ready to properly use the office of U.S President, as we see other ethnic groups doing. Groups with the purpose of extracting wealth from the commerce opportunity of the U.S will have an agenda for the President and his agencies that will assure then success of their goals. Not wait and see what the President has in store for them as we continue to see demonstrated in black behavior. Far too much of Blacks focus is around social issues. Too much is put on racism, which is not the problem. Too much is focused on white supremacy as a biological and social ideal where as it is an economic reality and is the problem. A problem Blacks are not addressing by competing against white supremacy in an all out effective manner.
Politically Blacks vote lock stepped for democrats then get mad when they have nothing tangible to show for those actions after all the years. Your politicians are to be given marching orders. Sent off to accomplish what is needed by the people who choose them. In the Black Political game someone else choose who represents the black voice. Remember the democrats only needed the black vote in 6 states in 2008. Black vote will be irrelevant in 2012. Lack of comparable voting strength due in part to in the first 30 years after the Roe court decision, black women murdered over 18 million black babies in the womb. Now how is that helping the political game? How is that helping the family building game?
Black statistics of what make one a successful American doesn’t even look like that of an American. They are first in all the very worse and last in what develops class.
Whites are never going to provide the funds for Black Children to compete against their children. Frankly I admire them for taking such a position. Black children are merely a commodity within the public schools where now blacks themselves are benefiting from the game. That’s not whites fault today. Yes there are root causes tied to them but the continued dismal activities that go on with black education and skill attainment lies greatly on the shoulders of Black America.
The issue of Obama being “black enough” is not of concern. It is he “white enough” in this world today. Whatever he may be, too much of Black America is looking at him with reverse expectations.
Dr. Boyce, thank you for using the right language to get this point accross. At less you are not afarid to open your mouth to say “Ouch”.
I agree G Franklin to a certain degree. We must fight for equality once again. There are too many Blacks who feel that Dr. King’s dream has been fulfilled, when in truth that is not the case. We have become so twisted with one black man having a job (President Obama), that we have ignored the backlash. I am a talented, educated brother who has not worked in two years. I apply for jobs daily. We need to unite and fight!!!!
We have never been able to rely on America to look out for our best intrests even now with a capable black man as the head of state, we are marginalized but that does not mean we are defeated. We must use what we have to get what we want and maybe just maybe we need to adjust our desires to want what we need. The American dream for our people cannot be the same as the dream for their people we cannot afford conspicuos consumption, and gratuitous waste, actually neither can they.
Our focus needs to be on survival not assimilation. if we can keep our young men and women out of jail and off drugs and in school we can call ourselves successful. But there is no honor or dignity in making it “rain” or “rolling on twenty-fours” especially if we aren’t feeding our offspring and teaching them the importance of knowing how to maneuver in a world of political enemies who conspire to deny us economic parity and deprive us of our vote; our “other” real strength, any way they can .
We have mistaken our freedom for ease, our work load doubled upon Emancipation and redoubled with the voting rights act of the ’60s and in those ensueing years until this date 2011 we are under assault by those who still view us as chattle or unworthy usurpers, leeches not full citizens making contributions towards the betterment of society.
We won’t move forward until we move inside, become a culture within a culture determined to survive; for as we desegregate we disentigrate we should be first intent to rise in our own eyes then we will be seen in theirs as a people worthy to be seen as a People and not kowtowing sycophants aching to emulate their every move.
Look at the world today, can you truly say that those in charge know what they are doing? Then why invest your hope in them or look to them for anything of substance? As a very wise woman once said “it ain’t no fun when you’re the only one in love” I married her for having that much sense. No wonder we can’t even get engaged in this culture, much less married with how we behave. If we love right we’ll do right, when we love white we do wrong. Please, we don’t need to hate them to love us but wisdom teaches that charity begins at home and spreads abroad.
So support the first President in whom we have a genuine stake in his; which is our, success. And let us begin to groom his successors male and female not to assimilate but to further demonstrate that we are great! With or without outside approval. Nothing honest is too huge or too meager for our hands to do. It is not what we do that gives us esteem but how we do what we do that gives us the by GOD glory we need to survive and prosper.
Thank you Thy Black Man for providing this forum for the expression of matters of our concern to be read by people who are affected by and are able to grow from these points of view.
Thanks to G. Franklin and to Humble Guy – God has helped African Americans – it is time for African Americans to help themselves. You have the power – use it.
AFRICAN AMERICANS HAVE SHED THEIR BLOOD IN EVERY SINGLE WAR FOR FREEDOM THE UNITED STATES HAS EVER FOUGHT IN SINCE IT’S CONCEPTION. IS THIS HOW WE REPAY THEIR PATRIOTISM?
God Please Help African Americans, God place compassion in the hearts of the many who see African Americans as insignificant contributors to our work force. God please help feed the families of the 16.2% adults & 40.7% teenage African Americans. Whom certainly deserve at the very least, an impartial opportunity to prove their worth in our country’s work place.
I would like to offer a different viewpoint on this issue. Today is the day that Blacks should rise above and help themselves. I am a professional creative in photography. I have noticed the lack of opportunity within our own African American community. If you research the advertising and editorial work on most of our products, magazines (Essence, Ebony), etc., you will see that at least 90% of the photographic assignments are outsourced to mostly non-African American photographers. We are the minority within the minority.
Are you aware that most of the CD covers and advertising for singers and musicians in R&B, Jazz, Rap, and Hip-Hop are photographed by Caucasians? How can we continually fight this battle if African American advertising agencies, magazines and record companies are not making it a priority to employ and utilize African American talent such as photographers. So I say to Thy Black man – help thy Black Man and hire them for the job as they are just as qualified to do. If you need validation, check out the photographers on the latest issues of these magazines, check out Beyonce’s photographer on all of her releases, check out Dark ‘n Lovely, and the list goes on. Call these companies and find out why they are not hiring Black talent.
