(ThyBlackMan.com) There is much we don’t know about God. In the Bible we read of what God said about Himself through the prophet Isaiah, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord, As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9.) Yet, in spite of all we don’t know, here are 10 things your kids need to hear about our Creator:
1) God values each person! The Bible says that God created people in His own image. God gave the gifts of personhood to humankind that he did not give to the rest of His creation. This sets people apart from the rest of creation! Each person is a special work of art: God’s art! The Bible states, “For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works…” (Eph. 2:10). Your kids need to know God has created them to be a special, unique and wonderful person!
2) God’s love is unconditional! God wrote the book on love. He actually defines what real love is! God loves each person for who they are – not for what they do or don’t do! We read in 1 John 14:10, “This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” This does not mean that God ignores people’s sins. He deals with sin. Yet, your kids need to understand that no one ever has to earn His love.
3) God’s love is sacrificial! It cost something for God to deal with sin – it cost Him the life of His Son, Jesus. “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6-8). If your kids ever doubt God’s love for them, point them to the cross!
4) God cares when people hurt! “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him,” (Nahum 1:7). Kids need to hear that God is not indifferent to life’s painful circumstances and they can go to God with their cares (see 1 Peter 5:7).
5) God disciplines His children! Sometimes God allows people to suffer the consequences of their actions or to experience suffering as His way of disciplining us. Through discipline we learn obedience and trust. Kids need to learn that God’s discipline is not a sign of His opposition, but rather of His great love! (See Hebrews 12:5-11).
6) God never wastes pain! When people encounter and survive difficult life experiences, God will provide opportunities for those experiences to be used to comfort others who face similar difficulties. (See 2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Kids need to encouraged with the knowledge that if they are willing, God will use their difficult experiences to help others.
7) God is always patient! People fall short of God’s standards. No one can live a life of perfection. God understands. He doesn’t rush to judgment. (See 2 Peter 3:9). At times, people get frustrated with their lack of spiritual progress and feel like giving up. But, God doesn’t give up! In Philippians 1:6 we read, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Kids need to know that God will stick with them all along the way!
8) God is big enough to meet people’s needs! Life can be really hard. Circumstances can knock people down and make it difficult to get up and going again. Even in the toughest of life’s storms, God is big enough to get us through. God doesn’t necessarily promise to calm the storm; but rather to walk alongside us. Jesus said, “Surely I am with you always…” (Matthew 28:20). Kids need to hear of God’s promise to supply their every need when they seek Him first. (See Matthew 6:33.)
9) God is always on call – 24/7! There is never a time when God is not aware of what is happening in His creation or cannot be bothered. “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear.” (Isaiah 59:1.) Though people can let one another down, God never will. Kids need to learn that God is always available. “God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you…’” (Hebrews 13:5).
10) God always does the right thing! “God is righteous in everything He does,” records the Old Testament prophet, Daniel (Daniel 9:14). The Bible is full of verses like this that proclaim God’s righteousness and his holiness. People often have a hard time understanding why God allows evil to exist, or painful circumstances to occur in our own lives. At times, I even throw up my hands and say “I don’t get it, Lord!” But, God is big enough to handle what I don’t know or what I can’t figure out. In the end, I firmly believe, whatever God does is right! Kids need to know that even though they won’t always be able to figure out the many mysteries of this life, God can be trusted. (See Proverbs 3:5-6.)
