(ThyBlackMan.com) For generations all genres of fiction warned of apocalyptic destruction and despair. What if these works were really cautioning against a disastrous change in consciousness instead of physical events like war or disaster?
In the wake of the latest healthcare debate opponents feel doom has arrived. Government once owned the bodies of African captives and their American-born progeny. This poisonous precedent has slowly broadened its reach through various laws: attempted suicide is a crime in many jurisdictions despite the body in question belonging to the would-be “victim“, along with physician assistance to accomplish the same; performance enhancing drugs like steroids are out of bounds, even for non-competitive purposes; fines are imposed for daring to damage government property ( yourself? ) by not wearing seatbelts or helmets; public and private sector drug tests are used to get and lose jobs; DUI testing assists police at traffic stops; DNA is also collected by law enforcement and the military. The invasion of the American body continues without apparent objection.
My question is where does it end? If government can fine you for choosing not to have health insurance, do you still own “your” body? I support affrodable healthcare, especially for the working poor, i.e most citizens. The devil lurks in this new law and the working poor may catch hell from insurance companies; the feds; doctors, take your pick.
Captive heritage informs my soul deep distrust of government. Like slave masters of old, city halls; county commissions; state legislatures; governors mansions; Congress and the White House are filled with folks who feel they own everybody else. As government occupies more of our autonomy, anyone can get the N-Word treatment once exckusively reserved for Black folks. Anybody wondering what it felt like to be a Black victim of discrimination can thank government for increasingly integrating this ungodly experience after every national election.
Black folks should always be a reliable beachhead against new invasions of the American body. Shame on us for being seduced into thinking “Massuh” has turned a new leaf and isn’t tightening a stranglehold on our being. We who’ve experienced this loss so intimately can’t sit quietly and allow others to suffer the upgraded version of losing bodily ownership. Doing so means all the suffering and liberation rhetoric were in vain.
We have a special duty to save the American body from the American government. The more things change, sadly, the more they stay the same.
America needs new Frederick Douglasses and Sojourner Truths to lead a new Abolition movement for a new day… before it’s too late!
