(ThyBlackMan.com) Can we finally talk about it now? Has enough time passed so we can in earnest address the more substantive issues? I would suggest that we’ve had more than enough time to forward Whitney Houston’s obituary to every friend we had, post every imaginable link to our “favorite” moments of her funeral. We surely had heard every conceivable argument as to why or why we shouldn’t blame Bobby presently or previous to this moment regarding Whitney Houston’s demise.
Usually when we toss around the phrase “too soon,” it is in relation to questionable jokes and semi-classless humor regarding the recently departed. Mo’Kelly had no idea it also applied to the more serious issues.
Can we finally address the issue of substance abuse, or is it still “too soon?”
Keep in mind, this is not just a “Whitney Houston death” issue, it was a Michael Jackson issue. We can run the list. David Ruffin. Rick James, Teena Marie. And yes, it was a Vesta Williams issue too. Despite what some have mentioned in the press that Williams died because of an “enlarged heart,” there was no autopsy or toxicology report released to support the claim.
That was not by accident.
There was no acknowledgment of the obvious, that years and years of cocaine abuse (admitted by Williams) inevitably leads to an “enlarged heart.” There was no explanation of the very detailed hotel setting, complete with empty pill bottles found at the scene of her death either.
Are we ready to start telling the truth now?
And don’t get Mo’Kelly started on Pastor Zachery Tims and the mother who is blocking the release of his toxicology report after her “former” addict son was found dead in a New York hotel room with a “powdery substance” on his person.
We enable the drug habits (both illicit and prescription) and when he/she/they die we are “shocked” and seek to blame the enablers while not recognizing them when we pass the mirror. We then want to make sure not to speak ill of the recently departed, whitewashing the truth of both their life and death. If that weren’t enough, we also try to browbeat and verbally annihilate those who aren’t down with the revisionist history program.
Shortly after Whitney Houston passed, a few media outlets approached Mo’Kelly to give remembrances and speak on her passing. I turned down each request because I had no desire to lie. That, and it was evidently “too soon” for some people to hear the truth.
Here’s what I mean…
I interacted with/met Whitney Houston on only two occasions; the first was at 8:30 in the morning exactly 16 years ago to the day in 1996. While working for the Grammys (NARAS), Whitney and Cece Winans were rehearsing on stage for an upcoming Waiting to Exhale medley.
Upon walking in Madison Square Garden, everyone in the house was instructed not to photograph or engage Whitney. A visibly hungover, crashing, sunglass-wearing, disheveled Whitney Houston stumbled through the rehearsal, complaining about the stage lights affecting her “headache.”
There was no mistaking her condition…note the year of 1996.
The other time in which I spent time with Whitney Houston (and Bobby) was in 2000. It was the album release party for “Mr. Dalvin,” Dalvin Degrate…better known as the least known and least talented member of Jodeci. (Yes, he had his own album once upon a time.)
Anyone at the Playboy Mansion that night could tell you of both Whitney Houston and Bobby stumbling around the party with odd, drug-induced behavior, often singing gospel songs back and forth…not quite remembering all the lyrics or recognizing the oddity of belting out gospel in the middle of the Playboy Mansion (of all places) to nobody in particular.
Those are my only two firsthand memories of Whitney Houston…drunk, hungover, high or some sordid combination of all three. The outlets wishing to interview Mo’Kelly clearly weren’t looking for those stories.
I only spoke with her twice in life and both times she was high. I could lie and say she wasn’t but lying is what indirectly led to her death. It’s time to start telling the truth.
Outsiders knew Whitney Houston was an addict ever since the infamous Diane Sawyer interview; two years after my final encounter with her. Music insiders knew she had been hooked for many, many years. As in, many years before Bobby Brown was in the picture.
There is a verifiable history of abuse dating back to the mid 90s that I personally am aware. It likely was even longer. But it is safe to say we had at least 16 years to save her, and we failed. We spent more time hoping she’d divorce Bobby Brown, make a comeback or some well-timed combination of both.
And before you go there, anybody familiar with The Mo’Kelly Report knows that I had been tireless over the years in my attempts to get traction on issue of Whitney Houston’s addiction, to no avail. And it goes without saying, I’ve broached the subject a number of times with singer El DeBarge and Michael Jackson. This is nothing new.
Hopefully the response from our community will be (something new).
How many more of our favorite artists must die untimely deaths before our community has an honest and open discussion regarding addiction and its connection to mental health and depression?
The only earnest discussion regarding artists and addiction that I’ve seen on a national level was between Bill Maher and Dr. Drew Pinsky. Maybe the discussion is being had in our community, but it doesn’t exist on both a national and substantive level.
So instead of finding fault with Bobby Brown for “Being Bobby Brown” or again forwarding copies of Whitney’s obituary to everyone on your Facebook friend list, ask yourself…challenge yourself as to what you could have done differently in the past 10 years that might have saved Whitney Houston. What you might be able to do moving forward to save another one of our treasured artists?
If the only discussion we’re willing to have is how drugs (illicit and prescription) or Bobby Brown ruined her career, then we’ve missed the point; and Whitney Houston’s death…and Rick James’…and Teena Marie’s…and Michael Jackson’s…and David Ruffin’s…and Dorothy Dandridge’s…and Billie Holiday’s…and Vesta Williams’…and Phyllis Hyman’s…and Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s…and Gerald Levert’s…and Amy Winehouse et al. were all meaningless. If you or a loved one are suffering from chronic drug addiction, consider an inpatient treatment center as a treatment option.

There are plenty of reasons why one might become addicted to something. It can be something as simple as hanging out with the wrong crowd. I would say that ultimately it is the person addicted who has to own up to the addiction. Only they can stop the addiction. Any of us that know people who are addicted to something can help out a lot but that person ultimately has to do the work in order to get their life back.
Why is it that we commend Mary J’s husband for being the factor in getting her to stop using, but not blame Bobby for being the factor in NOT caring enought to get his wife to stop using. He is the MAN, the husband, he’s to protect wife and child. He doesn’t get a pass and I would like to think that he wouldn’t want one! @Michelle says well you can’t blame him because he’s been out of her life for 5 years. Too late Michelle, she was already addicted to it. As if she could have said, “well my divorce is final! From this day on I’m drug free! He’s gone, I won’t be needing this!” There would be no addicts (matter of fact that word wouldn’t exist) or alcoholics if it were that easy for them. After 14 plus years the body needs it.
I am bewildered as to how someone goes from using drugs here and there before they are with their husband to a stone cold junkie during the coarse of the marriage… and the husband gets a pass!!! This can’t be!! What man out of all the men posting on this site, sits watches his WIFE, not jumpoff or mistress… his WIFE, snorting, sniffing, smoking etc. even while she’s pregnant and he gets a pat on the head to say… don’t you listen to those people this had nothing to do with you baby. Ummmmm…. MAYBE he could have stopped it dead in its tracks!!! LA Reids ex wife Pebbles (she’s a pastor now) gave an interview (I wanna say Vibe or XXL) back during the B.Brown reality show. She had Whitney come to her mansion. She stated that they prayed and she prayed over Whitney and they fasted and prayed and read and sang. She said she felt like she made a connection and was continuing to pray for a breakthrough… a few days later… Guess who came and got his wife!!! For no apparent reason, but to put a halt to this rehabilitation!! Pebbles said that if you go back and look into every rehab stint that Whitney attempted, Bobby was always a factor in getting her to come home. Ya’ll can give him a pass all day. He knows and he’s suffering right now! It’s called conviction!! Cause he didn’t just do nothing! He did do something… the wrong thing! He intervened when she at least attempted to try and help herself. She’s on an island in rehab and he’s on the island in a hotel with one of the island girls. Some of you remember the infamous call Wendy Williams made to the hotel room and he answered and told her off and hung up! Wendy was like how could you be cheating while Whitneys over in rehab trying to get clean. He was like how did you get this number? Wendy even said then… “yeah Bobby’s there to make sure that rehab don’t go down?” Yep, just like Pebbles said he would! SMH The devil in disguise! I thought him spitting in Whitneys face was low. I’m sure the daughter can look back and tell you some other stories similar to the one Pebbles had. I’m sure he wouldn’t want her to write a tell all book! Yes, Whitney did drugs before her husband… it was her husband who aided her in becoming an addict. He don’t get a pass in my book. A husband is supposed to protect his loved ones! That’s his job!!
Mr. Kelly,
If I recall correctly, shortly after her death you stated in the comments on your website that Vesta had gone specifically to the hotel in which she died to commit suicide. It later came out through several other sources that she had been staying there for some time due to unfortunate circumstances. If you’re not bothered by the fact that engaging in speculation without unshakable evidence to back it up is irresponsible at least consider how hurtful such actions are to the families left behind. I can’t imagine you would take it kindly if someone was spreading unsubstantiated stories about your departed loved ones.
You should really educated yourself and then check the facts. Teena Marie’s death had nothing whatsoever to do with drug abuse. She died as a result of a epileptic seizure. In fact she was on medication for the condition and cut back on the dosage while waiting to see a doctor of alternative medicine because the medication was making her suicidal. The fact that she was on vicodin, for a short time I might add, years ago(2004-2005)had nothing to do with her death. Get your facts straight.
I have a copy of Vesta’s autopsy report. Its punlic information amd my cousin died of heart disese and hypertension. Now go sit down and stop judging you stipid ignorant bastard.
Momo…you are incorrect. She was on drugs prior to meeting Bobby Brown. Whitney was very street when she came to Arista and Clive Davis has said many times how he had to mold her into a diva, she wasn’t always one and definitely not always classy.
She and Bobby were more alike than different.
Whitney Houston is responsible for her own demise and her own drug usage over the years, you cannot blame Bobby Brown who have now been out of her life for nearly 5 years.
momo thats just not true, there are various reports, public for all to see from friends of hers way back in the day, stating she was a substance abuser. Even the documentary which aired the other night about her death showed an interview in which she herself stated she’d used drugs back in her early years and before. She called herself a “functioning junkie” and said she was taking cocaine back in the ghetto days – she never was from the ghetto, but the meaning was there – back before she was famous! Way back before she encountered bobby brown!
Whitney was a classy drug-free lady prior to getting involved with BobbyBrown. She then became a druggie and no longer that classy lady. I agree with her family for blaming Bobby and they would know what really occurred.
Mo, you came right to the point. One of the things I’ve found out about my people is that we have an extreme difficulty accepting the truth about our icons, warts and all. We can argue all day as to the reasons why, but the truth of the matter is that Whitney was a confirmed abuser of drugs and the SOLE instrument of her death. Not Bobby, not this or that, Whitney. It takes courage NOT to pick up a bottle, snort a line, or smoke crack to cover our inability to handle our issues. The substance abuse by some of our most talented people point to an inability to constructively deal with our emotional, spiritual, and mental health in a constructive manner. So maybe it’s time to understand that our icons are people with feet of clay, and we should see them as such.
