(ThyBlackMan.com) I understand we always feel the need to compare current artist with the previous. There are many that would say, yes, Beyoncé is a lot like Janet Jackson. Anyone looking at these two can see a few comparisons. Janet Jackson is an amazing performer with longevity in the business. Every album gave us something different, and she never neglected to address social issues through her music.
Everything about albums like “Rhythm Nation” set a standard for what we see today. Granted Beyoncé is also a stellar performer in every right. Beyonce has been a big proponent for Girl Power, but in this regard, she is following in the footsteps of say a Janet Jackson. Furthermore, we are just beginning to see the addressing of social issues through the music that affect Beyoncé.
Janet Jackson is stand alone, and so is Beyonce, this is the reason I would say we should lay off the comparison. Just we could try to compare the two icons all day, however I think Janet Jackson had a bit more variety in her content (not by much), than Beyonce. Janet Jackson didn’t make albums that seemed to be centered around her husband as of course she wasn’t married. Yes, both have epic concert performances, and choreographer. Janet Jackson and Beyoncé are considered sexy, but I think Janet left more to our imagination on the stage…while Beyoncé may be more sexually conservative on the actual album.
The comparison of icons is tempting. Janet Jackson came first and yes she laid a path that Beyonce, and others, could follow. However, these entertainers are also very different, and the differences set them apart. Some will always argue that maybe Beyoncé is the better singer, but Janet the better performer…who knows.
Then, of course die hard Janet Jackson fans will say Beyonce can never compare to the legend. Lastly, we know the Beyhive eat and sleep Beyoncé and Janet Jackson is the past. I’d prefer they are both iconic entertainers and they should stand in their own light.

Ok, where do I begin… you can’t compare the student to the teacher. Though I understand where the write is going with this article, it dumbs down Janet’s accomplishments as an artist in order to in fact compare the 2. Though Beyoncé is a very popular performer and a good performer, she lacks the creative ability to actually set standards. She’s so “inspired” by others, she lacks her own identity i.e. Tina, Michael, Janet, and some lesser known artists like Bob Fosse (her “Single Ladies” and “Get Me Bodied” videos and choreography were completely “inspired” by his work). Janet’s albums and tours have set records that haven’t been broken in 25 years. She’s damn near outsold Beyoncé with janet. and Rhythm Nation alone than Bey’s entire discography not including Destiny’s Child! Let me Not get started on how many writers and producers are credited on a single Beyoncé song (5+) vs a Janet song (Janet, Jimmy, and Terry) that means Janet is a bonafide, accomplished, ASCAP-receiving, hitmaking, singer/songwriter/producer… Janet sets the trend she doesn’t follow. And that’s why you can’t compare the 2!
I think Janet is a much more interesting artist and performer.
Beyonce can have a bigger voice, have more skills as a vocalist. But that’s it.
Janet is more artistic, in my opinion. Her albums between 1986 and 2001, along with her most recent “Unbreakable” are really outstanding albums.
Beyoncé has talent and has great ideas, but a lot of her ideas are recicled from other artists. She seems more like a mash-up of various female entertainers (Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson…).
Janet Jackson, though high influenced by her brother Michael, is a litle bit more original in my opinion.
I was going to say as well, that Janet was married for a while and we don’t know if some of the songs were geared towards her then husband. Very different artists. No need to compare.
Janet Jackson was actually married for 10 years to Rene Elizondo, and a year to James DeBarge the public just didn’t know about it. Her 2015 album Unbreakable was #1 as well as the single No Sleeep featuring J Cole so I wouldn’t exactly call her yesterdays new either.
Janet Jackson the legend actually that Beyoncé copies so she’s not or ever be above Janet ok delusional fan keep opinions somewhere away from truth
Well said I love the article
